The strike among1 the coal miners Is dally
assuming a more serious aspect , ns may
be gathered from the dispatches recounting
the illltlcultlcs of manufacturers nnd trans
portation companies In widely separated lo
calities. There have been coal strikes , es
pecially In the nnthroclte mining districts ,
of long continuation and attended with more
or less Inconvenience to consumers. How
ever , with the possible exception of the
strlko In 1SS3 , when 70,000 tons of coal were
Imported Into Now York , there has never
been anything approaching In seriousness
the present difficulties. The strikes of the
past have generally been more local In their
character nnd have not crippled the com
merce nnd Industries of the whole country
to an extent that threatens to purtlnlly tie
up the railroads nnd reduce the ocean nnd
lake steamship service.
Fortunately for the west the situation Is
not nearly BO Hcrlous hero as In the east.
The western railroads reaching Omaha fore
saw a possible shortage , nnd commenced
storing coal some time ago. The Iowa lines
obtain the greater portion of their coal In
Iowa , .while the ronda'runnlng to the south
get Kansas and Missouri coal. As the strikes
are becoming more general und the feeling
of unrest Is spreading among the miners ,
there Is no telling how long It will be before
the supply from these states may bo cut oft
entirely. The Union I'aclllc obtains Us lo
comotive coal In Wyoming , and has stored
a goodly supply for emergencies. The union
Pacific , however , has been unable for the
past thirty days to get Hiich coke ns the
road Is accustomed to usennd smithing
coal Is not to be had , ns the strike covers
nil the districts producing that quality of
While the railroads In this section of the
country have all the coal that they will re
quire for the present , a gentleman , well
Informed on the situation , asserts that the
strike could not continue longer or spread
much farther without nlnrmlnff the roads
to such nn extent that they Would seize all
the coal that might bo In transit on their
lines or nt terminal points.
This has already been donp by the Penn
sylvania nnd New York Central , nnd to
some extent. It Is claimed , by the Baltimore
& Ohio. 'The Pennsylvania line is said to
have thus confiscated about 3,000 cars , which
It has done In spite of the protests of the
shippers nnd parties to whom the coal was
consigned , refusing nil settlements except
the payment of the mnrket price for the
coal seized.
The right of seizure Is claimed by these
roads on the ground that their charters
would be forfeited If they ceased to run ,
and that their passenger trains carried
United States molls ; that the government
must take the responsibility for the seizure
made In Its behalf. As to their freight ser
vice they claim that If they could not take
their shippers' coal their trains could not
bo run. nor the coal of those shippers hauled
or delivered ; and hence , that they are suf
fering no greater hardship than If the roads

These arguments In justification of their
action are presented only for the purpose
of giving nn Idea of the stand that might
be taken by the western roads , if forced
Into the necessity by a too long continuation
of the strike. ,
Thus far the strike has not spread Into
the anthracite coal Holds and there Is
plenty of coal of that description , to De
had , but It Is a very difficult matter to
change from hard to soft coal , ns the con
struction of the soft coal grates is sa
different from what is required by hard
While the price of soft coal In Now "York
has advanced 100 per cent In a little over
two weeks , the prlco here has remained
stationary. Soft coal Is now retailing In
this mnrket at $3.50 , to $1.50. per ton and up
to $7 for .the lilgh grades. Steam coal In
car lots is quoted nt J1.G5 to $2.25. Tno
cheap bituminous coal sold In this mnrket
comes principally from Iowa and some
from Missouri , and the fact that the strike
has only recently spread into those states
accounts for the absence of any advance
In the price. There la , however , a great
scarcity of smithing coal all over the state
nnd local coal dealers are flooded w'th
urgent requests for Immediate shipment ,
but they are unable to. get suplles to 1111
the orders.
The largest consumers of coal In Omaha
have been laying In a supply and are pre
pared to withstand quite a siege. The
packers nt South Omaha have obtalntd
large quantities. The water worki com
pany claims to have seventy-live cars in
store , or enough to last about thirty days ,
and other largo consumers report about
the same condition. At the same time there
Is stil ! coal enough coming to meet presetit
demands nnd It Is not yet necessary to cnll
upon the reserve stocks.
Bituminous coal In New York has ad
vanced to a point where It Is being Im
ported from Nova Scotia nnd England and
paying "a duty of 75 cents per ton. The
Virginia and Cumberland fields are about
the only soft coal districts that are being
worked In the east. The Virginia region.
owing to Its employing colored labor , has
doubled Its output since the commence
ment of the strike , working night and day. |
These miners have refused to strike. These
two districts are supplying about one-halt
of the 50,000 tons required weekly at the
port of New York. To make up the short- .
ace 80,000 tons of foreign coal have already
beVn purchased. Some of the ocean steamship - t
ship lines are changing to anthracite un i
account of the dllllculty In securing suf.--
clent soft coal. Other lines are commenc
ing1 to use foreign coal.

