CHICAGO , July 12. Wheat early presented
ft fairly active appearance , but before the
close the Interest died out to a good extent.
Opening trades were at from V4c toio ad
vance , and gradually sold up % c , worked
t1 back Ic , changed some and closed Jo
net decline. The feeling was chiefly duo
Jl to northwestern news , there being some
talk In that section of drouth. The casli
business of yesterday no "doubt proved a
factor , as did the advance at New York and
reported rains In France. On the other
hand , cables were lower , the Price Current
news was very bearish and offers of cash wheat
wcro said to bo Increasing In the country.
The advance seemed to exhaust the Im
mediate supply of anxious shorts , and a
good reaction occurred.
Corn was quiet , but well supported In
prices , the close showing a gain of % c to
% c. About all the corn hero Is held by
one Individual , and shorts are not a little
concerned , and are disposed to cover. Of
ferings of July are very moderate and de
mand at times was quite urgent , but there
was a liberal trade In oats and an Irregular
movement In prices. July was weak on In
creased offerings , with a limited supply , and
prices declined V4c from the top , but re
acted % c , anil closed with a loss of Ic.
Oats wcro steady and advanced from * &c
to % c , with light offerings and belter buyIng -
Ing , but the advance did not hold. Prices
closed steady at Vc lower than yesterday.
The prospective renewal of railroad trafllc
had rather a weakening effect upon the pro
vision market. The market opened firm , but
became rather weak , and In the end was 7c
lower than for September , . 2'/4c for lard
anil 7'/4c lower for ribs.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
40 cars ; corn , 91 cars ; oats , 45 cars ; hogs ,
12,000 head.

The , market on country produce was without

remained about steady.
While there Is about the usual amount of prod

little shipping going on and that limits the
business to the local trade almost entirely.
With an Increasing supply of hay and light

MINNKAPOLIK , July 12. The wheat market
was early advanced today and pushed up about
Ic , cr.nsed by unfavorable weather' reports from
abroad and higher cables. There was talk , too ,
th.it more or less damage had resulted to the
spring whip.t crop In the northwest from the hot
winds of yesterday , but later cables were easy ,
and as the shorts had covered eatly In the day
thcro wan no other Important demand and prices
settled off , nnd as thu maiket began to go down
there was a disposition on the part of many
traders to pell short , which weakened the market
further , and the close averaged no higher than
the day before. July waa a fraction higher , Sep
tember was n shade up , but December was Kc
lower , nnd track wheat the same as on the
preceding day.
Kecclpts were small nt terminal points , and
there waa very little moving In the country.
Still if the railroads had been In shape tn haul
In wheat more would have been here , nnd there
would have been some shipments. Arrivals were
21.7CO lin. Mills were running nt n little larger
capacity than ycsti rday and reduced the local
supply about 30K)0 ) bu. for the twenty-four hours.
The market closed : July , GS'Hc ' ; September , CC %
50ic ! ; December , 6S'c. ( , On track : No. 1 hard ,
CI'Jc ; No. 1 not them , COVic ; No. 2 northern ,
5Sic , There was n fair amount of business
transacted by room traders , nnd Rome orders
were received from outside , but there was not
enough of the latter to change the general drift
of the market as affected by local operations.
The Hour market was steady at { 3.3503.40 for
patents and $2.0302.33 for bakers. Shipments were
12.793 bbls.

