occasion for an Interesting gathering of
Omahans at the residence of Mrs. P. H.
Mathewspn on Omaha Heights In East Los
Angeles. The Omaha , past residents who
were present were Judge and Mrs. Oroff ,
Mrs. Gregory , Judge and Mrs. Porter , Mr.
and Mrs. M. G. McKoon , Mr. and Mrs. S.
C. Hawyer , Mrs , A. B. Slaughter and Mrs.
Carr and two daughters. These persons are
all residents of .different parts of Los An
geles. The reception was given In honor
of the doctor and his wife.

been on a visit to William Campbell of the
grocery firm of W. L. Robblns & Co. , In
Stocton. Mr. Campbell Is a recent Ne-

Injured In n Collls on.
Al Carpenter and R. C. Young passed
through a perilous experience last evening.
Mr. Carpenter works nt Hammond's and Mr.
Young Is timekeeper at Swift's. The two
were on their way home about G o'clock
In Mr. Young's buggy , and were driving
out Twenty-fourth street and had just passed
I street when they were run down by a
heavy trnn fer wagon and frightfully bruised ,
cut and wounded.
The heavy wagon wns being driven by
Henry Grabbcrt , who had loft his team
unhitched and was climbing up to the high
seat of his wagon when n motor car passed ,
and the horses started on a fast run north
on Twenty-fourth street. Before going 100
yards the team ran Into the ' rear
of Mr. Young's buggy. The big
tongue of tha wagon struck the buggy
squarely In the center of the rear axle and
smashed the outfit Into kindling wood In a
jiffy. The driver of the big wagon was
thrown to the pavement before the collision
occurred and Mr. Young and Mr. Carpenter
were pitched up under the rear end of the
heavy wagon , bleeding and wounded. They
were carried to the porch of Albert Florch's
saloon and attended by Dr. Thomas Kellcy
and Dr. Slabaugh. Two hours later they
were taken to their homes. It wilt be
several days before they are able to be
out. _
Death of Mr. l.uytim's Motlirr.
Mra. Eleanor Woods , mother of Mr. D. B.
Lnyton , aged S3 years , died at the homo of
her son , two miles south of this city , yester
day morning. The funeral took place this
afternoon at 2 o'clock , the remains being laid
to rest In Laurel Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Woods came to this vicinity six years
ago and has made her home with her son
over Blnco. She was a woman beloved by
all who knew her , having a kind and loving
disposition and being a Christian lady who
was always trying to do something to make
others happy , Mr. Layton Is one of the two
oldest and wealthiest residents of Sarpy
county. He has inndo the declining years
of his aged mother as comfortable as possible
and has the sympathy of a largo circle of
acquaintances In his loss. The funeral was
largely attended.

Thomnj Spohn and Mr. Martin were ar
rested on complaint of Grant Honor , charg
ing them with gambling at faro. The war
rant was Issued from Justice Montgomery's
court and the defendants were placed under
$300 bonds each to appear for trial Friday.
It Is claimed that thp defendants have
gambled at different housra In both Omaha
and South Omaha and that after losing
money they have brought suits to recover
what cash they allege to have lost. In each
case , however , It Is said they have comprom
ised matters nnd withdrawn the suits. The
gamblers look upon them as blackmailers ,
and It Is proposed to prosecute them under
the stnto law. The penalty for gambling Is a
fine of from $100 to $200 and one year In the
penitentiary for the first offense.

Herman , French and Indian , and a man of
energy and great executive ability , besides
the other qualities necessary In a bishop ,
No word has as yet been received by the
priests of the dloceso about the matter of
a successor , nnd most probably It will ha
three months before the matter It taken
up. It would , therefore , bo premature to
speak about the candidate most desirable.
There Is good material In the diocese to
make a selection from. Among the possi
ble candidates are mentioned : Fathers
Chrlestlc and Cleary of Minneapolis , Father
Helfron of St. Paul , Father P. Rosen from
Fairfax , who for nlno years worked In the
lilnck Hills and Is acquainted with the
needs of the diocese ; Father Shcclinn , on
of the pioneer priests of the diocese , and

leaving of Bishop Marty Is general , and It
