6 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SATURDAY , JULY 2 , 1801. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIA Corn Led the Grain Market a Lively Dan Yesterday , IN THE END WHEAT BECAME BULLI ! For Slay i livery there was a bulge of 3140 per bu. a a net gain of 2c nt the close , and Septum ! closc < l fcc higher. The bad effect on the cr by the scorching heat was the cause of t advance. In the struggle for life of t great 2,000,000,000-bti. monster of a corn crt It drew the little 150,000,000-bu. wheat ylc Info the whirl of Its tall lashings and so the latter tossing up and down for two hoti like a professional mourner at a variety pt formance. In the end wheat reasserted 1 bearish nature , and , after an advance Uc , closed weak at an advance of Vic. I'r Visions wcro firm and made another mode gain In values. In wheat there was a fair trade and rath a more active market , prices covering fro lc to lc range. The market opened wl free selling at C2'/4c for September , a trl of an advance , and sold down from 1' , to I He , rallied from le to lc , broke 1 changed some and closed at 52c for Sc tcmber. The purroundlng features we rather bearish , but the corn situation w something of a factor and tended to sustn the market. Cables were weak , recelp large and fresh exports small , which acti as depressing factors , as also did the ta of a liberal Increase In the visible supp Monday. The bulge In corn rather offs these Influences In a measure , as It was It : agl'ned that the scarcity of food stuffs at high prices for the same would have a ten cncy to offset wheat. The export clearance of wheat and flour were fair and riggregati 467,000 bit. , of which 188,000 bu. was flour. Closing cables were generally weak and lower. There was no export buslne doing here and nothing at the seaboard. Corn was active ? and higher , with tradlt heavy and the market broad , with lluctu lions covering from Ic to 2V4o range. The ; was an urgent demand from shorts , and tl country bought freely , the opening belt very unsettled and prices Irregular at fro I4c to Ic higher for September and lc fi May. The market eased off from % o to % willed from ' ,4c to 2V&cvorke < l down fro lo to ' ,4c and closed at 44c for Septembe The showers predicted again failed to in. terlallze , and newspapers were full of dan ago and drouth reports , some being mo sensational , and created a great deal of an : Icty among shorts , who sold freely yeste day , but hastened to cover at the opening < today. Country buying orders were muc more numerous , and especially from low and Nebraska , where It Is supposed by man operators that the crop has been permanent ! Injured. Realizing at 'the advance caused sharp break , but the market rallied an closed firm. Oats were stronger In sympathy with cor and on the unfavorable weather In the wes The range was Ic for September , and tli close showed a gain of % c for that deliver ; Provisions were firm during the greatc part of the session on scarce offerings an the strength In corn , but weakened near tli finish when corn declined. Compared with last night , September per Is 6c higher , September lard 2',4c higher an September ribs 2'/4c higher. The Internal reven receipts on whisky suddenly dropped mo tlmn half , nnd sales of wool preatly I creased. Hut the uncertainly Is not r moved , and much of the business do ! seems to be In the nature of Inauran nitnhist ponslbllltlcH. Wheat has found the lowest depths , ni deeper still , and has sold below r > 'r cenl mtiklnif the monthly average nt New Yoi the lowest ever known. Western reeelp have been G.4 ! > 5STI bushels , n alnst 3,129,2 bushels last year. In part because of d layed shipments , but the movement fro the farms has bt-en heavy , while Atlanl exports have been only 1,511,061 bushel nftnlnst 2,037,0V ) bushels last year. Corn was strouuer , with accounts of I Jury to part of the crop , and the expor are trlfllnc. Cotton declined n. sixteenth 7 cent. " , though receipts from plantatloi wc-re small. Ortlclnl reports count for not Intf In comparison with enormous vlslb stocks. Textile Industries have been perceptlb stimulated , arcordltiR to dealers , by dl nKrecments which many suppose may pr vent n change of HIP tiirlft. and there hi been more buying of "common Roods , wll slightly hlKhCT nrlcr-H for a few. Notwltl Btnndlntr the closing of some Importai mills , the .stock of such Roods Is , on tl whole , quite large. In woolens the KOOI famine which clothiers prepared by then selves deferring orders IH such that In perntlve necessities now keep most of tl mills nt work , nnd purchases of wools fi Immediate use arc larse. Hut there Is i change for the better ns respects ordei running Into the future , nnd Indeed son concerns have withdrawn spring sanipli on which very low prices had been fixe and will make no effort for trade. The price of wool has been greatly swellc by speculation , In the belief that wool not likely to decline In nny event and wl advance sharply If tariff changes fnll. Salt for the week were 9,031,100 pounds , again : 4COO.iOO ! pounds last year. In four weeV of July sales were 22,3.9,3S5 pounds , again : 10.fiM.900 for the same period In 1893. While scarcity of coke delays resumptlo of work In many central nnd western Ire mills , the light Inquiry for finished pnwluci nt Chicago and the disappointing deman west of I'lttsburg raises doubt whethc nny material Increase can be expected ui til the tariff question Is out of the was The demand for sheets Is better nt Chlcagi and there are numerous