victim yesterday , Mrs. Joel Campbell of
Knlrlleld , la. , beliifi almost Instantly killed.
Monday Mrs. Campbell , aged 81 years ,
came to this city to visit her son , Dr.
Campbell , residing at 1220 South Thlrty-
fcpcoml street. She romaliu l at the resi
dence over nlKlit and In the morning started
to return , bulns accompanied to the union
depot by the dootor. Upon arriving there
she learnud that her train had departed ,
so she concluded to remain another day.
Coming up from the depot the doctor trans
ferred his mother at Sixteenth street , putting
her on the I'ark avonua line , ho returning
to his olllce. The train In charge of
Conductor Lewis nnd Motorman Ruble
moved off at the regulation speed and
nt the Tlilrty-tecontl street and Woolworth
avenue Intersection Mrs. Campbell signaled
to stop. However , Instead of walling for
the cars to como to a stop nt Woolworth
avenue , she jumpd off about fifty feet north
of the north line of the street , striking the
brick pavement with the back of her head
nnd fracturing the skull. She was picked
tip by the trnlnmon nnd cnrrlu.1 to her son's
hotibo , four doors distant , where she died
half an hour later.

como to a standstill. As the conductor
saw her In the act of jumping from the

prints the following : "Tho Kuropcan rate
war Inaugurated by the loading steamship
lines may result In a wholesale exodus from
Chicago of many men connected with the
late strike. Never before In the history of
steamship rates has It been possible to go
from Chicago to a European port so cheaply.
Slnco the cut rate has been Inaugurated the
exodus from Chicago and the northwest to
various points in Europe has figured up a
third of the traffic to New York , accoidlng to
the estimates of local steamship lines , mid
the announcement of the last great cut In
rates has started n real exodus of Kuiopea'i
born people. Dozens of men who said they
wore on a strike hnvo been making Inquiries
at local steamship ofllceH within the last few
days , expressing their Intention of leturning
to the 'old country" in case the btriko was
a failure. There are half a do/.en Interesting
phases of the present situation , and there is
much food for thought In the depletion of
the standing army of unemployed In Ihl.s
country by the return of thousands of
workers to their old homos abroad. It Is
estimated that before long labor will bo at
a premium Instead of a discount , and there
are not a few who figure on n
season of prosperity as a consequence , of the
return to Hnropo of thousands who hive
boon In the past MX months unsuccessful
candidates for employment. At the present
time It Is possible to go from Now York
to Liverpool , Qneenstown or London for $10
on two great lines. This , of course , Is a
steerage rate , there being no cut In first or
second cabin rates. Ono line olTeis to de
posit the passengers In Paris for $18 and the
other line will do the same for $17.25. Ital
ian customers bid from New York to Turin
for ? 23 and the railways are offering n
through ticket from Chicago to Turin , Italy ,
for $ : ! ! ) . Never before have rates been so
low and It Is small wonder the thrifty for
eigners ( lock to take advantage of the pres
ent rates. After the Debs-Pullman strike
was declared off a rush of men naturally fol
lowed for Kuropean passage. Local steam

of a heavy exodus to all parts of Europe.

road matter of great Importance will bo
heard before Judge W. H. Sanborn of the
United States circuit court. The receivers
of the Union Pacific will be asked to ap
pear before the court pursuant to an order
to show cui30 : to them granted about a
month since , und asked that a largo num
ber of tlio branch lines of the Union Pa
cific road bo no longer considered or con
ducted ns n part of the Union Pacific sys
tem , but they bo hereafter regarded ns In
dependent lines. The reason for this action
Is that these branch lines ate not earning
sufllclont money to pay opnr.itlng expenses
and taxes. They are a Totibtsnt drain
upon the Income of tliu Union Pacific road ,
which has hcon obliged to advance money
to maintain them , and the rci-clvcrs ask that
their action at previous times In in , living
these advances bo approved by the coiut.

General Solicitor Thurslon of the Union
Pacific goes to St. Paul this evening
to present on Thursday before Judge Sanborn
reasons why the Union Pacinc should bo al
lowed to forego tlio operation of roads not
earning operating expenses. Mrs. Thurston
will accompany the solicitor on his trip.
It Is greatly regretted by the many friends
of Mrs. Thurston that she returns to Omaha
not materially benefited by her trip to
Kelchum. Idaho. She Is suffering from ner
vous prostration and Judge Thunton believes
that excitement attendant upon traveling will
prove beneficial to a bercived mother.
