STOCKS AND IIONOS. jlinro .Spccnliitlnn U * M'rooff ' III Tone but Itullii-r Dull. NDW YOIIK , Mny 29. Tlie nlinro specula tion today wns otrong In tone , but rather dull , the voltimo of btmlnes bcltiR llglitcr thnn for dome days pant. Tim holiday to morrow had possibly much to do with both the advancing tendency of prices nnd the general Inactivity. The bearn. who nre con stitutionally opposed to remaining short over a holiday , were the main buyers In the market to cover their short contracts , nnd to the short Interest Is due the ap preciation In values. The feeling of un certainty which fills the speculative mind on the eve of n holiday kept sOme purchasers out Of today's market , and this tended to restrict the business. The feature of ths > market was the heavy demand for Chlca'go Qas , the buying of which Is believed to have bee'n for the same clique which has operated so successfully In Sugar , and which , It Is said , has formol a bull pool In Oas. Their purchases sent the price tip sharply to 74 , an advance of 2 % per cent from yesterday's closing price , with only V per cent reaction nt the close. Sugar led the market In point of activity , fluctuating between 99'/4 and 101T , and closing 1 per cent down from the highest point of the day , but 1 % per cent higher than yester day. The trading In the stock was In small lots , showing the big operators were not In the market. A drive wns made on liurllngton & Qulncy In the early dealings on rumors that the April statement would show a heavy decrease In the net earnings , and the stock gave way" % per cent , but when the statement was published nnd made n far different showing , the Blmres came Into good request nnd advanced 1V4 per cent , of which Vt per cent wns lost sub sequently. St. Paul was bought by London and the west nnd rose % per cent , closing % per cent below the best. The rest of the market except Atchlson , In which there was some moderate dealings for London and Uoston accounts , wns Inactive , but the tendency of values was toward a higher range , and speculation was firm nt the close. The railway nnd bond market was bomewhat Irregular during the day , but closed steady. The Evening Post soys' The stocks which declined sharply yesterday advanced sharply today , confirming the belief that yesterday's sales were chiefly professional speculation for the decline. There were , however , a few Individually striking move ments. Chicago Gas , which went today to the highest point of the season , is de clared , no doubt with renson , to be under the manipulation of the same experts who have been lately busy In Sugar stock. This last mentioned stock reflected , as usual , today the dodging and ducking of Its speculative friends , nnd ended a llttlo h iclier. The Post's London cablegram says : The only feature of the market today was the success of the new India loan. This Is largely subscribed for nnd Is allotted nt nbout 2 per cent premium. All the lending stocks were dull. South Americans were down on the advance In the Argentine gold premium to 331. American railroad shares rallied at the close on New York quota tions , but almost nothing v\ns doing in them here. here. The following nre the closing quotations on the leading stocks of the New York ex change today : The total sales-of itocks today were 137,0)3 ) shares , Including : Atclilxon. 7,400. The two days' J5Jly ? ) , ns compared With last week , shows n-slight decrease In cattle , but n good Increase In hogi nnd sheep. Cnttlc receipts were not nt all heavy , nnd there wns gcod demand from nil sources. Trading opened out active , with prices steady to a shade stronger than Monday. It was not long before a change set In , however. Advices from Chicago of protective big re ceipts and lower prices caused a very weak feeling here , which wns further Intcnilflcd by the announcement of the restoration of enstbound live stock rates. The dressed beef men became Indifferent nnd shipping buyers withdrew their early morning bids. Sellers found It hard to get within n dime of the enrly morning prices , nnd Monday's ndvnnco was entirely lost. Trading became very dull and It was late before anything like n decent clearance had been effected. The cow market was tolerably active nnd at generally steady price' . Offerings were decidedly limited and the demand was good from nil local houses. Fat stock was strong and common nnd canning grades weak. Oood veal calves sold freely at u shade stronger prices , but common largo stock ruled dull and weak. The market for rough stock was dull and prices steady to n Minde lower. The stacker nnd feeder trade vvus livelier than for some time. Hoth regular dealers nnd country buyers seemed to want supplies , nnd , while prices showed little or no Im provement , quite a good many cattle changed hands , fair to good stock selling largely at from JJ.75 to $3.10.