orders for striu turnl work at Plttsburg , with rather bettc demand for bars , but nothing like the c > peeled rush. l'"or the week failures have been 24D In th United States , against 2C8 last year. Bradstreet'a n view of the state of trade will say tc morrow : Leading Influences affecting th course of general trade throughout th United States within a week have not re suited In any gain. Prolonged drouths an hot winds have damaged corn nnd othc crops In Nebraska , and fears are entci tnlned of like losses In Kansas. Wlthot early rains the reduction In the yield o corn Is expected to be considerable. Th outlook for the yield In the spring when states IB regarded as unfavorable , whlc reacts upon country merchants and check demand. Several thousand striking miner In Ohio , Indiana and Alabama refuse t return to work at the rate agreed upo In conference , nnd this continues to depres business throughout tributary regions. Iror steel and other Industries are humpere throughout the Plttsburff district for lac ! of coke , which restricts production In th face of a mild demand and keeps the prlc or spot Hessemer pig and billets about i dollar higher than quotations for future dc livery. Continued , exports of gold from Nev York are regarded as an unfavorable In lluence , nnd there are more unfavorubl reports as to mercantile collections. More serious In Its disorganizing effect on general business la the continued dela- to tariff legislation , few merchants carlnj to try to provide for prospective want In view of the uncertainty. The othe .side reveals reports of moderate Improve ment In general trnde at a larger numbe of points than last week , Improvement h Ihc outlook for the Columbia river cannlni pack. Increased activity In nil leading line at San Francisco , full and regular frul shipments east from the Paclllc coast , ai Improved demand for Iron nnd steel n St. Louis. Plttsburg and other centers , am practically complete restoration of rallwa ; freight service throughout the country. Exports of Wheat , United States am Canada , both coa-sts , for six business day : ending July 2 , have Increased surpris Ingly , amounting to 3,380,000 bushels. Las week the total was 1,873.000 bushels , and li the week before 2,377,0:0 bushels. One yea : ago In the fourth week of July the export : were 4,303,000 bushels ; two years ago It woi 2,525,000 bushels. There have been 327 business failures In the United States this week , compared wltf 212 last week , with 4S9 In the fourth weel if July last year , when the effects of th < 'Inanclnl ' panic were beginning to be fel liy the business community. This Is par ticularly true with respect to Chicago ami 3t. Louis , although at the first named then H little Improvement ns compared with lerlods Immediately preceding the railway itrlke. St. Louis continues its exception- lily favorable report , particularly with re- 't-rence to manufacturers of shoes , jobbers n hats , hardware , leather , drugs , Iron luiO iteel. NKW YORK , July 27.-Brndstrcet's flnan. : lnl review tomorrow will say : This was mother week of waiting for action on the tariff. Irregular and somewhat narrow luctuntlons In Sugar stock have conse- luently been the only feature of Interest. : 'rofsslonal operators , It Is true , have In- lulged In Bhort Helling of thu grangers , only o lincl that long stock did not come out md thnt the reported damage to the corn irop had little real effect. The ensuing cover- ng created a little stronger tone In the uIIrond list , but , generally speaking , the iroceedlngH have been duller even than the iverago of warm weather markets. Thu mbllc Is entirely out of speculation , nnd Condon Is still Indisposed to take nny part vhlle the uncertainty about the business md financial situation here Is permitted to ixlst. The alleged Atchlson disclosures iroduced nn unfavorable Impression on the .omlon market , but It Is noted that there vns very little selling of the stock from lint quarter. This was another day of largo hog receipt but the receipts of cuttle wcro the smallc since Monday. The day's receipts footed i about 1,400 cattle , 11,000 hogs and 50 shoe against 1,332 'rattle and 7,338 hogs on Krldi of last week. For the five days of this wci the receipts Imvo been 9,400 cattle , Gl,2 hogs and 1,328 sheep , as compared wll 7,079 cattle , 35,850 hogs and 2.C53 sheep. Th shows a great gain In both cattle and hoi this week. CATTLE While the total receipts of catt were light , there were among the offerlni quite a few loads of pretty fair dressed be steers. The market was a little more act ! ' than It has beim during the past two i three days. The local packers , howove were about the only buyers , there belt very little demand from the outside. Tl prices paid were a little stronger than yeste day on the most desirable of the offering A bunch of 1,211-lb. steers brought $4.2 which was the top price of the day. A lari proportion of the sales were made at ( above $1. The cow market was about steady on a grades. The demand for the most dcslrab was fairly active , and the offerings wei pretty well cleaned up before the clos There were n few sales at $2 to $2.30 , but It common run of grass cows went at froi $1.25 to $1.76. The fresh receipts of stockers and fcedei were very light. Yard traders all had son cattle , and as there was very little deman for them they did not appear very nn.xlot to add to their supplies and were talkin pretty low prices for the fresh receipt The general trade , what there was of I did not show much change as compared wit yesterday.
