GHICACJO , Juno 8. It was a wild day In
wheat , with prices rushing frantically up
and down In long jumps , Influenced on the
ono hand by higher cables nnd buying , and
on the other by liberal Belling. Trading
was very heavy , . nnd July closed with a
naln of 2V4c. Corn closed lo higher , oats
2c higher , nnd provisions at a slight de
cline.
The wheat market opened with Irom 1 to
IVlo advance nnd soon sold down from % c
to % c , rallied from lc to l'.4c , eased off
% c , then advanced 1' c , nnd closed strong.
The cables were a llttlo mixed , but gener
ally higher , early public ntlvlccs quoting spot
firm and ' /jd higher , and futures up from
3/4d to % d. Outside business was heavy and
and the market continues to broaden , New
York being a heavy buyer. There was a
rumor that the Missouri atato reports showed
a falling oft In the condition ot 12 points
during May , and this caused a good deal of
excitement , but Inter In the day was an
nounced nt 79 , ngalnst 87 last month , n
decline ot 8 points. Around the top prices
of the day a great deal of long wheat came
out , the Washington forecast of rain In
Kansas and the northwest causing holders
to unload. Wheat changed hands rapidly
In largo quantities , a feature of the trading
being buying by I'ardrldge , who has been a
prominent bear. The fluctuations wcro fre
quent and sharp.
There was a heavy trade In corn , fluctua
tions covering from lo to lic range. The
market was strong on an urgent demand
and scarcity of offerings. '
Oats continued Its sensational advance ,
being very strong within lc limits. Un
favorable crop reports wore the bull feature.
1'rovlslons were very dull nnd slightly
lower on selling by packers. The advance
In wheat kept the market steady. Com
pared with last night July pork Is 2 > ,4c
lower ; July lard 5c lower , nnd July ribs un-
changed.

MINNEAPOLIS , June 8. The local wheat mar
ket today was active and advnnclnB. There

of larfio business. I'rlcea nt the opening were
nt nn advance of Tic. and at that prlco there ap
peared to bo ft desire on the part of IOIIBS to
realize. After the first rush buying again be
came steady , prices advanced gradually , con
tinuing with moderate tluctuntlons until near the
close , when there wns an ndvanc of ftc from thj
opening and about ITic for the d.iy. The cause
back of the rise was the unmi- that created the
advance on preceding dajs bad irop reports from
the southwest nnd some sensationally bad re
ports , particularly from Kansas. Cables Indi
cated n ilose sympathy with the advance In
this country , which still furlh. ; prompted the
rise. The weather throughout t' o northwest Is
dry , and the feeling was that If rains In the near
future do not relieve the condition a
further advance may be Induced frpm the situa
tion. The receipts from farmers , which have
been very liberal for the past week or two , nre
reducing largely , and are not now moro than G )
per cent on then \ erase of what they wcro one

tled.Rvcnlng 1'ost's London cablegram says :
The stock markets were Idle today and dull ,
Americans had a disappointing set back. The
grangers were weak. Fear Is expressed
hero that the passage of the tariff bill will
como too late to effect a material Improve
ment In the American trade for the present
year. Argentines wcro the only cheerful
spot In today's market. The gold premium
was down to 299. Silver was Ilrm. It Is be
lieved that much of China's purchases really
go to India. Seventeen lakhs of special
counsel drafts were sold today up to 13d ,
The gold arrivals here show signs of slacken
ing. The rumored dinicultles of a largo
wheat operator hero are untrue.
The Kvenlng Post says : Decidedly the
most Important financial Incident today wns
the grain market's advance. This movement
continued at a rapid pace today , the ad
vance over the recent loir level having al
ready surpassed the movement at the close
of March , whoso Influence on railway secur
ities waa striking. It Is altogether probable
that the market for securities will for a
time nt least bo governed by the course of
grain. The Influence of the recent declines
In commercial prices has been none the less
certain on securities because It has not
been always brought forward as n factor ,
and of all these commercial movements the
decline In wheat has been the foremost In
fluence.

FRIDAY , Juno 8.
Ilccclpts of all kinds wcro rather liberal
today , 320 cars In all. The flvo days' re
ceipts show an Increase of nearly 2,000 cattle
tlo , l.COO hogs and 2,000 sheep over supplies
for the corresponding period last \veek.
Moro cattle wcro sold than have been
hero on any ono day tor nearly thrco weeks
and the receipts Included lots ot good to
choice beeves. Prices have gene up pretty
rapidly this week , and the dressed beef men
looked on the liberal offerings today as n
good opportunity to play oven. They accord
ingly started out bidding considerably lower
prices , but In the meantime speculative ship
pers and outsldo butchers wcro not Idle , and
although early sales wcro at steady to a
shade easier prices , there was a reasonably
brisk movement , and when the moat bearish
buyers got ready to trade a good share ot the
desirable cattle had changed hands. Buying
then became general , and ns Chicago was
reported stronger , late trading was brisk
and at full strong prices. The wind up was
early and at the best figures of the day.
Cows and mixed stock wcro In rather
liberal supply today , and while good to choice
stock was In fair demand nnd firm , the
common and canning grades gold slowly nnd
nt low prices. The calf market was de
moralized , dull and 75c to $1.50 lower than
ten days ago. Hough stock of all kinds
sold at about steady prices.
A fair amount of business was transacted
In stockers and feeders and on the basis of
about steady prices. The supply was small
and the demand limited. Most of the tradIng -
Ing was at from $2.75 to $3.25. Good to
choice feeders are quoted at $3.10@ > 3.40 ; fair
to good at .SOffS.OO , the commoner grades
at from $2.80 down. Representative sales :
Diiissno IHEF.
HOGS Supplies keep up well , and so do
prices. There wore nearly 10,000 hogs hero
today , the quality was very good , and the
market active at steady to a shade stronger
prices. The demand was good from all
iources and trade ruled lively right from
: ho Jump off. Heavy and butcher weight
logs had a shade the best of It , but the
ranga of prices was narrow. The heavier
; rados sold largely at ft.50 to $4.55 , and the
Ight and mixed loads mostly at * 4.4R to
11.50. Prime heavies sold up to $4.CO , and
several of the commoner loads of pigs sold
down around $4.35 and $1.40. The pens wore
cleared in good season , the bulk ot the hogs
soiling ht $4.50 nnd $4.55 , ngalnst $4.50 yes
terday and $4.55 ono week ago today. Rep

