CHICAGO , Juno 19. Liberal selling gave
ivlieat a lc tumble today nnd July closed
Io lower than yesterday , despite a goodly
supply of bullish news. July corn closed ' c
lower , July oata > c higher and provisions
lower all around.
The opening of wheat was wild nnd un
settled , with first trades at from % o tofcc
decline , but sold off Instantly at from % c
to le , nnd many selling orders could not
bo cxcquted until a considerable decline had
occurred. The price milled from \&c \ to Vic ,
cased off from ' /ic to ftc , advanced % c , broke
% c , changed some nnd closed near the bet
tom. There wa > free selling at the start by
all classes of traders , the largo comtnlssslon
houses all having selling orders , and the
elevator Interests also disposed of large
quantities , an did I'ardrldgc , who has not
traded extensively of late The market was
largely "long" and not In shape for liquida
tion , and the decline was sudden and In
Jumps of from % o to4c. . Forelgns were
said to have led the selling and New York
opened weak and led In the decline as much
ns It did In the advance of yesterday. Out-
sldo news was bullish , and under ordinary
circumstances the market should have ad
vanced. Cables were firmer , the first Liver
pool advices quoting spot strong nnd 2d
higher nnd futures from la to H4d up. The
Baltic shipments were much smaller and
the Mark Lane Kxpress was rather bullish
and favorable to holders. Foreign advances
did not speak of any damage abroad from
snow or frost , a little damage being reported
In Austria by the floods. The market was
governed entirely by local Influences.
Corn was less active , within from % C to
% o range. The market declined early on
free offerings , but reacted on good demand ,
closing steady.
Oats were stronger on good buying. The
range for July was % c.
Provisions were very dull and easy on
liberal live hog receipts and the break In
wheat.
Compared with last night , September pork
Is V'/fcc lower , September lard lOc lower and
September ribs Gc lower.
Vessel business slow at le for corn to
Buffalo.

The market na a whole did not show much
change. Butter la about steady , eggs weaker

It has been openly charged by butter men that
during the cold weather the retail merchants of
the city sell buttcrlne for butter. If so Omaha
docs not appear to bo the only violator of the

1SSG. as to the sale of oleomargarine Is being
violated by dealers In all parts of the country.
These violations consist principally In selling
oleomargarine at retail In packages not propcily
marked and branded , und In offering It for sale
after It had been removed from the original
stamped packages. Steps arc being taken by
the olllclals to punish every violation of this
act that they nuy discover.

STOCKS AND IIONUS.
Action nf Now York Hauliers .Insplrca Con
fidence Among Speculators.
NEW YOUK , June 10. The action taken
by tlio Now York City banks tills alternoon
In deciding to furnish gold ( or export as It
may be rweUcd. without recourse to the
United States treasury , will undoubtedly
Itavo a beneficial effect upon tlio Stock exchange -
change markets. It will , however , bo largely
a sentimental Influence , for the fact Is , the
gold export business haa about reached an
em ] , and any further drain upon the treas
ury , had the banks continued to hoard spe
cie , would necessarily have been light. It
Is probable today's action was bas l upon the.
conclusion that tlie banks would not be called
upon for gold to any large amount. Uut
perhaps the moot potent rcanon for this re
versal ot policy Is the ( car the country at
largo would look with disfavor upon the
spectacle of the heaping up of an unneces
sary large gold reserve In the metropolitan
banks while the United States treasury sur
plus was being depleted and had reached an
unusually low point. But whatever the mo
tive , the decision of the banks to supply
gold needed ( or the Immediate ) future wll
undoubtedly have the effect of Inspiring con *
flilenco In speculative values , and Is likely
fj be reflected In an Increase o ( activity on
the Sioc'ii oxclinnge. There Is need of some
thing to put life frt the "hare market. Yester
day was dull , today was u1. ! ' , and lije trading
heavier. The market opened quiet and fairly
steady , but Union Pacific was % per cent
and Sugar Vt per cent lower. In the early
dealings a better tone prevailed , Sugar sell
ing up % per cent , Chicago Gas % per
cent , and come other shares a smaller frac
tion.
tion.Tho Improvement was not , however , last
ing , and under a Blight pressure to sell , prices
took n downward turn. Northern Pacific
preferred declined 1 4 per cent , nnd Oregon
Short Line nnd other shares UG1'/ ! Per cent.
An attack was made on Union Pacific by the
bear traders In the hope of bringing out the
long stock , nnd they were partly successful ,
for the shares broke from 12& at the close
yesterday to 9 % , with only a rally of % per
cent at the close , making a loss of 2 % per
cent on the day. Humors were put In cir
culation that there would be a heavy stock
assessment under the reorganization plan
nnd that the United States government would
force the payment of Its debt. Very little
was done In the general list between 11 ami
12:30 : o'clock , and values changed slightly
during that period , but ns the afternoon ad
vanced the speculation became depressed.
Distilling receded 1 % per cent ; Erie , 1 % per
cent ; Pullman , 1 per cent , and the rest of the
list a ( ractlon. About 2 o'clock a still further
decline was reached of 1 % per cent In
United States cordage , and ( rom % per cent
down In other shares. A slight rally fol
lowed on the covering of short contracts
nnd the market closed steady. The bond
market was steady In the morning , but became -
came heavy In the afternoon and closed
weak.

