Shannon wan n well known character In the sporting world. Ho was born In Maryland , his father being a natlvo ot Washington , I ) . C. As early as 1823 the latter moved to St. Louis , The son was placed In school In Georgetown , D. C. , but soon left ot his on n accord and returned homo convinced ho had not been suffi ciently advanced for the Georgetown Insti tution. There wcro no railroads then. Ily "tooting It" and coaches ho reached the headwaters ot the Ohio. The sntno morning the boy lett tor the west his father started I for the cast. The boy rcaached homo In tlino to welcome his father back. Soon the boy foil In with fast youngsters , nml ulti mately began a fust though honest life , nt different times acting ns newspaper reporter , "boy orator , " speculator , detective , nnd In other pursuits , Including thnt ot gambler. Mr. Shannon had many adventures , ono of which was described by himself as follows : "Shannon , for heaven's sake , help mo In the keenest clmsa I'vo had In thirty years' detective service ! " Thus I was addressed ono summer afttr- iioon In that llvo young metropolis of the west , Kansas City , by Henry lllack , an old acquaintance , one of the cutest of a corps of detectives , \\linso achievements In ferreting out rogues along the Mississippi ami Mis souri had become proverbial. I never was a great admirer of that kind of employment requiring the skill ot the. dotccllvo or the duplicity of a spy , and thin man knew ( t. Ills addressing mo thus evidenced his dlro extremity. "You needn't llo nor use nny kind of de- celt. Just help mo get on the trail of n bloody villain that I'vo been after for 11 month and can't catch a smell of him , " ho said , In answer to my look of disgust on hearing his proposition. "Who , and whut Is It you want ? I nsked. "You know Jake Heberly ? " "Tho gambler ? " "Tho same. ' "Well , I ought to know him. Ho Is tbo best card player on the rivers. What do you want with him ? " "Forgery , murder and sloped. Ho forged a draft In New Orleans , drew $ . > ,000 on It , and was nabbed , but ho escaped from his captor nnd ran for refuge In u celebrated bagnio In that city. Ho was too closely fol lowed to hldo away. A police ofllcor fol lowed him Into the room , when Jake threat ened to shoot If the ofllccr came another step nearer. Sounding his whistle for assist ance he sprang for Jake , when the devil shot him square through the head. "Knowing pursuers would como from be low , ho ran upstairs , climbed the ladder o the transom , out on to the roof , drew the ladder after him , leaving no chance to fol low , nnd cut out along the roofs , keeping on the yard sldo out ot sight of the street , and finally disappeared Into the skylight of some ono of the buildings and that's the last's been seen of him or the money. " "Tho shrewd little rabcal ! " Tlut he's a nervy chap , and you'll have fun , even If you over catch up with him. " Which was the only consolation I could offer , for I knew the fellow well , and had seen his llttlo body In tight places before. Jake Heberly was one of the best known and most successful gamblers that over Infested the west. He was a natlvo ot Louisville , Ky. , but ran away In , boyhood , and had spent the last thirty years of his life In St. Louis and following the rivers. Nature had glvon him talents of no ordinary cali ber , but tlio only Improvement they had re ceived , beyond a session or two at com mercial college , was the education received in gambleis' dens , brothels and other simi lar resorts. Ho had a natural list for a pen , and excelled In chlrography. After spending a few years among gamblers Jake "reformed" and secured a situation In n largo commercial house In St. Louis to familiarize himself with business men and their habits , documents , etc. Ho remained In that employment , two or three years , meantime keeping up his gambling ac quaintance and education In secret , when ho returned to the "pavo" and became n no torious gambler ; ho was also smirched with several charges of forgery and other crlnfes , but somehow had never been convicted. However , his picture was In every "logues1 gallery" In western offlces. And a handsome picture It was. Fair and almost beautiful as a woman , a face as smooth as the palm ot your hand , rather a bright ollvo complexion , nearly ns dark as a Creole , red lips , a slight aquallne nose , splen did teeth , with raven black hair ( which ho gloried In ) , permitted to grow long and hang over his shoulders In glossy wavelets. Ills form was faultless for a female , but too effeminate to bo that of an Apollo ; his