and buggy from his employer for the purpose

took her in the buggy with him nnd drove
away. That was the last time the child

On July 31 the body of the child w.is found
in the Lchlgh river. Suspicion at once
pointed to the father ax the giiiity p.irty , ho
having told many conflicting stories as to

rested and at the coroner's Inquest 1 e bald
that ho had ghon the child to A man from
Philadelphia. A man named Zimmerman
tcstlllcd that Johnson told him ho met a mini
on the street and gave the child auay. The

held for court. He was tried before the

One of the witnesses , Annie KelUr , who
went to the livery stable on July 28 to se
cure the child for a Mrs , Huberts , teftlfled
that Johnson told her that he hail tlven ; the
child to a wom.in in the Sixth watd t < nd ho
would see If the woman would glvo her tip ,
telling Miss Keller to rail on him the fol
lowing Friday. On Friday when Miss Kel
ler called Johnson told her the party would
keep the child for two weeks. Oilier evl-
donce of a like nature was produced and the
Jury brought In a verdict of murder in the
first degree He was scntcno-tl to bo
hanged , but his attorneys had appealed to
the supreme court Justice U'.in cm May
23 , 1894 , handed down a lengthy opinion con
firming the decision of the lower c mrt. One
week later Johnson made a confession , bry-
ing that ho murdered the child because he
did not want to take care of It.

the penalty was the murder ot George Ochs ,
