So much business has been deferred durltiR
the past year and merchandise slocki have
been so reducetl , that the mere approach
of a decision without any certainty what
It Is to bo has this week cncouritKcil largo
preparation for Increased business. In spite
of outgoing gold and sinking treasury re
serves , small railroad earnings , some In
jury to crops and Increased trouble In the
coke regions , the tone and the outlook arc
more hopeful. The Injury to crops by hot
winds nnd drouth , If as gre.it as some te-
port , will affect all Intelrsts. but at this
season It Is never easy to distinguish be
tween local und general damage.
Western iceelpts of wheat were fiIOO,2il !
bushuli , against 1,092,69 $ last year , which
ioen ! not encourage notions of a short yield ,
nnd exports were only 1,599 GG3 bushels from
Atlantic ports , agulnit 3lS5.-lt > l last year.
Corn exports wcie only 1,116,3ft ) bushels ,

yield exceeding S.liOO.OOO bales.
Sales of wool were 8,522.000 pounds , ngalnst
3,742OTiO last year , and 3,33ii,400 the year be
fore , and for live weeks ending with July
were 30. 2,723 pounds , against U.ISS.D'iO ' last
year , nnd 3S,5SG,750 In 1M. . It seems that a
large part of the sales this week were to
(111 ( orders actually booked , and the ru li
of belated clothiers and dealers to get goods
for the fall trade gives most manufacturers
mote than they can ilo for a month or two ,
though there bcems to be no demand what
ever for prlng goods , and manufacturers
are making no effort to get ordeis. Wool
has been advanced for many kinds 1 cent ,
and the average about one-half of a cent ,
after the decline of ! ' < - cents fiom May 1.
Kec'ovety In lion mamifuctuict Is hin
dered by greater trouble In the coke legion ,
where many of the new coloied hands have

strikers have decided to continue the stiug-

Is no Improvement In quantities of m.inu-
factttied foims icqulrud at 1'lltsbm.g or the

ished products Is disappointing. Prices re
main nearly unchanged , though with nu
merous small contracts for slructur.il work
beams are a shade stronger , while Bes
semer lion , bar Iron and wire nails are n
hhade weaker.
The demand crowds all works producing
low pi Iced goods , while manufiictuiers of
bettor grades aie left dependent upon
slender dallv orders to keep their .shops In
operation. Shipments from Hoston for the
west nre 25 per cent larger than last year ,
and for July 12 per cent , but a dcciease ,
compared with 1S9J , of 11 per cent.
Commercial liabilities thus far reported In
failures during July amounted to $ l.0lfi.778 ,
of which JI.500.2JO weie of manufacturing ,
and $1,231,470 of ti.ullng concctno , and the
decieasp for the month , though gie.it In
comparison with last year. Is hardlv as
much as has been expected. The failures
this week have been 219 In the United
States , against 43G last year , and foi ty-four
In Canada , against thirty-four last year.

Modoruto Improvement nt n row Points ,
Partlriilurly In tbo Interior.
NEW YOIIK , Aug. 3. Hradstreet's to
morrow , August 4 , will say : While little
significance Is attached to the moderate
Improvement In the trade at San Fran
cisco , Plttsburg , Baltimore , Augusta and
Atlanta , when It Is added that clearing
house totals for July report twenty-nine
cities with larger aggregates thnn In July
last year , commuted with the June repoit ,
which contained eighteen cities with ag
gregates larger than those In June a year
ago , It Is presumed there arc Influences at
work at the Interior favoring an Increased
volume of business. Wool remains Uteady
nt last week's advance , speculation having
been stimulated by differences of opinion
as to the tariff outlook for the staple.
Wheat has advanced In sympathy with
corn and Incieased orders and reports of
crop damage from abroad , while corn's
sharp advance Is due partly to exaggerated
notions of damage from drouth. There Is
little likelihood of the corn ciop being
smaller than In cither of the two piccedlng
years , notwithstanding our advices of 25
l er cent damage nnd 10 per cent In Ne
braska. Southern crop prospects generally
aie excellent. Impiovement announced In
general trade at San Francisco Is caused
by the war In Japan , provision dealers par
ticularly anticipating largely Increased
trade. War between China and Japan has
not affected the price of te.i yet , although
pronounced demand Is noted at New York ,
Hoston and Chicago , Wheat exports ,
United States and Canada , both coasts , for
six davs ending with August 3 , amounted
to 2,097,000 bushels , ngalnst 3,380.000 bushels
last week , us computed with 5,022,000 bushels
In the same week one year ago.
