Nn\V YOIUC , July 18. Wore It not for
tlio speculation In Su nr today's stock mar
ket would have been Irredeemably dull. The
little trading done was very Irregular , and
held to bo for quick returns , and by the
room traders almost entirely. Stipar opened
unchanged , reacted U per. cent to 99'4 ' ,
which was the lovve t touched. About 1.30
o'clock a brisk buying movement was de-
\eloped , based on Washington advices to
the effect that the senate conferees Insisted
on holding the sugar schedule as It left the
senate , and the shares continued to advance to
the clo c , making a gain of 27i per cent
from the low point of the morning and 2H
per cent from ycsterd.ij's closing pr ccs.
The late Washington dispatches Indicated
u disagreement between house and senate
conferees on the tariff , with sugar as one
of the points of difficulty. If this should
leid to the filltiro of the bill altogether It
would entirely ruin the nig.ir refining people
ple , who arc fully satisfied with the present
tar.ff. As a matter of fact , houses which
sold the stock heavily yesterday were buy
ers late today Distilling lost Vi per cent
at the opening , and then rose ' /i per cent
to 20. Toward noon the bears made an at
tack on the pioperty , sending the prlco
down to 19. vslth a sub uquent rally of Vj
per tent There was no special news re
garding the slock , but the short Interest
therein has been largely Increased and the
stock Ins become scarce In the loan market.

WEDNESDAY , July 18.
Today's receipts of 'cnttlo ' were Iho largest
since Tuesday of last week , nnd the hog re
ceipts the largest since 1'rlilay. There were
In the yards In round numbers 2,000 cattle ,
9,600 hogs nnd 100 sheep. Thus far this
week there ha\o been received 1,200 cattle ,
18,100 hogs and l.SSS sheep , ns against 13-
315 cattle , 31,721 hogs and SOO sheep for
the first three days of last vvcok.
CATTLH iv'hlle there wore ( jultc n num
ber of cattle In the yards the offerings of
good corn fed beeves were light. The
majority of the cattle were stocUcrs , feed
ers and butchers' stock. The mnrket on beef
steers was slow , and the few hero were not
all sold. In addition to being slow the mar
ket was \cry weak and perhaps lOc lower
In many cases.
Good to choice cows and heifers sold at
about ycstcrdaj's prices , but trashy stuff ,
which formed a large proportion of the offer
ings of butchers' stock , was slow and about
lOc lower Calves were also lower In consequence
quence of the largo receipts.
The stocker and feeder trade was very
slow , and sellers were more numerous than
buyers. The country dees not appear to be
in a mood to buy feeders just at present ,
and for that reason the trade la dragging.
It Is claimed that the dry weather In the
country nnd the unsatisfactory condition of
the market on beeves Is discouraging to
feeders and tint they arc waiting for n bet
ter outlook before bujing The market today
HOGS At the opening of the market ship
pers bought a few hogs at about yesterday's
prices , but the trade soon weakened to Co
lower. As the more urgent orders were
filled and the buyers dropped out of the mar
ket prices became still weaker , and the
market clo ed fully lOc lower , with a num
ber of loads still unsold. Representative
