The ccntlnuatlon of the drouth for scv- oral days after serious damage had already been reported has caused even the moat BniiKUlno huslness moil to about glvo up all hope of tlicro being anything Ilka a corn crop In this Bcctlon of the country. At tlio tlrno of the last failure of the crops the ilamago wan not so general and the job bers wcro enabled to make up for their losses of business In Nebraska , | n some ex tent , by extending their trade In Iowa. This Benson there w.ll be no chance for anything of that kind , as the reports would see in to Indicate that Iowa In Buffering fully us much from the drouth ns this state. Tlio serious ness of the situation haa naturally set busi ness men to thinking. At first some were considerably discouraged that a crop failure should follow Immediately after such a hard year , and wcro Inclined to argue that If a failure of the crops caused such a depres sion In business In the season of 1890-91 the present inlluro would have still more dis astrous results coming when the business of the country was already greatly de pressed. Some , however , arc commencing to take a different view of the subject. They point out that In 1890 every cno was ant clpatlng a largo and prosperous business , and the merchants had all laid In Urge stocks of Roods and had gene recklessly Into debt , there being no hesitancy about assuming largo obligations when thera was every pros pect of money being plenty and trade good. The shelves of every store In the country were piled with goods that had been bought In advance of the demand and on credit. This -was In brief the situation when the business men of the state were brought face to face with a crop failure. The result was that the demand for mer chandise of all kinds fell on enormously , and the demand which'was expected to clear the largo stocks was not forthcoming. In the meantime bills commenced to fall duo and there was no money to meet obligations the goods were still on the shelves. A great many merchants were forced out of business and It was a season of general disaster to the business Interests of the state. The situation at the present time is en tirely different. For the past year or more business has been In such shape that mer chants of all classes have been foellng their way cautiously , and no one has been dis posed to take any risks of any character whatever. The jobbers have been very con servative In buying and have only laid In stocks as they were .sure that there would be a demand for the goods , and country re tail merchants have for months pursued the hand to mouth policy of buying. They have ordered goods only as their trade demanded and have allowed stocks to run down to the lowest point possible. There Is no surplus merchandise in any portion of the country. Owing to the uncertainty of the times col lections have been kept up pretty close and Indebtedness generally reduced , while there has been a decided disinclination to create new obligations. The expenses Incident to business operations have been cut down to the lowest point. Under thcso conditions many are of the opinion that the business Intcicsts of the country arc In better shape to put up with a loss of the corn crop than they were in 1890. They claim that It will bo a hard year , in the sense that there will be little oppor tunity for making profits , but they do not look for such disastrous results. With ex penses reduced to the minimum nnd stocks ion the same basis , merchants can get along even If they do not have much business. HANK CUJAHINGS. While there have been no now features of importance In the jobbing district of the city , there has been a change In the matter of bank clearings that may be worthy of notice. After being on the wrong side for many months , Omaha at last Is able to show an Increase In the clearings , as compared with the previous year , this Increase for the past week amounting to 24 per cent. While this gain Is not so large as that shown by some other cities. It Is still Utter than the average for the whole country , which shows a decrease of 3.4 per cent. Had It not been for the strike at South Omaha the showing would , without doubt , have been still better. As It la , Omaha does not compare quite so favorably with other cities as a week ago. The following arc the clearings for the past week at a favv of the cities in this part of the country : Minneapolis $5,021,537 Omaha 4BiS,01fi Ht. Paul 2.9u6,331 Denver 2iU H Dultlth 2,421,701 8t. Joseph 1,514,114 THE MANUFACTURERS. While the business of the manufacturers Is affected by the same conditions and in about the same degree as the jobbing trade the manufacturers of the state arc very act ive and arc doing everything possible to Keep thcni&clvcH before the people. Quito a number of the manufacturers are