At the opening the market was harely steady and quickly gave way under the Influence of a soiling movement , directed first against Chicago cage Gas , but which was subsociuently di rected against Distilling und In less force toward other shares. Sugar was at this tlmo In good demand and moved up % per cent , being held firmly until depressed by reports of a disagreement In the tnrllt con ference committee , when sales to realize profit , added to selling for the short account , caused a break ot 2if , per cent , the last being the lowest price of the day. Con siderable stock was taken all the way down by brokers who generally act for the In side clique , which gives color to a belief held in home quarters that a squeeze of the shorts Is In contemplation. The old short Interest In the stock was materially lessoned this morning , considerable bor rowed stock being used. Distilling was the subject of a fierce bear raid , which wns ac companied by unfavorable reports from Washington regarding the spirits tax nnd from the east to thu effect that business was falling off. As a result the stock brulcc on heavy sales l'/i per cent before noon. During the afternoon the pressure to sell was less pronounced and the closing sale was at a recovery of % per cent , the de- cllno for the day being only % per cent. The announcement that the Chicago common council had granted a franchise to a new gas company brought out much gas stock nnd Induced short sales of the shares , caus ing a decline of 2U per cent , the bottom figure being reached In the late dealing , with n rally of % per cent , leaving n decline of 1 % per cent from yesterday. The gen eral market moved Irregularly during the day , closing weak , with prices pretty evenly divided above and below the cloilng of last night. Among the chief declines are : Pullman 114 per cent , Cottonseed Oil , Con solidated Gas , Lead and Minneapolis & St. Louis , common and preferred , each 1 per cent. The bond market was strong throughout the greater part of the day , but was a shade easier at the close. The Evening Post says : By far the most extraordinary fact In the history of this season's security prices has been their slight variation from a common level. It will be found , upon comparison , that tha average price ot the market's active stocks was almost the same at the opening of June as It was at the opening of May , and that the ruling level now Is substantially 'where it was In May. There were In fac hardly enough corn fed beeves In the yard ! to make n market. There was one biincl of pretty fair cattle , but the majority o what few steers there were In were no overly good. The demand was very Ugh on the part of both packers and shippers and no one appeared to be very nnxlou : to buy. At the same time what cattli sold brought strong prices , and In semi cases about lOc higher on the most de slrablc. Desirable cow stuff was scarce and soli at prices that would safely bo considered stronger than yesterday. The conimor stuff was about steady. There were quite a number of stacker ; and feeders In the yards , both fresh re colpts and holdovers , but the demand , as has been the case for some time past , wai light. The trade was slow and the numbcl of head changing hands small. The market kot did not show any material change as regards price. Representative sales : DRESSED HEEF. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. IT. No. Av.
