Fred Peyton , the champion pool player of
Nebraska , was hit on the head with a billy
or some other hard Instrument about 7
o'clock last evening and Is now lying In a
very precarious condition nt the city hospital.
Ills skull Is fractured , but Dr. Slabaugh and
Dr. Thomas Kelly are both of the opinion
that he will recover.
It Is supposed that the blow was struck
by Tom Galloway , a young1 man who runs
an elevator at Cudahy's , A few evenings
ago Peyton and Galloway had a quarrel over
a ulrl. It Is claimed that nt the time Gal
loway drew n revolver on Peyton. The latter
offered to light him with bare knuckles , but
refused to go up against n revolovr. When
Galloway was going' to his room ovtr Shenk's
restaurant on lower N street , Peyton fol
lowed him tip stairs In the hallway the
men began fighting and there were no wit
nesses to tell Just how the assault was com
mitted. The first that outsiders knew ot the
scrap was when Peyton fell down stairs. Ho
was knocked sensciess by the blow and fall
nnd only rallied nt short Intervals during the
night. Peyton works In the barber shop
close to where the racket occurred.
Ucfore the bystanders could Inquire Into
the trouble Jim Galloway , n brother to Tom ,
and Morris Illnns began fighting. The police
placed the three men under arrest nnd Pey
ton was removed to the hospital. No charges
were lodged against Galloway and none will
be until Peyton's condition Is more fully
recognized.