Loss of I'litriimiKo I'orcd.s aVnll Street
Firm to CI s UK Doors.
NEW YOUK , July 12. Just before the
close of business on the Stock exchange the
failure of Ji. D. Alexander & Co. was an
nounced from the rostrum. In view of the
fact that tliu. flrm had no standing obliga
tions on the board , It caused no excitement
and Is of no Importance from a speculative
poult of view , save that the suspension Is
dno to the general depression that has ex
isted In Wall street
for more than a year
past. Alexander & Co. did a strictly com
mission business , dealing mainly In bonds ,
nnd they have pracllcady rusled out. The
commission business of Wall street has fallen
off BO that many of the firms nro merely
dragging along , paying olllco rent and clerk
hire , awaiting better times. The llrm which
failed today admit that they have done little
or no buslncs for twelve months or moro.
and declare they were tired of paying out
money without receiving any return. Com
mission house ! ! have been complaining of the
ab&enco of customers for a long time. The
only firms which have been doing business
nro those who operate for cliques In the
Industrials and those railway stocks In
which pools have been formed to bull or
bear the shares. This Is the first Stock ex
change firm which , during the present period
of speculative inactivity , has given up the
light by reason of loss of business.
Today's market was dull and without
special feature. Sugar furnished half the
total transactions , fluctuating within 2 per
cent. Opening ! ' / & per cent higher at 99 , the
stock was sold heavily , bringing out some
largo blocks and causing a break of 2 per
cent to 97 by 10:30 : , rallying to 98 % , out
closing at 9SH. making a loss on the day
of 1 ? ; iwr cent. Sugar preferred , on pur
chases of 200 shares , rose 2 per cent. The
Celling movement In Sugar common was
nominally based on the action of the Massa
chusetts supreme court enjoining the Amer
ican Sugar Itellnlng company from manufac
turing sugar In that state by reason of Its
y failure to comply with the state law requir
ing foreign corporations to make an annual
report , which must bo filed with the state
olllclals. Insiders wcro reiorted | to be buy
ers of the stock at the decline and It Is
claimed the company does not regard the
action of the court as Important so far as It
affects Its business ,
There waa London lelllug of St. Paul at
the opening nnd locnl trader * also sold the
shares on reports of a ftrlke on the road ,
which wan mibucqnently denied. An early
decline of 4 per cent was effected , with ft
subsequent recovery of % per cent nnd final
reaction of H per cent. Denver & lllo Grande
nnd United States Leather arc each up 1 ,4 per
cent , Kansas & Texas 1 per cent. The other
changes arc fractional ,
The bond market was firm to strong on n
limited volume of business.
The livening Post's London cable says :
The weekly b.ink returns shows coin and
bullion 3StOG,3l7 ; , n decrease for the week
of 1,39.1,010 , owing to the draft money for
dlvldeniU nnd holiday requirements Into the
provinces. The movements during the week
were 82,000 from Australia , 8,000 from
llombay , 0,000 from Lisbon , 10,000 of United
States coin bought , while 39,000 were ex
ported to Spain and Sweden. The settle
ment was concluded satisfactorily today. One
small failure may result , but nothing else
In expected. The stock markets wcro steady
today. Americans opened firm , but became
Hat and closed flrm again. Rupee paper has
given way on rumors of the speedy conver
sion of the isr > l-r 5 loan. This Is quite pre
mature. The difficulty announced In the flrm
of Hrncst & Mlsen , Indian merchants , an
old established house , caused n falling In
Indigo nnd Jute. Their liabilities are not
known.
The Bvcnlng Post says : Changes In prices
throughout today's transactions were very
few nnd the general price level was hardly
altered. Now , as before the outbreak In the
west , the tendency Is manifest to' nwnlt final
notion nt Washington and to wait nlso for the
trade revival which Wall street at all events
believes n tariff settlement will bring.

- T1IUUSDAY , July 12.
(
There was n great change In the matter
of receipts ns 'compared with yesterday.
Only 100 cattle were received , as against
2,15.1 yesterday Thus ( ar this week there
have been received at these yards 13,700
cattle , which Is a gain of over 8,000 , as
compared with the same period last week.
The receipts of hogs today footed up 5,800 , as
against 10,800 yesterday. Tlrtis far this
week 37,600 hogs have been received.
CATTLE While the fresh receipts of cat
tle were very light , there were enough held
over to bring the total offerings up to from
3,000 to 3,500 , so that there was no scarcity.
The market did not show any very great
change In any particular. The handy fat
cattle that were In the best request among
the buyers brought strong yesterday's prices ,
and were pretty well cleaned up before the
close. The heavy cattle were not In quite
so good request , and holders of such did
not find It such easy work to unload. The
market as a whole was rather slow. The
reports from Chicago to the effect that the
butchers were going out on a strike served
to make the situation a little more unfavor
able. Neither packers nor shippers seemed
very nn.xluus to buy.
The market on butchers' stock was steady
at about yesterday's prices , and was without
Important feature.
Stockers and feeders were steady , but as
has been the rule of late , the trading was
slow , and the sales were rather small. Rep
resentative sales :

HOGS In addition -to the fresh receipts
of hogs there wer.e a''good ' many holdover' ,
making the total offerings between 8,000 and
9,000. The market opened active , with a
good shipping" deySaiyd/-and'the trade was
quite lively untlftlie close. As to prices
there was an advance of about 20c , the bulk
of the sales being made at from $ -1.95 to $5 ,
as against $4.75 to $1.80 yesterday. Repre
sentative sales :

A bright and entertaining novel of New
York society life , told with much liveliness
and some quiet satire Is "Struthcrs , " by
Anna llowman Dodd , The story portrays
the ambitions of a wealthy Now Yorker ,
John Struthers , who , with his young wife ,
aspires to enter the select circle of the
metropolitan Four Hundred. Under the
same cpver appears also another story , "Tho
Comedy of the Masked Musicians. " Paper ,
312 pages , 50 cents. Lovell , Coryell & Com
pany , 310-318 Sixth avenue , Now York.
A military story entitled , "Captain Close , "
by Captain Charles King , opens the July
Llpplncott's. It deals with the reconstruc
tion period and relates the experiences of a
newly-fledged lieutenant In camp near Tuga-
lee , and of his very curious commanding
ofllcer. Loulso Stockton begins a strong
story , "A Mess of I'ottngo , " to be concluded
In the August number. "A Case of Hoodo , "
Is nn amusing dialect sketch from a Virginia
police court. J. U. Llpplncott Company ,
Philadelphia.
A highly exciting and warmly colored ro
mance , almost turbulent with action , Is "A
Flower of France , " by Marah 15111s Hyan.
The story dates back to a period a century
ago , during the Spanish occupation of Now
Orleans , a period rich In material and char
acters of a romantic and picturesque order.
The plot is Intricate , without being compli
cated , and the outcome remains n tantaliz
ing uncertainty until the end Is reached.
