CHICAGO , Jifly 25. Iletter cables and ad
vancing outside markets firmed wheat up
early In the session today , but the price broke
later and September closed Un lower than
last nlcht. Corn closed % c lower , oats % c
lower and provisions slightly higher. There
was a fair trade In wheat during the first
part of the session , but only ordinary Inter
est was displayed later In the d.iy. The feel
ing was fairly steady. Initial trades were
at D3c , September atlie advance , cased
off from % c to ftc , rallied He , changed some
nnd closed steady at 03' ' c. This early
strength was attributed mainly to the stead
ier cables , advances In outside markets , the
rather smaller movement , today's receipts
falling short of the estimates some eighty-six
cars nnd the bulletins from the spring wheat
districts showing a light yield In that BCC-
tlon. The early action of corn also helped
to a minor extent. First cables ciuoted spot
quiet and steady and futures dull to firm at
unchanged prices. The rather liberal exports
was something of a factor and aided the ad
vance. Toledo reported the loading of an
other small boat with wheat to be shipped tc
this market , and this , with the prospect of
more favorable weather , caused the dcclJno In
the latter part of the sestrton.
Opening trades In corn were nt from Vic
to % c advance , at 41140 for September , and ,
after selling up a fraction more , cased off
Jrom % c to l',4c , rallied Vic , declined % c
nnd closed at 43UC. The feeling at the start
Was decidedly stronger , vlth the count y buy
ing freely , receivers und commission houses
kclnc on the buying side , nnd the weather
was dry and hot all through the middle and
western statis. The price held fairly steady
until the prediction was announced for rain
In Iowa nnd Nebraska , when the price re
ceded sharply.
Oats were firm early on good buying and
unfavorable crop reports , but weakened later
with wheat nnd corn. The range wns V4c
lor September.
Provisions were very dull , with no sales In
pork. The market was firm on scarce offerIngs -
Ings and light receipts of products. Com
pared with Inst night , September lard Is 2Vio
blghcr nnd September ribs Cc higher.
Freight rates nre abatable at % c for wheat
or corn to Port Huron or Uuffalo.
Estimates for tomorrow : Wheat , 45 cars ;
corn , 2CO cars ; oats , 140 cars , hogs , 27,000
bead.
The leading futures ranged as follows :

Ingly. A grower paid that his grapes were doing
finely until about ten days ago they were at
tacked by u mould , which Is going to spjll his
crop. It Is not probnble that this mould Is
general among grapes of this country. In llur-
llngton und vicinity the grape prospect Is excel
lent. Reports from elsewhere arc bright. The
Nauvoo Hustler , In speaking of the grape pros-
peois of that locality , says : "The yield will be
Immense If good fortune smiles on the vlntnetH

to grow , and this yiar , ns usual , thousands of
gallons of wine will be manufactured to gladden
the heart of man. "

WEDNESDAY. July 25.
This has been another day of quite largo
receipts. The arrivals were 3,000 cattle ,
11,700 hogs and 67 she-p , as against
2,623 cattle , 0,814 hogs nnd 106 sheep onVed -
nesduy of last week. For the week thug fur
there Imve been rcclved 6,150 cattle , 27,800
hogs nnd 1,116 sheep , as against 4,21S cattle ,
18,259 hogs nnd 1,888 sheep for tha corresponding
spending days of last week. From this It will
be noted that the receipts of cattle and hogs
this week are considerably Inrger thnn they
were last week ,
CATTLE There was qulto n sprinkling
of good to choice corn fed beeves In the
ynrds today. The local packers wanted n
few cattle , but they were about the only
buyers , the shippers and export men holding
off. The market generally was about lOo
lower , unless It might be on something that
wns especially desirable , such ns the handy
fnt little cattle. One bunch of cattle weigh
ing 1,132 pounds brought $4.25 , which wns
the top price paid during the day. A largo
proportion of the sales of dressed beef cat
tle were made nt $4 to $4.20.
There was considerable Inquiry for choice
cows nnd heifers , but not mnny were to be
found In the yards. The offerings consisted ,
as has been the rule lately , of common grassy
stuff , for which the demand Is light and
prices extremely low. The general innrket
wns slow. A load or two of cows sold ns
high as $2.30 , but the most of the sales wcro
made at $1.25 to $2. Heifers sold largely
at $1.35 to $2.15.
The situation In stackers and feeders Is
becoming worse. The continued dry weather
In the country , which has ruined the pastures
and hay crop and Is.threateiiing to reduce the
yield of corn , tins'cut oft the demand for
this class of cattle 'from the country , nnd It
would Eccm ns If the market Is In nbout as
bad condition as possible. Prices hnvet been
so low that It did not seem as If they were
going much lower from day to day , during
the past few days. At the same time dealers
who have been hojdlng cattle but a short
time can figure out a drop of 25o In a very
short time. In spile of the poor condition
of the market quite n string of cattle
changed hands today , $2.80 being paid for
two or three loads. A large proportion of
the fair to good feeders brought $2.25 to $2.40.

HOGS The demand for hogs keeps up
and In spite cf the largo receipts there ap
pears to be 'a place for all that the country
can send In. Local packers and shippers
are nil large buyers , and prices have been
well maintained this week. Today's market
opened active , and though weak at one time
closed at about the opening prices. The
general market was about EC lower than
yesterday's early market , but a little better
than yesterday's clo e. The great bulk of
the hogs sold at $ I.7G4.80 , with a $1.90 top.
On yesterday the bulk of the sales were
made at $4.75@4.85 , there being more sales

ALPERSON DIVORCE FIGHT ON AGAIN
Iluslmnit Accused of Trying to Defraud III *

points u Krcelvur.
The much contested divorce ca-o of the
Alperson family was again In hearing be
fore Judge Scott yesterday. It came up
oti an application of the attorneys for Ke-
becca Alperson to have the court Issue an
attachment for her former husband to ap
pear In court nnd show cause why ho waa
not guilty of contempt of couit.
When Judge Ambrose refused the appli
cation of John Alperson for a divorce from
Ills wife , Itebecca , ho made an order that
Alpcrion should pay to Howard Ilaldrldgo ,
as trustee , the sum of $500 , to bo used for the
maintenance of his wife. Ho also ordered that
Alperson should not dispose of any of tlio
goods in Ills store ut Eleventh and Capitol
avenue except through tlio ordinary chan
nels of trade , In crdcr that , If tlio money
wus not forthcoming wftliln a given tlnio ,
the trustee might dlHposo of tliu stock In
order to raise tlio amount.
Lately Mrs. Alperson represented that her
former husband was moving away and se
creting the stock In order to deprive her of
her rights under the ruling of the court and
the hearing on this charge came on yes
terday. The attorneys for Mrs. Alperson
produced a number of allldavlts of pcr.ona
who claimed that they hud ecnn Alperson
moving away tlio goods on the night of July
23 , whllo Alpcrnon denlid that ho had dis
posed of goods except to customers as here
tofore. Tic court dually declared that ho
would appoint a receiver to take churgo ot
tlio goods and dispose of them to the best
advantage In order to protect tlio rights ot
MrAlperson. .