eye perfect and black and sparkling as a mid night star. Added to all , ho had the temper of a demon , quick as llghtulng ; fear ho was totally unacquainted \\lth , and had perfect control of his feelings nnd features. "Henry my boy , you are after dangerous prey , nnd I apvlse you to keep your eyes on duty and your pistols ready. If ho gets the drop on you , there'll bo ono flno detective less. " "Never fear tor me. Dut will you help me ? " "To do what ? " "Do ? Lota. He's a gambler and you know his haunts. He'll never bo on guard against one of your clan , and you can much more probably fall In with him. He's wanted In Nashville , in Memphis , and In St. Louis also for forgery. Altogether It's a cool $2,500 If wo catch the eel , besides my glory. If you'll tree him , I'll do the catching , and we'll divide , what say you ? " "Whero do you expect mo to find him ? " I asked , getting interested , as $1,250 loomed up In the distance. "On the river , or in some of the river towns , gambling on his fresh stake , " Black gave as his opinion. "Well , you'ro badly oft trail. You'll never find him thero. I'm a better detective than even Harry Black this time. You'll have to travel , this hunt , and you needn't scrutinize breeches very closely cither , " I prognosti cated. "What ? By George ! you have struck It. Will you Join me ? I'll pay expenses. " "Well , yes , ns It's only hunting where you are to do the dirty work , and there's ad venture In It. I'll go , If you'll lot mo do ac cording to my own notion , and you pay trav eling expenses. " "Agreed. Whoro'll you go first ? " "Don't know yet. Wo will telegraph each other every twenty-four hours , BO as to keep In sight , like. When I telegraph you to come , you como at once. " "Agreed ugaln. Now , I must see Chief Speers the first thing , and put his boys on the Kansas City hunt. " "Very well ; but that Is useless. Go east , young man , BO east. " Hack In my room I cogitated my first "case ; " Jake Ileberly now has , that wo know of , it "stake" of 1,1,000 , hence will hunt big game In same quarter where ho will least bo hunted for some watering place Just now , where the "big onea" are summer ing. Not to Kuropo ? No ; not cosmopollto enough Saratoga , Capo May or the like. How ? Gambler , resting as merchant ; one or the other Is his education , both together his stronghold. Maybe westward ? No , too well known by every detective and police. Hero goes for Saratoga , first train , for he's a month ahead. So I shot oft post haste for the east. At Saratoga and half a dozen minor places I failed to find Jake , or any trace of hU having been at any of them. The only "success" at Saratoga , I learned win n beautiful crcole widow , who was the very devil at faro or poker , and had played havoc with hearts and purses among the tony gentlemen frequenting the gaming rooms at that favorite resort. She had gone to Capo May with her aunt on aged but very aristo cratic duenna , who clmpeioncd the young crcole widow very closely for fear BO mo adventurer might run away with her. The couple had been followed by a rich , young milord from England , who had fallen dead in love with the pretty brunette , and whoso attentions received the only flattering re ception fiom the Jealous old duennu. Crcolo long , black , wavy hair , killing eyes poker , faro ! I scented a cold trail , The fashionable world will remember , some seasons luck , the rich and beautiful young creole widow , with her guardian aunt so very distingue , who made the rounds of watering places ono summer , and took back to her sunny southern plantation n hundred hearts nnd hundreds ot dollars with each , Well , dear deluded , she never went back to nny sunny plantation , but Is today recre ating In a much shadier nook , with better guardians than her ancient "aunt. " Hurrying to Cape May , 1 spent several hours searching quietly though the differ ent hotels juid bon-ton boarding placet until at on of the hostclrlcs I readily recognized the susccpltablo young Englishman , tnada his acquaintance , nnd by speaking so fa- mlllarlarly about Sir Kdmund Antrotxu and eminent famlllles I had mot In London , soon Ingratiated myself deep In his estimation. The poor fool confided to mo the secret of his chart ) alter the pretty crcolo and her favorable reception ot till suit. Ho had already with avidity accepted the Invita tion of the old aunt to spend several evenIngs - Ings lit their private pnrlcrs. But the young lady was card-crazed , and demanded at each visit to play with her there or take her there. She was AS Imperious as a Oastlll an