remarking that It was during tha dull times following the loss of the corn crop In 1S90 that the attention of the people was culled to the necessity for Increasing the manufacturing Interests of the state , which gave rlso to the homo patronage campaign that did so much to encourage the factory people of the state * . It Is said that when times are good people do not BO fully realize the necessity of having diversified Interests , but when the corn crop falls then every one Is avvaro of the Import ance of Introducing manufacturing Industries which will give employment to working pco- plo , thus creating a population that will help sustain business when other things fall. During tha past week the manufacturers Imvo been airanging for their banquet at lleatrtce , which will take place on the evenIng - Ing of August 1C. The banquet Is given by the Manufacturers and Consumers' asso ! ciation to the business men tit Nebraska. Arrangements have boon mailo for 300 guests. All members of the association are expected to bo present , In addition to the business men of Hentrlee. An Interesting program has been prepared , consisting of "An Address of Welcome" by Mayor Schultz of llcatrlce , ro- spoiist ) by the secictary of the association , "Nebraska's Haw Material Products , " by Hon. John M. Thuiston ; "Hoatrlco as Manufac turing City , " by Colonel W H IMgar of HeMrlce ; "Tho Tress , " by J * L. II. Austin of Lincoln ; "The Past and Kuturo of Ne braska. " by lion. II. S. lllbb of Ilealrlce , after which there will be general spcnKIng by the guests. Another Important enterprise which the manufacturers have In h.ind Is the annual exposition of the association at the state fair. It The fair takes place on September 7 to 14 and the management has placed one of the best buildings nt the disposal of the manufacturers - turors , who will endeavor to make the best to showing of Nebraska Industries possible. of Already fifty manufacturing firms have slg- nlfled Iholr Intention of making exhibits. A number of these exhibits will bo of ma chinery In operation , showing the actual woik of manufacturing goods. L1VU STOCK MARKET. Owing to the sirkit at the packing houses at South Omaha there has not been a very active live stock market during the past W ten days , ami business has been hampered to a great extent. The cattle market has C not amounted to much. Tha receipts have been fair on most days , but the demand. IIIK been wanting. This Is especially trua ot the trade In dressed beef cuttle. The shippers have not been operating to any extent , and the local packers have net been In condition to handle many cattle. The country demand for stackers and feeders 1ms been very light , owing , apparently , to the continued drouth In the country , which U not only destroying the corn crop , but W hi * maJa the pasturage EO shcrt that there la very little feed for cattle In many sec r tions of the state. A * to the prlcci on cattle , there haa been very little change J from day to day during the period und r ro * v low. The receipts of hogs have been liberal , but a considerable proportion ot the arrivals ! maJa up ot the trash that la being ship. p U out of some atcttona ot the attte , and for which there Is very little demand at any price. Theao common light and under weight hogs have been nlnrst unsalable on Homo days of the week , and a good many have been held over from dry to day with out A buyer being found. The loctl pickers hnvo not d/no much during the vvepk , being entirely absent from the market on some days and buying only a few hogs on other days. This has left the trade entirely In the hands ot the ftluppers. A1' HU.V SIXS IT , .Snmll ttiiy of'I.lilil 1'tnjn Through the t/'ImiiM of Drontli nnd I.ntxir DHtiirlmnrr. II. "U Is a gloomy outlook , anil business men me adjusting- their affairs for the worst senson over experienced In thin coun try. Fortunately for Omaha , her location with reference to western trade- will enable her Jobbers to do fiilrly v.ell. The small onlt-rn wilt be numcioUH , and their nggre- Kiiti : will keep up the volume very near. If not quite , to that of past years. The lack of employment iiml i-nterprlHu In the city Is sctlously utfectln- ; retail ttade , and the outlook for the- winter Is discouraging In deed. Something .sboitld be done by the city nnd county authorities and business men generally to provlilu employment for our laboring people. We should not wait until winter IH upon us nnd then extmd cold tliurlty to the unfortunate. The wealthy citizens ami business men would do well to get together nt once anil out ot their combined vvtadom formulate a practi cable scheme for tiding over a hard winter without extending absolute vitality to men willing and anxious to earn their dally bread. "The strike at South Omnha has been