The report of rain anil prospects of rains
eninnatliiK from the various railway centers
nro numerous anil cncourneliiK. Moiulay nllil | ;
there was n heavy donlipour nil nluni ; the
line of the Milwaukee between the lllufts
and the Mississippi , the greater fall being
throughout the enstcrn section of Iowa.
There was a refreshing Btorm of Iwo hours
duration In the region roundabout Perry
yesterday morning.
Tlicrs liavo been good rains along the entire -
tire route of the Wabasli , and a vastly Im
proved look Is already reported In the crops
of nil kinds , particularly corn and pasturage.
Thu Fremont , Elkhorn & Missouri Valley ,
and the Chicago , St. Paul , Minneapolis &
Omaha , have both been well drenched. On
the Ulkhorn , from Omaha to Oakdalo , there
was a good fall , especially heavy and soak-
liii ; between Norfolk and Fremont. On the
Albion and Cedar Haplds branch they were
hivlalily visited , as far south as Llnwood
on the South I'latto and as far north as
Venllgrce. Along the Sioux City & Pacific ,
In Iowa , there were good rains Monday n ght
and yesterday morning.
The II. & M. reports a heavy fall of rain ,
but brief In duration , at Atwood , Ilcrndon
and Cambridge In the Republican Valley , nnd
spasmodic tJiowcrs at sundry other points.
On the Union Pacific yesterday they
had a beautiful rain storm , accompanied with
much electricity batween Omaha and Schuy-
ler and between Omaha and Mlllard Mon
day night.
Ilnilitlrs of Hot .Spring * .
J. II. Halford of the Hudson Htvcr rail
road passed through tha city yesterday
onrouto from Hot Springs , S. O. , to Now
York. "Do you know the reason , " he re
marked In the Elkhorn ofllce , "why
so many western people patronize the
eastern watering places and pack off to
Europe ? It Is simply becmiso they do not
know the wonderful resorts of their own Im
mediate vicinity. It may sound bettor to say
you are going abroad or to Saratoga , Newport
or Long Uranch , but so far as genuine sight
seeing , pleasure and health are concerned ,
It Isn't In It. The fact Is , some people choose
to go abroad to sizzle In heat , and chill In
fog among strangers , when It would be In
finitely more comfortable at some resort
hero < \y Dakota Hot Springs for Instance
In the midst of scenery which Switzerland or
Italy can't rival ; In a climate as pure as a
maiden's blush ; an altitude of pleasant cx-
hlloratlon ; where , good hotels , splendid
drives , and numberless attractions obtain ,
and above all , 'the plunge bath' of the
world entertains , cures and cleanses the mul
titude of their sins as well as their Ills.
Well , why do they go to Europe or east ?
Omaha lias this season , I nm told , gone
mainly to Dakota Hot Springs , secondly , to
Spirit Lake or Mlnnetonka , but quite a few
to Europe. "
Mr. Halford with his wlfo just returned
via the Elkhorn railroad from the Hot
Springs. Ho farther said his trip up was a
delight. Arriving In early morning In an
elegant Wagner sleeper In which they rested
adjacent to the Evans hotel until 7:30 : a. m. ,
got up and dressed leisurely and stepped
Just across the road to breakfast. When
they left , they took the sleeper again In
front of the hotel. "Oh ! " ho said , "wo are
rapidly acquiring all the conveniences and
the comforts of the best , oven out hero In
the wild and wooly west , "
IHnputt'i Cnlumlty I'l nres.
P. L. Beatty , a twenty-year resident of
Johnson county , was among the D. & M ,
arrivals yesterday. On Inquiry Mr. B aUy
said that It is all a mistake to say
that the corn crop In this state Is all gone
up , because It Is not so. He asserts that
the yield will be considerable above the
calamity figures now being circulated. He
said to show how the case stood , up In his
county , there were several stockmen coming In
with him yesterday for the special pur
pose of picking up "feeders , " young cattle
to put out on corn. Their Idea was that
owing to tlie scare reports being dissemi
nated throughout the state they could
pick them up cheap , say at less than one
half their actual worth. Mr. Beatty has
been ovci a good deal of territory and In
many places he says the outlook Is very good.