queen , suffering no cross to any whim. And en ho stayed , In order to monopolize lili prize , but the loving creature so befuddled his brain that ho was already loser f200 or SOO which trillo he dared nothing for , as ho now felt secure In car rying her off as his bride at the close of the season , having already won the old lady's consent and several very warm and tender tcte-tctM with the dear girl. I felt 1 ko warning him that ho was building chiitcaux en cspagne , but con cluded on using him first. So I manifested an Intoroited sympathy In his exciting pur suit , nnd offered to assist by timely sug gestions as touching my London experience and my having heard among them of the blue blood ot his family. "Come With me tonight nnd wo will surely meet her nt one of the tables with the In- ovltublc aunt at her side , however. When she quits playing she's a perfect tigress of fury If Interrupted before I can tccuru you an Introduction. " Just what I wanted , for the exclusive lit- tie aristocrat kept herself secluded all day , not deigning to let sunshine or sea breeze kiss the smooth olive of her cheek. Johnny Bull told me she expressed herself so pret tily as having n horror for sea woater and as being too healthy already , so she always took breakfast and dinner In her boudoir , only condescending to exhibit herself under the softened light ot chandeliers. "H was really too tiresome to bo dressed nnd cn- nuled by dressing maids moro than once a day , and but 'for the fascinations of the night's game would not often bo bored the slnglo time , " she said. When wo entered the ? nloon at 9 o'clock that evening the crcolo star was already seated nt the card table , with her duenna satellite shining In the regular orbit as usual and a crowd of admiring gentlemen surrounding the charmed piradlsalcal oasis. Sauntering to where I could get n fair view of the wonderful lady gambler , sure enough I detected , by the well known playing as well as by the half disguised features , Jack Heberly. But who was the old woman ? For the life of me I could not fl\ her aj any man or woman I had ever seen. Both were ele gantly , richly dressed , nnd every move ment , especially of the duenna , was ex quisitely refined. The young widow was acting her part splendidly not as an ex pert gambler , but as a fair player , a girl infatuated with gambling , faultless In demeanor meaner , with only the abandon incident to the surroundings. Anywhere away from the salon , I learned , her appearance and behavior were those of a perfect lady , but a petted , spoiled , relf-wllled , domineering llttlo beauty. Detective Black was at Cin cinnati , where I telegraphed him that night requesting him to como at once. "She's going to the ladles' porlor and has bpen gracious enough to let me fetch you. Como along , quick. " And Johnny Bull fairly dragged mo over to the reception room. As he led mo forward I posed my self as carelessly as possible , but still forc ing my face to express admiration for the fair enchantress. "Miss Ledue , permit me : My friend , Mr. Shannon. " Miss Leduo looked quickly up , with Just the least bit of llghtnlng-llko glance of ap prehension. Thus I saw that Jack Heberly and Miss Ledue were ono and the same In dividual at least , was almost sure ; not tuily , for It was the most consummate ' acting I had ever witnessed. "Very proud Indeed of the pleasing honor of being received by ono who seems to besotting setting so many gentlemen In ecstatic anx iety. " Such my salutation and I natter myself Jake's acting wa but llttlo better. I produced the Impression upon my queen creole that I did not In the least suspect her disguise. "Ecstatic anxiety , Mr. Shannon , Is rather a contra-meaning capstone to your man like compliment , but , anyhow , thank you. Sit down here and tell aunty what you mean. " Rippled out Is as good a phrase as I can find to describe the really musical voice Jake had , or had acquired , and In which he ( jhe ) rattled out words In true Frenchy railroad stylo. Accepting the prof fered seat I said to the duenna , but for the queen : "Her beauty and witchery fur nish ecstacy , while her rare diplomacy be gets the anxiety. " "Oh , my ! what an acquisition to our dull society ! Are we honored by the presence of a French savant , a Russian diplomat , or 13 It the trained child of some old courtier ? I have not been so doubly , physically and mentally complimented In all this cold north , " merrily chirruped the fascinator. "Neither , mademoiselle , only a traveilng Yankee , but a rare admirer of talented beauty , and an honcU speaker of