a very serious blow to that great packing center. Just nt the time when It seemed iilmoU certain that South Omaha would step forward to second place as n packing center this disturbance among laboring people ple occurred. Cuttle and IIOKS , which farm ers me shipping out as rapidly as possible on account of Hhort feed , are necessarily sent to other markets , nnd both our pack ers and stock dealers mo suffering In con sequence. Livery good citizen of Omaha regrets the conditions which have placed local labor and local capital at odds with each other. Of all the times In the experi ence of this clCy nnd country , when capital and Its handmaid should be on conllnl terms , this la tbe time , for capital and labor were never more Interdependent than now. "Happily the danger of further violence seems to have piiSM'd , and now It IH hoped the sober second thought of packers nnd woiklngmen will bring the two together anil the misguided men who have quit their Jobs will be permitted to return anil that both employers and emplojes will unite In nn endeavor to reco\er what has been lost by the strike. "In connctlon with this general labor topic It may not be Improper to discuss the boycott In a paragraph To begin with , the boycott Is unninertcan and unchristian It Is a conspiracy which cannot bo suc cessfully defended. It Is a menace to good ouler nnd should be dealt with by law In BUch a way as to extlipate It from our social sjstem. For two or three weeks one of the largest nnd most progressive local houses In this eltv has been uniler a bo.voott. A > ear or so nijo the same house was boycotted on account of the alleged rellqlon of Its managers. Now It Is boy- cotlcil on the supposition that home of Its cheip goods are made In a penitentiary The boycott In neither case affected the \olume of sales or the net piollts , but It Is extremely annoying and illragreenble lo be held up to the ridicule and animadversion of n large pait of the community. Omaha beer makers have also been bojcotted , anil , unfortunately for the local maniifnctuiers , this Inuicil to the benellt of their outside competitors. There Is too much disposition on the pirt of libor organisations or their leadeis to Interfere with the natural course ot business , and unless they reform In this particular organised labor will rapIdly - Idly dtlft Into oiganleil villainy. In the beer makers' ease , for Instance. It Is pro posed , we understand , to boycott the local honse-i because their coopciage Is not union made The local houses me unable to ob tain kegs enough to meet their icqulrcments from union shop's. Because of this situation they have asked the local labor organisa tions to permit them to use nonunion coop erage until that which Is appio\eil by or ganized 1 ibor can bo obtnlml If this mod erate anil reasonable request Is refused it boycott Is Inevitable , anil a boycott would be unreasonable , Impolitic and hurtful to this community. "Thero are two things that the business men In this country have maile up their minds no longer to tolerate. The boycott Is one and the sympathetic stillce Is the other , and until these two things nre abandoned by organized labor organbeil labor will sulTer from want of good will on the part of business men generally. "Collections have never been quite ns nanl as they are at piesent. One of the leading Jobbers of this cltv told me the other tiny that he received forty unpaid drafts Intk In a single mall , and out of a large number sent out the first of the month by far the greater proportion were returned unable to pay. rocnl jobbers are disposed to bo lenient , but they must meet their own bills , nnd Interior merchants should not lose sight of this fact. There Is nlwnvs a disposition to take advantage of disaster as an excuse for neglecting the common courtesies which make business possible In these times both buyer and seller mtixt be considerate , nnd It Is un ( wise foi either to complicate the situation the one forcing settlements which might be postponed nnd tbe other postponing set tlements which might be immediately ef- fecteil. " 'Too much congress , lee much legisla tion , too much city council and too much peanut politics Is what Is killing this coun- tiyf was the remark I overheard fall from a well known railroad man's lips the other day. Perhaps the gentleman did not go far enough , but renlb he touched the hem of the Raiment of a vast deal of truth In his epigram , and the remark Is worthy of leflectlon. " _ c'ottim Muikot. The drouth and the market were both broken today. The one break caused the other. Ths government crop report , which at tha tlmo of Its re ceipt on the curb > cstcrday afternoon was cor.sl c ed a Mry ? bullish cocument , end rca ly was so , was altogether surpassed In Inlluence by predicted rains throughout