TUESDAY , July 3.
In the matter of ricelpts the market wns
little bolter off than It was on Monday , there
being more hogs , hut fewer cattle.
With only 800 fresh receipts of cattle
thcro was very little upon which to base
a market. Local packers , however , wanted
a few good beeves , nnd the market on such
took nn upward turn of fully from lOc to
15c. One hunch of choice 1,500-lb. beeves
brought $1.75.
The market situation , owing to the rail
road strikes , Is very uncertain. Reports
from Chicago Indicate that the dressed beef
men were unable to get their meat trains
_ out nml that will leave a large demand un-
'Batlsncil. Up to the present lime the pack
ers here can get their product east by going
around Chicago.
A light supply and good demand made an
active nml stronger market on everything
desirable In the line of butchers' stock.
Stockcrs and feeders wcro rather quiet.
There were no buyers In from the country
and speculators had ns many ns they cared
to carry over the holiday. The market wns
easier , Representative sales :

HOGS The receipts of hogs , while double
Monday's run , were still very light for a
Tuesday , there being only 4,000 fresh ar
rivals. On Tuesday of last week the receipts
were 12,000. The market opened very slow
nnd dull. Eastern buyers were ruled oMt
by the railroad strikes and local buyers
took advantage of the situation to bear the
market. The early sales were about lOc
lower , but the market finally settled down
at a Co to lOc decline. Tlio hogs were all
sold In good season. Representative sales :

Hill there wns ; a tone of firmness to the mar
ket which was rcmarkablr In view of the
fctrlUc situation , which as yet shows no sign
of Improvement. There seems to be no de-
slro on the part of holders of shares of rail
ways affected by the strike to sacrifice them
and under the circumstances It Is remark
able with what firmness the grangers and
trunk lines are held. Wall street appears to
look upon the defeat of tlin strikers as a
certainty by reason of the lack of justice
of their cause.
The London market reflected the confi
dence of foreign holders In the stability
of values and there was good foreign buyIng -
Ing In this market of St. Paul , Atchlson ,
Louisville & Nashville , Union 1'aclflc and
small purchases were made of some other
arbitrage shares. The vote by which the
sugar schedule went through did not Im
prove the price of the Sugar stock per
manently , although the shares opened % per
cent higher. A selling movement was In
augurated In the early dealings , based on the
adoption of the nnundmcnt putting the sched
ule Into effect on the passage of the tariff
bill , which Is looked upon as unfavorable
to the American Sugar Refining company.
A decline of 114 per cent was recorded In
the morning , with a rally during the after
noon of 1 % per cent , and n final reaction
of 16 per cent , making a loss on the day
of't per cent.
The market was firm In the late dealings
and closed In fairly good tone. The rail
way and miscellaneous bond market was
generally firm all day.
The Evening Post's London cable says :
The stock market was very dull today , the
only feature being a slight reaction In
Americans on the attitude of the president
toward the strikers. The Improvement was
maintained to the close. France Is taking a
moderate amount of gold from here.
The following are the closing quotations
on the leading stocks of the New York ex

The week hits been hot nnd dry , but the
Kcnernl rains Immediately preceding had
left Ihe ground in excellent condition and
all' crops have nuule very satisfactory
growth.
l.lfjht rains of n half Inch or less pre
vailed over the state Rftierally , except
In the central and southcnHtern section ,
where none fell until Monday nliht nnd
Tuesday mornlnfr , but ns we KO to press
llBht rains prevail over the stale Benerally.
In Ihe exlreme northweslern and north
eastern counties nearly nn Inch fell during
the week.
There hns boon more than the normal
ninount oC sunshine nnd In some few locali
ties hot south winds huve caused Ihe corn
leaves lo curl somewhat.
Small grain continues lo show general Im
provement. Wheat harvest Is well nd-
vnnced In Ihe southeast section. The straw-
Is short , In some cases even too short to
bind , and the yield will be- light , but the
grain generally Is of good quality. Over
most of the western part of the state the
nnnll grain will be nearly a total failure.
Chinch bugs are becoming very numqrous
and are beginning to attack corn. The
corn everywhere Is In excellent condition.
It has made a remarkable growth during
the week and is now farther advanced than
usual at this season. Much of It hns been
cultivated for the last time.
Tame hay Is a light crop , but wild hay is
Improving and pastures are everywhere In
good condition. There has been a large
acreage of millet sown which Is coming up
nicely.

The Usual noise accompanying the approach
preach of the Fourth of July has already
had a little tribute of blood paid to It.
At South Omaha last evening Edward
dates , assistant cashier ot the Packers Na
tional bank , rooming In the Plvonka block ,
undertook , Just before retiring , to shoot off
a cannon cracker , and the result was that
the accident just a year ago , In which
"Spurt" Farrlsh lost his right nrm , was
duplicated. Gates held the cracker a little
too long , and It exploded In his grasp. Ills
right hand was torn to pieces and the doc
tors say that amputation at the wrist will
be necessary.
Omaha also was not without Its customary
accident. About 10 o'clock last night some
one stepped to the curbing In front of the
shooting gallery on the north side of Douglas
street near Fourteenth and proceeded to
empty a revolver on to Iho pavement. The
bullets glanced upward on striking the pave
ment and two of them lodged in Morris
Urodkty's back nml the third btruck Oscar
Green In the left leg just below the knee
cap. Inflicting painful wounds. Two other
bullets struck the glass In the Diamond sa
loon , shattering the expensive panes.
It Is not known who fired the shots , but
Caul Corbett , who was standing near the
shooting gallery , said ho saw an old man
step to the edge of the sidewalk and flro
five shots. The description answered that
of the man who runs the gallery , but when
the police went to look for the fellow he
had disappeared. The ofllcers have been In
structed to arrest him on sight.
Urodkoy Is a brother of the man running
the pawnshop juat west of the Diamond
saloon , and In company with Green and
several other persons , was standing out In
front. As soon as the- shots were fired he
remarked that some one lilt him twice , but on
examination It was found that there were
bullet holes In lit ? coat und that ho was
bleeding. With the sound of the last shot
Oscar Green , a boy 14 years old , staggered
back and said that he was slut.
The wounded persons were taken Into the
store and Dr. Lee summoned. The doctor
extracted the bullets and found that Drodkey
had two flesh wounds , one near the right
Moulder , and the other near the small of the
back. The bullets , which had evidently
spent their force , were easily cut out. Green
was struck on the shin and the bullet was
flattened cut against the bone : He was re
moved to his home , at 1310 Jackson street ,
and Urodkcy was taken into his brother's
house. None of the wounds are serious.
The police were ordered to arrest every
man found shooting loaded firearms there-
afler. Nearly everyone who uses a re
volver to celebrate with shoots blank car
tridges , but some persons are known to
shoot balled cartridges with a dangerous
careles ncsu.
John Avert , a hackman , started In to cele
brate about midnight by firing a loaded re
volver off near Fifteenth and Farnam streets
and caused a hack team to run away. Officer
Moran placed him under arrest for discharg
ing firearms within the city limits.
