H w.n found that the volume - umo at Great Kails measured 1,796 cubic feet per second , while at Fort Dcntoii , twenty- flvo miles further down the river , the vol ume Was hut 4,331 cubic feet , a decrease of 455 cubic fuel. Directly below the upper cataract on the south bank ot the river , about half way between the towns. Is a larga pool , In which If frequent visitors to the place can bo be lieved , are to be found eyeless llsli ot the species snld to Inhabit subterranean water courses. In all probability the outlet , If one exists , Is located at this point , the al leged presence of these fish tending to cor roborate the theory. Krom here. If this sur mise Is correct , U would appear that an un derground channel running In a southeast erly direction carries the water Into a basin underlying a large area of South Dakota , thus forming a huge subterranean lake , which has recently been tupped by the nu merous nrtoslan wells. Another queer dis covery Is noted In connection with the sur vey Just completed. In 1878 observations were taken in a slnillar manner , anil , unless errors In calculations have been made , since that yea there has been a decrease of fully 20 per cent In the volume of water In HIP river.