the corn belt. Wheat lost le of the previous value , corn from lo to lc and oats % c. Provisions held to the end a little ot a considerable ad vance , Wheat was rather quiet , with fluctuations confined within from IVlc to lc range. The general tone was weak. Initial trades were at Gfic for September , but sold up later Vic , eased oft ajc , rallied Vic , declined from IV&c to l'/c , ruled steady and closed with Septem ber at Gu'Jic. The early , strength was attrib uted to the government report , which was construed as bearish , making the condition of spring wheat C7.1 , and the total crop of spring and winter , according to the govern ment returns , will bo about 391.000,000 bu Cobles wcro stronter and added eonu strength to the market. Tne exports for the week from bath coasts , wheat and flour , wore some what larger and had a stimulating tendency. Outside markets were firmer. On the other hand , the general dullness was n factor against any material advance , the local move ment was heavy , there were rains where most needed , and a large Increase In the visible supply l.s expected , all of which com bined to depress the price and worked an upward tendency. The market continued to rule easier later lu the session , Influenced by the further break In corn. In corn there was a good trade , but a rather weak market. The opening was from Vic to % c under the final figures of yoster- dny , with September at E3c , and sold down Vic more , rallied le , eased oft lc , changed some , ruled steady and closed steady at 5Jc for September. It was rains on one side and the government report on the other , with the country both buying and selling , but bought considerably mere than It sold. The Veport was construed as bullish as it did not cover the , damage since August 1 , which is variously estimated. On the other hand , Ion a , Kansas , Illinois and Indiana had rains and more was predicted , which had a bearish Influence. Outside markets , with the exception of New York , were firm early , cables V d up on spot nnd Vid up on futures. Receipts wcro small nt 117 can and the es timate for Monday was also moderate. Oats were active and easier In sympathy with corn anil on selling by longs. The range for the day was le for September. Provisions were active. The market acl- varced early on good buying and after sev eral fluctuations declined on fret ] realizing , closing quiet. The unfavorable crop report caused a Kcitcral Oppression at the oponlnR , which vvas not confined to the railroad list , but vvas com municated to the Industrials , though In a less ' degree. The arbitrage * brokers were sellers of small lots of Union Pacific , North ern Pacific preferred and St. Paul nnd the London cables showed American securities lo be weak In thnt market. Thcru was , how ever , no great pressure to sell nnd on a small covering movement the market became somewhat , what i firm before the end of the first hour. After 11 o'clock the speculation becatno In tensely dull , especially for the usually actIve - } Ivo | , : stocks , excepting Sugar , which , with a 'f1 of the specialties , motiopollred what little tie business as done. Toward the close , the market became settled In tone , some shares recording , advances , and the market closed fairly steady with prices generally U4 to 1 % per cent below the final quotations of yester day , the latter Pullman on sales of 700 shares. Some few stocks recorded advances , Including Chicago Gas and Distilling , each i/4 per cent. Sugar rose i per cent at the opening , then receded per cent , rallied % pre cent , reacting per cent In the final dealings and closing unchanged from yester day. There There were free offerings of Sugar In the loan market at IVi per cent. Atchlson and General IJIectrlo closed nt yesterday's last sales. , The week has been full of Interest to the speculative fraternity , the Atchlson . Incident | ( bolng a rather exciting feature and keeping ' the street on the qul vivo up to the very ; close , when It was brought to an end by the acceptance of Kelnhari's resignation from the directory and as receiver. While Ilclnhait has some supporters , the general opinion Is his reply to Expert hlttlc'fc charges that ! he overstated the Income of the road for , the four years Immediately preceding Juno 30 , 1891 , does not meet the Issue squarely , nnd the representatives of the London and Amsterdam security holders state they do not regard his letter to the rcor anl/atlon committee as an answer to the } ( LUtlo report. It has been decided to . , take no further steps toward perfecting re organization ( until after Little's examination of the Atchlson's books , which is still In progress i , , Is completed Conjecture Is now busy with the question of Uclnhnrt's successor ser as president and receiver.