CHICAGO , Juno 8. Not a * many cattla ar
rived today as had been expected. There were
about 6,000 head , malting the supply for the ex
pired part of the week scarcely more than 1.000
hnid greater than for tins.imo time last weok.
Though apparently not as urgent as for a few
days of last week early sales were active and
st-IIcrs wrro not required to give up any part
of the advance they had earlier In the week.
Cloud to best fed enltlfl jjold quick at Thursday's
quotation ! * , and grain cattle were a little slow
nnd loner. Sales were on n bnsfs ot from Jl 25
to $3 for Inferior to extra. Il waa 11cry poor
article that had to sell below } 2.23. and It took
something very superior to hrln , ? more than
JI.83. The prevailing price * were from $2.30 to
$3.50 for cuvvs , heifers and hull * , nnd from 11.25
to $1.73 for steers Stockers and feeders received
but little attention. The calf market w.n firm.
The hog tr.nlo was quiet tod.iy , and prices were
weak and unevenly lower. Heavy nnd medium
weights received th" principal nttniitlon of the
buyers , and sold within 5c tier W ) ll . of yester
day's prices , or on a basis of SI 80 for prime.
Light frradPH were dull at a reduction of from
Co to lOc. Few of the latter sold above $1.61 , the
inline prices being from $1 4 > to $1.53. Some
very decent lots changed hands nt ( t 40 ,
and 14.31 was accepted for poorer grades. The
bulk of thi ! heavy hogs brought from $4.70 to
SI.SO. There was a better feeling toward the
close than al the opening of business but the
morning's Ios wns not recovered.
The sheep market \MU dull and unencoiiraglng.
The eastern and middle ptntci nro now turning
off n good many sheep , and the demands upon the
west nro less than it other stages of the season.
It follows , therefore , that unlcts there 1s n

larger eastern centers there Is no Improve
ment In general business. Now England
cotton mills continue to produce In excess
of the demands.
There Is llttlo that Is far reaching attend
ing evidences of Improvement reported from
the west. At Louisville there Is more de
mand for groceiles , and the leaf tobacco
market Is quiet but active , a good business
being reported. There Is more doing
among jobbers In hardware at Chicago , al
though Interior merchants tributary to that
market have not begun to buy In advance
of actual needs , and on the ether hand the
spread of the coal strike Is checking busi
ness there. Available wheat In the United
States , Canada and afloat decreased more
than 10,000,000 bushels last month , against
an average decrease In the months of May
In five preceding years of about 6,000,000
bushels each. Five months decrease of
domestic and Canadian wheat stocks In 1894
show a high average compared with like
portions of preceding years. Notwithstand
ing these exhibits Dradstrcet's returns point
to an accumulation In the United States
and Canada ot 80,000,000 bushels of wheat ,
only 85,000 bushels less than on Juno 1 a
year ago , and twice or thrco times as much
as was so held In Juno In several preceding
years. Exports of wheat. United States

Special telegrams from leading trade cen

NEW YOHK , Juno 8. Qradstreet's Finan
cial Itovlow tomorrow will say : Speculative
activity has been on a slightly Increased
scale. Narrow conditions have , however ,
continued to surround the market and the
want of any general Interest In railroad and
other securities Is apparent. The profes
sional element In Wall street and other cities
seem to bo still responsible for the bulk of
the transactions In the share list , though
this week has presented evidences of activity
on the part of some of the larger speculators.
The oxtonslve short Interest hua furnished
material for a fair Improvement , based upon
the adoption ot the sugar schedule tn the
Eonato , on the rejection of the measure re
pealing the 10 per cent tax on utato bank
circulations , and ou the advance tn the prlco
of wheat. In this movement Sugar hung
back and the lead was taken by the railway
stocks- , which scored an advance In the face
ot continued unfavorable earnings and re
ports ot damage from Btorma , as well as
serious Interruption to traffic from the ef
fects ot the coal strike , The purchasing
power baa been confined to covering of short
oalos and In manipulation Intended to take
advantage ot this circumstance. Some slight
purchasing from London U thought to bo
purely speculative , or to have originated In
part on this oldo ot the ocoan. The fact
that foreign exchange holds ateady at the
gold export point , and that this week $0,150-

factor , however , this matter was subordi
nated to the adoption by the senate ot the

The conclusion drawn by the street Is that
this nutlon Indicates the speedy passaga br
the senate of the entire bill nnd the consequent
quent release of business from the uncer

It Is noticeable , however , that Sugar stock ,

A Political Experience.
A candidate for olTlce was BO sorely besot
