CHICAGO , Aug. 2. The dry , hot weather
Is still doing Us destructive work In corn ,
and with a prospect unrelieved by any sign
of Immediate general rain , a consequent
advance today of % c In wheat nnd Hfcc In
September corn , with stronger markets also
for oats and provisions , resulted.
Wheat was more active , price ? covering a
lUc range. The feeling was stronger and
higher prices prevailed. The better feeling
was attributed to the action of corn , the
higher cables , reports of wet weather abroad
and buying orders hero for foreign account.
The smaller arrivals and falling off In re
ceipts at primary markets were also some
thing of n factor. Another fac'or was that
operators were less disposed to sell short ,
nnd also u feeling In some quartern that the
market has turned and It will be difficult to
J < cop the price down. The market opened
with from V&c to Vic advance , with Sep
tember at 53"tc , and sold dawn Vic , advanced
from % c to Tic , declined from % c to J/4c.
milled from ? 4c to TAc , eased off Vie. changed
( some , ruled steady and closed at 5H4c for
September. The export clearances were large.
Selling at the advance caused temporary de
clines , but the close was only . ' 4c from the
day's top Ilgurcs.
Corn was excited and the market .wide.
The feeling which prevailed was a continuation
of that of yesterday , and prices again soared
higher. September shorts have evidently be
come much alarmed at the situation and cov
ered freely , resulting In a sharp advance , and
May sold up In sympathy. The somewhat
fehort receipts , light stocks , good cash de
mand , with the bulk of the regular corn sup
posed to be held largely by one Interest ,
created considerable of a s'lr among local
phorts , who were anxious to cover and found
Very little for sale nt times , local profes
sionals being less disposed to trade in that
future , and the most of the business was In
ftlpy. The market opened from Uc under tea
a trlllo over lust night's close , with Septem
ber atJ7c and May at 47c , and gradually
advanced 2'/4c ' for September and % for
May , eased off from % c to % c , rallied from
% c to Ic , changed some , ruled firm , and

Nay , The weather map showed that thu
k rain area Is extending nnd the drouth
being gradually broken , but Iowa and Nebraska -
braska have practically had no relief as ynt
nnd In many places ( he crop In Iowa Is past
the help of rain. The outsldo markets were
oil higher and cables came In quoting ad
vances. The Washington forecast for the
thirty-six hours was not very encouraging
to shorts. Indicating dry and warm condi
tions for Iowa and Nebraska.
Oats were active and stronger on good de
mand , scarce offerings anil the bulge In corn.
, The range for September was % c.
Provisions were lower at the start on lib
eral live hog receipts , but firmed up on the
advance In corn , closing near the top. TradIng -
Ing was light. Compared with last night ,

Thcro Win n Trlllo More Himlnrss Ilono In
N'BW YOHK , Aug. 2. There was a trlflo
more business done on the Stock exchange
toilay , the Increase being due to purchases
for foreign account. At the opening there
wcro buying orders on the board In St. Paul ,
Louisville & Nashville , Atclilson and Erie ,
and the tone of the market for American
uecurltlcH In London was strong , especially
for Louisville & Nashville , the Improvement
being duo to reports that the tariff deadlock
Is likely to bo broken within a few days.
Despite the fact that this report was en
tirely at variance with the facts as they
were understood to exist here , the London
opinion , backed by London buying , had an
olfect on the market , and during the tint
hour of business the trend of prices was
upward. The grangers , General Electric ,
Union Pacific , Erie and Consolidated Clas
became the most prominent In the advance ,
Sugar lost U Ior cent at the opening und
gained % per cent , but at U o'clock was
subjected to a bear drive , which put the
price down 1 % per cent , the selling being
bated on Washington advices stating that
a modification of the senate vugar schedule
would be agreed to which would materially
lessen the protection accorded to rellners ,
The general market did not sympathize with
the depression In Sugar. Speculation was
very dull during the hour before noon , the
market being Irregular on narrow fluctua
tions , except for New Jersey Central , which
advanced 14 per cent , subsequently reacting
H per cent , and Sugar , which , on fairly
good buying , credited largely to Insiders ,
roc % per cent. During the early after
noon Sugar wan neglected , making n further
advance of U per cent on small buying , but
shortly before delivery hour a large block
of stock was unloaded on the market , one
well known bear operator throwing over
0,000 shares , sending the stock down rap
idly and uncovering stop loss orders , which
brought out conslderabln long stock , thus
adding to the volume of talcs , until just be *
fnro tlio close * 102 was reached , being 2 %
per cent below the closing figure of yesterday ,
A recovery of % per cent followed , with a
final reaction of U per cent. The general
list was unsettled during the Afternoon , the
final dealings being irmclo on a fractional
rally , and the market closing fairly firm , ex
cept for Sugar , which lost 2'i per cent on
the day. The bond market was generally
firm all day.
The Evening Post says : Tlio Interesting
developments of today's market came In the
opening and closing half hours. In both
the movement hung on the Washington
situation. At the very start a new and
unlocked for factor came to view In the
shape of active London buying. This was
ascribed by the foreign houses to a sudden
conviction on the other side that the tariff
struggle was virtually settled. When the
foreign buying slackened and no more posi
tive advices came from Washington the ad
vancement of the market turned , the gen
eral list declining rapidly and Sugar stock
as rapidly recovering.