Between here and Lincoln It is not nearly as
bad as reported , nor west of Lincoln cither ,
only In spots. Douglas county ho estimates
will yield a three-fourths crop.
Iliirnoil a Depot.
During the electrical storm at Omaha
Heights yesterday morning the depot build
ing was struck by lightning and entirely con
sumed. It was a handsome little structure ,
on the Gothic plan of architecture , nnd was
the pride of the locality. There was no one
In tbe building at the time the bolt de
scended and fortunately no ono hurt.
Itulluny Notes.
Job Hathaway , manager of Burlington
beach , Salt lake , near Lincoln , came In on
the B , & M. yesterday.
It. II. Harris , the big 'Frisco packing
house man , returned to the City of the
Golden Gate via the Union Pacific yesterday.
II. A. Snyder , general agent of the Hock
Island , Is In Chicago. General Passenger
Agent Kennedy returned from Lake Mlnne
tonka yesterday.
Sixty-nine carloads of California fruit left
OgJen yesterday for Omaha and the cast
over the Union Pacific. And for the next
sixty days the shipment will undoubtedly
be tremendous.
J. P. Nichols , general superintendent of the
Nebraska division of the Union Pacific , Is
of the opinion that the recent rains have
been of Incalculable benefit to the state and
Insure more than half a crop of corn.
John M. Thurston says that the general
reports of the Union Pacific receivers are
under preparation , but there la no telling
when they will be completed and ready for
filing In tlio United States circuit court.
The Northwestern U handling a tre
mendous quantity of California fruit , more
than at any ono time In a dozen years.
There has been a big revival In this I radio
slnco the subsidence of tlio labor troubles.
The troops have not as yet been withdrawn
from along the western and northern lino.
At many stations the force has been reduced ,
but It will not bo wholly withdrawn until
things got back to their normal condition ,
Alt the roads report the biggest move In
stock , cattle and hogs over known In this
western country. Many are shipping through
fear of an absolute failure of the corn crop ,
and In many cases car loads of small pigs
have come In.
Holmes Dlalr , engineer of malntalnanco of
way of the western division of the I ) . & M , ,
was In the city yesterday onrouto for
Dennlson , la. Ho t > aya while the corn out
look Is pretty bad throughout the southwest
ern portion of the state , that the reports are
largely exaggerated.
The Union Pacific Is doing a gigantic Sun
day business with excursionists to Courtland
beach. All of the excursions that converge
hcra on the different lines , the Union Pa
cific gets for trantportatlon to the beach.
Fifteen cents pays tor the round trip , In
cluding admission to the beach.

tral having reached Onawa and Intending

HER WIIifTwAS VJ2RY BRIEF. \
1'rnlmto Court CnlU'il on to Dnnl with '
Hoiiirtlilnc ; nf n C'tirlonlly.
Ono of the most reinnrknblo will cases
that has over appeared on the docket of the
Douglas county court wns being heard bo era
JudRO llnxtar yesterday. The document
at Isstio Is , the lust will nnd testament , of
Mrs , Marie Mndcr , who dlod nt her rcsldenco
In this city about the middle of April.
Mrs. Mader wns n woman who was sold ,
to have had n remarkable history. She
first came to Omaha In the arly ' "O's nnd
soon became well known In Herman circles.
She was a person , of marked ability and
was n prominent factor In the literary nnd
dramatic events of the local German world.
In these days tha dramatic pcrformunr.es
Ktvcn by thu German society In the old
Turner halt on Tenth street Jivoro con
ducted on a largo scale and acquired a well
merited reputation for their excellence ,
which was commented on not only In Omqun ,
but all through the state.