A ' I TUESDAY , Juno 19.
Receipts so far this week , compared with
supplies for the first two days of last week ,
show a falling oft of 2,800 cattle , 1,800 hogs
nnd 800 sheep.
The run of cattle was not much over half
as heavy as on last Tuesday , but the quality
as a rule was very fair. There was not a
particularly bullish tone to eastern advices ,
but the demand for shipping nnd speculative
account was good , while only one of the
local dressed beef men , Cudahy , was a free
buyer. There were too few cattle here Mon
day to make a market , and In consequence
comparisons all differ. Some of the better
grades , on which competition was best , sold
lOc to IBc better than Saturday , and for the
average of dry lot steers prices averaged
pretty close to a dime higher. There were
a few bunches of half fat and grassy stock on
sale at prices not a whit better than pre
vailed at the close of last week. The In
difference of local slaughterers In the face of
the light receipts created a very weak feel
ing , and the general market closed up dull ,
with the advance about all lost.
The limited offerings of cow stuff Included
a few very choice loads. These sold at good
strong prices , but the ordinary run of butch
ers' and canners' stock was slow nnd weak.
Calves were In good supply , slack demand
and lower , nnd the market for rough stock
was generally unchanged.
In stockers and feeders trade was lively
and prices generally about a dlmo higher
than the close of last week. General rains
throughout the country brought a liberal
number of country buyers and many more
cattle would have found ready purchasers at
the advance. A fair number of cattle
changed hands as It was , nnd largely at
from | 2.80 to ? 3.30. Good to choice feeders
are quotable at from ? 3 to $3.60 , fair to
good nt J2.G5 to | 2.90 and common to poor
at from $2.50 down. Representative sales :

HOGS Receipts -were not exceptionally
heavy , being 1,000 head lighter than a week
ago. There was a further stiffening of
values under the Influence of continued fa
vorable reports from the cast , and good
local and outside buying orders. On the
early market , with everybody buying , prices
ruled from 6c to lOo higher than Monday ,
fair to choice heavy and butcher weight
grades selling at from $4.70 to $4.80 , with
good to poor light and light mixed stuff at
from $4.75 down to $4.50. Early trading
was tolerably active , but the market rather
weakened aa the morning advanced , and
closed weak , very little better than Mon
day. Several loads were still unsold at the
close. The bulk of the sales were at $4.70
and $4.75 , as against $4.CO to $4.70 Monday
and $4.CO to $4.C5 on'last Tuesday. Repre

Concerning Thompson's Ghost.
OMAHA , June 19. To the Editor of The
Bee : In Monday morning' * ) Uee appears a
somewhat sensational ghost Btory with ref
erence to the house situated nt 2112 UougliiH
street. I am not Interested In the ghost ,
jut um In certain statements contained. In
the closing chapter of the Btory.
It Is true that this property wns owned by
Father Ryan In his lifetime. It IB riot
rue that ho bequeathed It to Ills Mister ,
Mrs. I-nmb ; It Is not trilo that Bishop
Scnnnell got hold of the property to the
exclusion of Mrs. Lamb ; It la not true that
the bishop rented the house as soon us he
could ; tt Is not true that Mm. l.nmb'H coun
sel told her to move Into the house ns
soon ns bhe could ; It Is not true thut MIH.
Lumb got ready to move her belongings
nto the house , but dlHcoveied that the
jlahoii had rented It to some one else ; It
B not true that Mrs. Lrfiml ) ) WH wince been
endeavoring to get possession ; It la not
true -that Mrs. iJimb may be able to ac
count for the recent strange occuirenccs ,
but if Mr. Thompson Is seeking for a. re-
luctlon In rent , It Is quite probable that
10 can account for these occurrences.
The fact Is that the will of Father Ilynn
provided a Hpecilic legacy of $8,000 In favor
if Mrs. Lamb and gave the balance of his
property to the bishop. No controversy
vlmtever has arisen between Mrs. Liimb
und the bishop , nnd neither of them IIUH
iiul possession or Houglit possession of
ho premises In question , lioth are repre
sented bv the Biime counsel. In no far UH
hey have any Interest In the estate of
atlier Hyan , but no conflict IIUH arlHcti
or can arise between tlu-ni. Certain heirs
of Father Hyan are contesting his will ,
ind iwndlng the contest the court has un
tainted Mr. John Hush special mlniliilHtrn.
or of the estate , for the purpose of caring
or the property until executors may be
appointed. Mr. Hush alone has had pos-
esslon of the property under authority of
lie court anil IUIH runted It , and neither
, trH. Lamb nor the bishop have made any
question on Mr. Itush'x right to take charge
of the property and to rent It pending set-
lement of the estate. , , . , .
I trust you will kindly publish this cor
rection and do Justice to all parties con
