Wheat became active for the day , tin

northwest sent a good nlmre of thu sclllni
orders , while advices from the spring whca
territory were very favorable. Cables wen

Oats were higher In sympathy with corn ,

NEW YORK , Aug. 1. There was n big boom
In the corn market on Ihe Produce exchange
today , which Impnitcd Itself to the other grnln
miirkets nnd caused a strong closing nil around.
The corn ring was transferred nt times Into n
howling crowd of operntom with a hubbub which
rivalled the dealings In wheat. Corn had been
advanced on diy weather news for some days ,
but late ycsteiday was weakened consldeiably
by weather predictions of rains through the
corn belt last night. They failed to m-ilerlnllze
and as n result the mnrkel toilny was a regular
"Ilieworks" affair nnd closed from ' ,4c to 2c
nlx > ve last night , with a change of about 2c
during Ihe day. No hope Is given of any rain
and crop dispatches arc glowing woise every
day. Already the price of corn Is within Pie
of the price of wheat. A month ugn It looked

NEW YOIIIC , Aug. 1. This was another
dull day on the Stock exchange , ami the
general trend of speculation wan In the di
rection of lower figures. The clilef op
erators In the market were the bears , and
the conditions favored them. The eecming
Irreconcilable difference : ! between the tennta
and houao on the tariff bill , giving promise
of an extended session ot congress and there
by keening the financial and commercial
community In a state of uncertainty , cannot
bo regarded as an Inducement to stocks
for a rise. The condition of the corn crop Is
not such , according to the most favorable
advices , us to lead to the opinion that the
granger roads will bo tested severely as
to their currying capacity to bring It to
market. Hold shipments are still being
made , nnd the treasury gold reserve Is declin
ing with a steadiness which Is looked upon
with disfavor , to say the least , by the finan
ciers of the country and the financial olQoers
of the government. Hut with all these un
favorable elements the stock market ulves
no evidence of Inherent weakness. Particu
lar stocks glvo way under Influences affect
ing them alone , and under the manipulation
ut cliques groups of stock depreciate In
value , ouly to recover whoa th manufac
tured pressure to cell Is removed. Hut n
general liquidation Is In progrei * , there I
no apparent desire on the part of-the hold
era of stocks to sacrifice them In , the fen
that the bottom Is about to drop out of th
market. On the contrary , while lower value
have been established , the declines Imv
been largely manipulated , nnd It hns re
( Itilrod heavy short tales to bring out
small amount of long stock. It IB a fac
that many of the leading shnrca arc no
heavily oven-old , and In some of them th
short Interest Is unyielding. For the lias
few days Sugar nnd the granger stocks Imv
been the only ones In which there has bee
any active trading , nnd as n rule they hnv
moved In opposite directions , Sugar gain

MINNEAPOLIS , Aug. 1. The Northwest
ern Miller says : Minneapolis mills last
week ground 171,120 barrels of Hour , against
153,000 the week before. Shortage of water
power Is badly handicapping them. There
appears to have been more life to the Hour
market last week , und though very low
prices had to be accepted , the sales re
ported approximated 220,000 barrels. There
wns quite free selling for export. The do
mestic trade still consists In the mnln of
sinull orders tlmt lire to be quickly turned
over again. Export shipments were 40,000
barrels , ngnlnst 31,000 barrels the week the
year before. The SuperKir-Dnliith mills
made 05,021 barrels , against r,2,4Sl , barrels the
previous week. Seven mills are this week
producing at the rate of 10,000 barrels dally.
Flour sales were inodcrntu last wei'k. The
export market Is dull ; stock of Hour nt the
mills and In transit Is 21,200 barrels. The Mll-
wntikeo mills ground 28,207 barrels , against
2U.G38 barrels the week before. They nru
drawing wheat from Chicago by lake to
grind. Foreign trade seems disposed to
make low prices on the basis of 17s Gil for
patents , London. Thu market In the east
Is unfavorable , an a rule.