In these performances Mrs , Madcr always
took a leading part , and her Interpretation
of some of the prominent roles of the stand
ard German dramas was marked by a de
gree of ability that attracted considerable
attention. The fact Unit she wns said to
have n very romantlco history before her
appearance In Omaha did not detract from
the prominence which she acquired In the
best circles of German society. *
During this tlmo Mr. Mailer was tha edi
tor of the leading German paper of the
city. Previously ho had occupied the Mime
position on German papers In St. Joe und
other cities. Ills newspaper venl'iro In
this city wns not a financial success nnd
Ilimlly ho was compelled to abandon It. At
this tlmo the advantage of having it suimlbla
\vlfo was made apparent. Mrs , Madcr asldo
from her histrionic ability had also the
reputation ot being the best cook In Omaha.
It was said , whether justly or not no ono
over knew , that before her emigration to
tl.is country she had been at the head of
the kitchen of the king of Ltavarla , and stio
then conceived the Idea ot turning this ac
quirement to account.
Shu opened a boarding house which at
once became tlio headquarters of the leadlnu
lights In German society. Among the
boarders were numerous young men whom
, m- now among the most prominent German
citizens of Omaha nnd the social position
of the landlady ns well ns her well known
ability In the culinary line made her house
a very popular homo.
After some tlmo she gave up her boardIng -
Ing house to become head cook for Ed
Matter , but subsequently had a dispute with
him In regard to n question ot wages and
rr-ostnbllshed herself In the boarding house
business In the old building on Tenth street ,
nearly opposite the present location ot the
Windsor hotel. There her old boarders
came back to her and she did a flourishing
business. Two or three yonrs before her
death , and as she grew advanced In years ,
she gave up business and settled down to
spend the remainder of her life In quiet.
She had made enough money so that the In- ' >
tcrest sulllcod for her wants und she lived '
In quiet retirement until her death.
Some time after her death her will , w s
filed for probate. This was In brevity and <
form the most remarkable document of tlio
kind that has ever been before this court ,
the following being a complete copy :
"It Is hereby my will If I die , that every
thing I leave belongs to Mrs. Kosu Schmidt.
Marie Mailer. "
The name of Fanny 1'rlbyl and Christian
Obermollcr wore also signed under her own , 4
but whether as witnesses or not did not np- 1
pear. Not a shred of writing npcared on
tlio-pnper except that given above , and the
curious document was tha. cause of con
siderable comment at the time.
A. S. Drown was appointed administrator
of the estate , and the present Issue la an no
tion brought by him through Ills attorney
to decide on the legality of the w.ll , Rosa
Schmidt came to Omaha from St. Joe ,
whore she first formed the acquaintance ot
Mrs. Mader. She Is a csstumer , and still
occupies the shop at Eleventh and Harncy
streets.
She used to furnish the materials for the
Gorman theatricals In which Mrs. Madcr
was a leader , and In this way became an In
timate friend of the deceased.
Mrs. Madcr has no relatives that have been
discovered , the only heirs being two or thres
grandchildren out In the state nnd several
relatives equally distant In the old country :

Olllccr Storey exchanged a number of shots
with two suspicious characters on the south
sldo of the High school grounds at 2:30 : yes

The ofllcer was patrollng Dodge street , near
the school grounds , when he noticed two men
sneaking along In the shadows. He called to
them , when ono of the men drew a revolver
and. fired three shots at him. The officer
brought his own pistol Into play nnd fired
four shots , the last ono evidently finding a
mark , as ono of the fellows uttered a cry 1
denoting pain and staggered for a moment.
He recovered , however , und , with the assist
ance of his comrade , managed to escape In ]
the vicinity of Twentieth and California
streets.
Olllcer Story Is sure that ono of his shots
hit hard. Olllcers were scouring the neigh
borhood for the men ut daylight. It la
thought the men were burglars who had
planned a robbery near the High school
grounds. '
The city Is full ot Idle and suspicious
