The market news was larccly bullish today and wheat advanced early , reacting later , but closed % c higher han on Saturday. Opening transactions were at V4c advance , and after Belling Up a fraction more eased off % c , changing some , and closed itcady. The iarly strength was attributed to the de- crcaeo on ocean passage , higher cables , the largo local shipments nnd dry weather ad- .vlces from the northwest. The weather map showed hot and dry conditions every- jvhcro except a few light showers In Mli- eourl. The large shipments here , 098,000 bu. , ere the heaviest slnco the opening of navi gation nnd had caulte n strengthening ten- ticncy. The closing English cables were gen erally easier , and continental cables were generally lower and helped to produce a , \veaker feeling nnd assisted In the later de cline. , Corn was firm within a % c range. The dry weather , cash demand and liberal de- crcaso In stocks caused the strength. OatR were unsettled , the range being % c. "Scarce offerings , higher prices for live liogs and buying by packers created a firm market In provl'lons. Sugar , which had been moving Ir- Irregularly , again came Into brisk demand on reports that the senate schedule had been agreed to eo far as It affects Sugar In conference with the house. The purchasing movement resulted In an advance to 102 , beliiK ft giln of 2 % per cent from the clos ing llgurcs of Saturday. A general Improve ment was In progress until 1:30 : o'clock , when the advance was checked by a selling move ment In Chicago Gas and Sugar , which sent the shares and one or two others down n fraction. A partial recovery followed , but by 2 o'clock the market was again moving downward , and before the decline was checked Sugar had reacted 1V4 per cent and the rest of the list U to 1 per cent , During the last fifteen minutes the trading as sumed a firmer tone , and the general list advanced n fraction , the market closing steady to firm , with prices In the main higher than Saturday's final sales. The rail way and miscellaneous bond market was strong on a limited volume of business. The Evening Post says : Aside from the obvious return of cheerful feeling In the railway centers , today's chief Impulse to market prices lay In the near approach of a tariff settlement. Taken as a whole , the market movement , though Irregular and not at all over confident , was visible. There was some selling to take profits shortly before the close , on which prices lost part of their early advance. This was , how ever , attended by crushing dullness. The Evening Post's London cable says : There was a general Improvement In stocks , led by American railroads and South Ameri can stocks. The very brisk buying was of the very best class , and provided the tariff bill does not encounter a hitch , a genuine rise has probably commenced. Prices fin ished at the best. There was hardly , enough cattle or hogs In the yards today to make any showing , nnil the contrast was very strong after the largo receipts of the past week. There were about 700 cattle and 1,700 hogs , as against 4,754 cattle and 4,219 hogs on Monday of lait week. It has been a long time since there were BO few cars of stock In the yards. The light receipts would seem to bo the natural outcome of the uneven and lower markets of the .past few days , which have made shippers a little cautions. CATTLE There were practically no beef steers among the fresh receipts of cattle and not many among the eight or ten loadi of holdovers that were on sale. There was not enough to tnako n market oven If the buyers wanted them , which they apparently did not. Only a few had sold , and they brought about steady prices. There were ten or n dozen loads of cows and mixed stuff on the market , and there was more trailing In this class of stock than there was In beef steers. The market , however , was without any Important feature , and the prices paid were about the same as those prevailing at the close of last week. The fresh receipts of stockcrs and feeders were light , but there were plenty In the yards. The demand was light , and the few loads tliat changed hand ? brought about Sat urday's prices. Cattle Market Continued Very Quiet , with IiirrctiXGil Strength. CHICAGO , July 1C. The cattle market con tinued very quiet , but It waa stronger than on the closing days of last wcelt , for choice grades at least. Although the fresh receipts were less than half as large ns the average Monday's sup ply , there were several thousand stale cattle In the yards , and that fact went against any ad vance. The uncertain status of the strike makci buyers timid , and the hand-to-mouth policy IM still being pursued. The general run of cattlu sold no better than at the