WORKED BY AN OLD TRICK Missouri Partner Oonfldoncod Out of Pivo Thousand Dollars , LOCATED BY OFFICERS IN NEBRASKA IIoi Containing the Money CliiiiiRril on the tlrungor ut tlio Proper Moiurnt mill tlio llooty Secured l > y the Crooks. LINCOLN , Juno IS. ( Special lo The Hoc. ) Deputy Sheriff Hughes of Hopkins , Mo. , Is In the city today In search of three of the smoothest confidence men who have worked In the west for some time. The names of the smooth people r.re not knoun , but their victim was Henrlk Ilolker , a well-to-do farmer living near the toun of Hopkins. From a son of Mr. Ilolker , who accompanies the deputy sheriff , the following particulars of the manner In which the strangers secured $5,000 In gold were obtained : Henry Ilolker owns COO acres of Improved land and has for some time desired to sell nnd retire from active work. Last Tuesday ho was visited by three men , who repre sented themselves as western men In search of a farm. They were shown all over the COO acres and were loud In their flattering comments upon the richness of the soli and the extent of the Improvements , Finally , after bargaining for two or three days , the three strangers agreed to take the farm at $40 per acre , the whole price to be paid In cash. After tlio deal had been agreed upon they expressed considerable fear that the farmer would back out and refuse to give a deed when they presented the cash. They slated that they would not have the money , which was to bo sent to them from a sister In Cali fornia , for several days. The old man was certain that he would give the deed when the money was turned over. The three con fidence men then proposed that they would de posit $10,000 In a strong box and the farmer should deposit $5,000 , both as a guarantee of good /alth. To convince the fanner that they meant to do no wrong they agreed that he should retain all the money In his possession. The old man agreed. The strangers secured a two-scaled rig at Hopkins and drove out to the farmer's house. He returned to town and went to the bank and borrowed $4,700 , part of the amount from the bank and the balance from a merchant. The odd $300 he had with him. The strangers furnished the box and the farmer put In his $5,000 and the three men a bundle of what seemed to bo bank notes. Then they all started for the farm , Where the old man was to retain the box with the $15,000. On the way back they met a friend who was very drunk so drunk that they feared the man would meet some disaster If left alone. They asked the farmer If ho would take the box nnd go on homo afoot while they took their friend back to town. The farmer would and did. That was the last he ever saw of the three strangers and gradually It dawned upon him that he had been swindled. He broke open the strong box and found that his money had changed Into dross. There were three chips In the box and that was nil. The strangers had two boxes , and while In the buggy had ex changed them. The case was put In the hands of the deputy sheriff and with young Holkcr the pursuit was taken Up. The three men were followed to Nebraska City and then to Lin coln. Last Friday they fed their team at Raw lings' barn and the next morning dis appeared. Sheriff Hughes this forenoon sent a description of the men to officers In all parts of Nebraska , and It Is believed that they will finally be captured. ASKS FOR A DIVORCE.