opinion formed from what ho sees surrounding his moth-attracting brilliance. " I bowed low toward Miss Leduo as I spoke , still testing her femininity , hoping to discover ono tlngo of masculinity , but In vain , "Giddy flatterer , " she laughed. "Be- ware , Mr. Late-moth , that your wings do not scorch , too. " Next evening , satisfied that Jake knew me , nnd thought I didn't recognize him , I purposely made one of the party nt the table where Miss Leduo was playing , and made no effort to conceal from her my abil ity In the game. The game was broken up at a much earlier hour than usual by her withdrawal on the plea of headache. I know It was to get away trom my eyes. Still , I looked In vnln for a single move ment or word from her thnt would betray the man. The next evening I mot her In the parlor , and also became acquainted with the other ladles present , and exerted myself to become - como a welcome visitor by all the gay agreeableness I could muster. And still Jake maintained his dl.-gulso so perfectly that I began to doubt my discovery nnd to wonder It It was not simply n strange resemblance. I went to my room to conJure - Juro up a plan to force some act or word to my hermaphroditic enigma. Next day Dotectlvo Black arrived , but ho , too , was dlagulsrd , and so completely metamorphosed into n well dressed , com mercial looking , bcwhlskcrcd western mer chant that I would never have recognized him had ho not spoken to me. Safe In my room I told him of my d | < - covery , of my being satisfied that Miss Leduo was Jaka Hfberly , but also Informed him of my Inter doubts and their cause. That night at the card table we had the pleasure of a long , close scrutiny of the two ladles. .Miss Lcdne ( apparently satis fied at not seelng-tne ) was engroixed with her winnings , and the duenna iiaylng close attention to her ward. Suddenly Black grasped my arm and led mo to a private corner , where he whispered : "You have treed the game. I'm satisfied It Is Jake. Ami I rccognUo the duenna as an old ling of New Orleans , keeper of onu of the tonlcst bagnios ot the city. " "Will yon urrest ? " I asked. No papers yet. I'll take tonight's train and procure them. Keep your cyo on the birds till I got luck here tomorrow night.1 And ho left me. I utaycd about the room until the game broke up and our birds wont to th'tr romi. I wan n-it yii Mlhflsd at my Inability lo sect some act or detect homo tana or word that was masculine In Mini Loduo and I dntermlned to try my plan be fore Black returned. Opportunity offered next evening , Seeing Miss Leduo and her aunt with several other of my late lady acquaintances In the parlor , I purcliaicd a dozen fine oranges and entered the presence ot the lidlCE. "Now , I propose a game of base ball , lailloV I exclaimed , latighlnRly. us I nlooil In the middle of the room. "I'll be 'pUehor' of an orange to rnch of you , and the onn who falls to catch my throw loses the orango. " My proposition met with n gleeful no- ceplance , nnd they nil prepared for my throwing. I closely watched each lady ns I pitched her nn orange. 13vcry ono spread her lap to catch the orange except M'M ' Ledue. who. manlike , quickly snapped her knees together and ( ho ornngo rolled on I ho floor , I wat satisfied. The woman who nukca no lap Is n mnn ! Black came that night. I told him of my ruse and Its resulting exposure of Jake's not to my eyes alone. Ulack would not wait until morning , leat some mishap might glvn Jake n scare and ho would slip through our fingers. So wo sought the business man * j tiger of the hotel and told him privately i of our bu'lncss. The man looked thunder struck when wo nnmeil the beautiful creole guest an a fugitive from Justice , charged with the double crlmo of forgery nnd mur der. But , ns ho had no nUcritntlvo , and thn nfuro willingly ns Black's plan would avoid any scene In public to Injure- his hotel , the landlord led ns directly to the room ot Mini Ledne's aunt , which opened Into that of the young lady. Wo had taken the precaution to take with us the matron of the houso. Her voice and housekeeping excuse brought , the aunt to the door , when behind the matron Black and I quickly slipped into the roqm , Jumped through the Intervening door , and were standing at Jake's bedside with two pistols pointed at his noio , when Hint worthy started from sleep. Seeing mo nnd recognizing Blnrk , the culprit gave up ami coolly reached out liU hands for the brace lets , which Black snapped on , drew him from the bed nnd told him to dress ( illicitly nnd co with ns quietly In time for the night train. Ho did