close of last week. The arrivals since Saturday were about 7,000 head , and quite that many were In sellers' hands at that day's close. Sales of native COWH and steers were on a basis of from 11,25 to J3.50 for pour to rholce , and fiom 13.25 tn SI. 80 was the range of quotations for steers. Texas cattle Were quoted at anywhere from $1.23 to $ t , ac cording to quality. The fresh receipts were es timated at 1,500 head. Hog prices averaged a good round lOo higher than at Saturday's opening , They were not by any means In active demand , but the smnllness of the supply made It easy for sellers to closu out at an advance. As high ns J3.2) was pa'd ' for choice heavy , and there were sales of as sorted lights at $3.03. The supply was divided between packers and shippers nt from J4.75 to $5.05 for averages of less than 200 His. , and at from $4.50 to $5.20 for heavier weights. There was not much tiadlng below $4.90 , and sales at better than $3.10 were not numerous. Sheep business was lifeless and prices at from $1.25 to $3 for Inferior to extra sheep and at from $3 to $4.60 for spring lambs. Local slaughterers were the only buyers and their operations were on the most limited scale. Receipts : Cattle , 7,000 head : calves , 300 head ; hogs , 1C , 000 head ; sheep , 4,000 head. The apparent case with which the heavy armor plates were punctured In the tests at Indian Head during the last few days has been n disap pointment to Plttsburgers , who are proud of the big mill at Homstead , but the pro jectile used was also a product of home Industry and both conditions prevail. Pres ident C. I. Wheeler of the Sterling Iron company , manufacturers of the new pro jectile , says the armor plates were all right , but the fault lay In the Harvey process of hardening. He contends that the plates , to successfully withstand his projectile , must be made by the same process. He thinks ho has worked out a plan , nnd the Carnegie company Is now making some plates on the lines he has mapped out. They will be ready about the middle of August , when they will bo tested. The president frankly admits that If the test Is a success ho must Improve his projectiles nnd burst oven the now plate If he can. Instead of hardening the plates with carbon , as Is done tinder the Harvey process , and putting In nickel to toughen the material , Mr. Wheeler Is having a plate made on the principles used In producing the projectiles. Ho puts chromo or chromium In the pro jectiles , and tills material ho will substitute In the plate for nickel , and no carbon for hardening will be used. The chrome Is a very hard material and Is found extensively In this country nnd In Europe , particularly In Germany. There arc large deposits of It around Haltlmore. Mr. Wheeler thinks the fault of hardening plates , especially of the thickness of seventeen or eighteen Inches , Is that you cannot tell how far It penetrates. You may think the hardness goes Into the plato for some little distance , when It really may bo close to the surface. An Interesting Letter \\hlch .Speaks for I their. LOVEVILLE , St. Mary's Co. . United States and Pearson Companies Look ing Toward Amalgamation. NEW YOniC , July 1C. A morning paper says : The report that the United States Cordage company and the Pearson Cordage company are considering the question of uniting Interests Is confirmed here. Whether such a union will be finally consummated Is another matter. While the Massachu setts state reports show Mr. D. C. Clark of Boston to be the owner of the stock of the Pearson Cordage company , It Is said that Mr. C. II. McCormlck of Chicago really has the controlling Interest. The way the matter now stands Is that Mr. McCormlck Is said to have made propositions to the United States company , which the latter re fused to accept , and hence the consolida tion Is held .n abeyance pending the adjust ment of such terms that will bo mutually acceptable to all Interested parties. It Is further said that Mr. McCormlck has a con tract to take all of Pearson's output. At the office of John A. Good & Co. , GS Dread street , it was said that the question of uniting the two cordage concerns was known to cordage men to have been considered for some time. "Mr. McCormlck practically owns the Pear son Cordage company , " said the secretary of John Good & Co. , "and he wants so much In the proposed consolidation with the United States company that I doubt , unless he comes down In his terms , that an amalga mation of the two Interests will bo effected. Wo do not glvo ourselves' much concern about It. We are selling cordage and twine In our it dependent way , anil the trouble Is not to get orders , but to get the goods In time for delivery In the next two months.