James M. Gammell , a man pretty well
along In years , had a lively experience with
a thug last night. The fellow rapped nt
his door and asked for something to eat
about 9 o'clock. Mr. Gammell lives at
Twenty-third and M streets. Ho Informed
the tramp that ho was alone , and , not being
familiar with the culinary department , ho
could not accommodate him. "Well , glvo mo
a glass of water , can't you ? " said the fel
low.

Mr. Gammell said he would , and , closing
the door , with the tramp on the outside , ho
got a glass of water and returned to the
door with It. As ho handed the glass out
of the door the thug put a revolver to his
face and asked Mr. Gammell to throw up his
hands. Instead of throwing up his hands he
knocked the revolver up nnd slammed the
door , which had a spring lock on It. Ho
then grasped a double-barreled shotgun
and returned to the door to accommodate
his visitor , but the fellow had skipped out ,
Mr. Gammell followed after him for a few
blocks , but was unable to overtake him and
ho got away. _

Slabaugh , died at tha family rcsldenco on
Twenty-third street at G o'clock yes
terday morning. Six weeks ago Mrs.
Slnbaugh returned lo South Omaha
from Colorado , where she spent
several months In the hope of Improv
ing her health. The change In climate made
a slight Improvement for a temporary
period , but the dread disease of consumption
had made such Inroads that all efforts to
check It were fruitless. They have ono
child , Fannie.
The remains will bo taken to Randolph , O. ,
for burial , and the funeral services will bo
conducted there. The friends of the family ,
however , will bo given an opportunity to
view the remains nt the residence this
morning between the hours of 10 and 12
o'clock. At 4 o'clock In the afternoon the
doctor , accompanied by his daughter , Mrs.
Eunice Drockett , mother of the deceased , and
Miss Cora Drockett , her sister , will leave for
Ohio.
Mrs. Slabaugh was a most estimable woman
and was loved and resp-cted by a very largo
circle In this city. The doctor has the
deepest sympathy of the community.

The location of the garbage dump has
been changed from tflo foot of Missouri
avenue to the place where the stock yards
sewer empties Into the river. A passable
roadway will bo built to the now dump.

this morning to visit the residence of Dr.
W. H. Slabough and view the remains of
their late sister.
A shooting contest nt blue rocks was haa
yesterday afternoon by three of South
Omaha's crack shots. Flvo dollars entrance
foe was charged , and each man was allowed
to shoot at fifteen rocks. The score was as
follows : Tonv Flynn , 10 ; Dick Dorlln , 0 ;
Miles Walsh , 4. Mr. Flynn carried off all
the glory and won the money besides.

The battalion was divided Into four com
panies Tuesday afternoon by Julius Penn ,
first lieutenant Second Infantry , who has
charge of the Instruction of tha cadets.
The drills began March 15 , and slnco that
tlrno the seniors have attended thirty-five
drills , the juniors IKvolvo , sophomores
eleven and freshmen seven. Some of the
juniors nnd a few of the sophomores have
also attended the optional morning drills
held on the regular drill days. All drills
have thus far been confined to the "set
ting up" exercises , the marching move
ments o the squad and a few company
drills. Their progress has boon so satis
factory as to warrant the organization of
the boys Into a battalion of four com
panies. The cadet officers have been selected , -
lected from thoap who have shown the
greatest knowledge of the drill nnd these
most marked In their military bearing and
deportment.

Irrigation which he has recently Invented.
The firm U now making the pumps In sizes
with cups of one-half gallon to three gallons ,
the drat size being capable of Irrigating from
ton to twenty acres , and the larger size from
seventy-five to ono hundred acres. The
prices range from $10 to $75 , nnd the pump
may be made ono day and sot up the next.
In height the sizes uro from ton to twenty-
five feet. Nos. 1 and 2 are operated with
one-horse power. Nos. U nnd 4 require a
two-horso sweep power with the tumbling
rod and driver. The price of the machine Is