Hccclpts today were In round numbers
1,000 cattle and 10,000 hogs. For the week
thus far there have boon received C.SOO .
cattle , 53GOO hogs and 1,183 sheep , as against
8,002 cattle , 40,240 hogs and 1,277 sheep
for the first four days of last week.
While there has been a gain In the receipts
of hogs this week there has been n decrease
In cattle. The gain In hogs was all made
on the IIrat two days of the week ,
CATTLE There were no 'at steera In
the yards and practically no market. It
was claimed , however , that there was n
llttlo more Inquiry for cattle ot ( lint cltss
than there was on yesterday , but na the
butchers arc still on a strike It Is nol -rub-
able that'many could have been sold. The
prospect Is now that the market will be
very uncertain nnd the demand limited
until the strike Is settled. If the old men
should return to work there would be an
immediate demand , In alt probability , for
some cattle , but If the packers attempt
to start up with what new men they ran
pick up the general opinion Is th.it their
operations at first would not bo very heavy ,
and that no great number of cattle of any
kind would be required. Desirable butchers'
stock was not In large supply , anil the mar
ket on such was strong , the feeling being
better. Common and rough stock was ne
glected. More favorable reports from thu
country to the effect that the drouth In many
sections had been broken , nnd that thu
damage to the corn crop had been overes
timated , Is producing a better feeling In
the market for stackers nnd feeders. At
the same time there Is not much , If any ,
Improvement In prices , which are still very
low. Representative sales : '

HOGS The largo receipts of hogs was
something of a surprise after It had been an
nounced that the packing house men were
out on a strike and when shippers would
naturally Infer that buyers would be scarce.
It was probably Impossible for shippers to
realize that a market that took care of 20,000
hogs on Tuesday could not handle a reason
able number on Thursday , but they will be
better able to comprehend the situation when
the returns for today's sales are received.
The local packers were out of the market
entirely and shippers were the only buyers.
While there was a fair shipping demand It
did not come up to the offerings by a good
deal , and sellers were forced to make a liberal
concession In prices. The market was uneven
and fully lOc lower and In some cases 20c
was taken oft The range In prices Is becom
ing wider and there Is a great deal more sort-
Ing. The top hogs sold at $4.75 , with the
bulk at from $4.40 to $4CO. At the close
there were still a good many hogs unsold ,
largely trash , for which there appeared to be
no demand at any price. Representative

by Mrs. 'Cotter and Miss Molllo Cotter ,
mother and sister of the deceased.
The funeral services were held yestcr
day at the Holy Family church , which was
crowded with mourning friends of the
family and associates of the beloved dead.
A solemn high moss was celebrated by Ilev.
Father Hlllmun and at Its conclusion the
reverend father delivered a touching nO-
dross on tha worthy character and life
of the deceased.
The pall bearers were Messrs Charles F.
Tuttle , Fred S. McCormlck , Will Truckey ,
Fred C. Francis , John Dohaney , Jr. , Deri S.
Porterfleld. Interment In Holy Scpulchur
cemetery.
The sudden and untimely death of Miss
Cotter has evoked widespread sympathy and
regret In this city. She had been 111 for some
time , but nothing serious wns feared , and It'
was confidently expected that the trip to Ual-
tlmore for treatment would result In early
and complete restoratlun of health So strong
was this confidence that none of her three
brothers accompanied her. Mother and sister
were with her , but tholr affectionate care
and attention were of no avail. Death came
to them with no less shocking suddenness
than to the brothers then at Niagara Falls ,
and to anxious friends In this c'ty.
Miss Cotter wns a young lady of many ad
mirable traits. To a sweet , happy and buoy
ant disposition were added mental qualities
of a high order. She was a graduate of the
Immaculate Conception convent of Daven
port , la. , and was awarded the first gold
msdal Issued In twenty years for superior
work In art.