so , nnd was securely manacled. Meanwhile the landlord was keeping watch over the watching duenna , who was neatly celled In her bed , trembling nt tlio drama being performed. On seeing Jake manacled between us the old hag for got her respectability and broke out with a volume of pro fa no abuse , principally di rected against my modest self at a dccolt- ful devil. Over $11,000 was found In their baggage , with part of which Black settled all of our hotel bills. . Wo got our game on the night train , mil safely Jailed them In a few days at New Orleans. Black divided the reward with me , as also a further reward for securing the money drawn on the forged draft. Jake's lawyer succeeded In lessening his sentence : to con finement In the penitentiary twenty years for manslaughter. The duenna was dis charged , there being no specific charge against her. In Not n l' ' w Instil ncet Tliny Are Credited to tlio Wrong Turnout ) . Although the newspapers often print par agraphs about familiar phrase * and their misplaced authorship , the mistakes , as a gone ral rule , continue to bo made. Thcro Is.hat story of Wellington at Waterloo , which originated , according to the Buffalo Courier , with Allison , the historian. The French having at last broken , so the tale goes , the Iron duke cried to his reserves : "Up , guards , and at them ! " In face of fre quent denials , by Wellington himself , that he ever gave such a command , It Is re peated to this day as an historical fact. An artist once went to the duke nnd begged to bo allowed to paint him In the very at- tltudo he took when ho uttered those stir ring words. "Go to the devil , " said the duke. Again , a dowager asked him It ha really did say : "Up , guards , and nt them ! " To this the duke replied : "I couldn't have raid It , madame ; It would have been ab surd. What I probably did say to my staff officers was something llko this : 'Gentle- men , you will now move upon the enemy's right. ' " Only a short while ago a Now York paper repeated as authentic the story that Marshal Blucher , while visiting London and looking down on the city from the dome of St. Paul's , exclaimed : "Was fuer plunder ! " This expression would convoy to the mind unacquainted with the German Idiom the Idea of "What a pluco to loot. " The fact Is , however , that In German the word "plunder" Is used in a sense wholly different from that of "plunder" In English. The Ger man word "plunder" means "trash , " "worth less finery , " "tinsel , " and the phrase "was fuer plunder" signifies "what trash , " "what rubbish. " But the use of "plunder" oven In this sense Is restricted , so that Blucher would not have used It In a contemptuous way , as signifying that the city spread out beneath him was rubbish. Ho would have tisod another word. So , a German who- hears this remark attributed to Bluchcr Is loth to behove It , knowing that In similar circumstances ho would never utter It himself. Almost everybody believes that It was Napoleon who said : "God always favors the heaviest battalions. " As a matter of fact , Tacitus was the first who Is known to have used the phrase , and Vol- talro and Mme. Sovlgno uttered it In ex actly the manner credited to Napoleon. That other familiar ono : "Tho guard dlos , but never surrenders , " was attributed to Cambronne , who was made a prisoner at Waterloo. It was actually Invented by Kougemont , an author of witty sayings , two days after the light. Tlicso Instances ot mlscrcdltcd quotations are by no means confined to times In the rcmoto past. During the campaign pf 18SO the reporter of u newspaper In 1'aterson , N. J. , put Into the mouth of General Hancock the statement that "the tariff is a local Issue , " It was instantly seized upon by the re publicans , nnd although It was Immediately contradicted , the presidential candidate was so generally credited with It that many dem ocrats even came to bcllovo that the phrase was uttered by him. There Is a phrnso almost universally attributed to Grovcr Cleveland , which ho did not orlglnato namely , "I'ubllo ofllco Is n public trust. " The author of this terse truth was Daniel a. Lament , and It was first used by him In a campaign sketch of Mr. Cleveland's public career. But while this fact might bo re peated every day from now to the crack ot doom , It Is 1 kuly that the president will have the credit for the Haying , partly because - cause It "sounds likes him , " and pirtly because - cause It Is known to epltoml/o his views ro- gardlng the occupancy of political ofllco , Wo could not Improve the quality If w paid doublet the price.
