Wheat Went Up and Down with Bewilder ing Frequency Yo.tonky , GENERAL FROSTS CAUSED THE STRENGTH Corn Kxprrlriiccd n Mrcly 'Inido During the 1'lrtt Hour , hut Win Quiet Later , the IlaiiKu ' "r "in " Kxccedlugly Narrow. CHICAGO , May 21. Wheat went up and down xvlth bewildering alacrity today , clos ing with a ? 4c gain , after an advance of l&c and an equal decline. Frosts at homo and abroad caused the strength and free/- ItiB xvas rcoponBlblo for the temporary rcac tlons. July corn closed unchanged , oats un changed and provisions flnMitd slightly higher. In wheat there was n heavy trade and broad market , xvllh prices very Irregular. Opening trades were at from % c to Ic ad- vanre , and after selling down } iu rallied IVic , broUe l'/4c , rallied Vtc , changed some and closed flrm. The early atrength came from the frost scare In the west. The Btrongcr tone xvas considerably helped by private ndvlcc3 from abroad , reporting damage - ago there by black frost. The decrease In the visible supply of 1,468,000 bu. also acted IIH a strengthening factor. A good many local longs Bold out on the early rally and many went short. Partridge was again a prominent seller during all the early morn ing , but these offerings xvcre very readily absorbed by anxious buyers. Frco realizing WOT reponslblp for the sharp brrak later , but more buying firmed up the market nt the close. Corn experienced a lively trade during the first hour , but was quiet later , prices for the day covering but from % c to % c range. The general tone was firmer , the strength coming from the xvcathcr. Opening trades xvero at from % c to V4c advance , sold up from VSc to % c , reacted from % c to 7 c , ruled firmer , changed tome and closed as stated. The Interest In oats centered In Septem ber , xvhlch was bought freely early , and " " " ft" prices adx-anccd from Vic to % c. An In- croabo In the offerings ami the decline In other grains created weakness and prices receded from Vjo toc. . A small reaction followed the bulge and the market closed quiet. Lower prices at the yards and hog re ceipts largely In excess of the estimates caused a slight decline In values at the opening In provisions. The market soon firmed up to near Saturday's closing figures on the boom In xvhcat and corn. H was extremely dull later on , with xveakness In response to the break In wheat. The mar ket xvas very narrow. Just before the close there xvas some buying , values advancing to the outside figures of the day , xvlth the closing strong for pork nnd lard and flrm for ribs. Compared with Saturday night July pork Is Cc higher , July lard unchanged and July ribs 2'/4c higher. The leading futures ranged as follows : ArilclcR. | Open. | High. | Low. | Close. NEW YORK , May 21.-The trailliiB was active on the Stock exchange Today from the opening till the closing of business , and the aggregate transactions were larger than on any day for months ) mst and more xvldely distributed. A strong tone characterized the opening dealings , xvhlch xvas due to pur chases for the foreign account as xvell an. to the firmness of American securities on the London Stock exchange. There xvns good buying In all the arbitrage stocks during the jinornlng , but during the afternoon a large percentage ot these purchases xvcre resold xvhlch helped swell the volume of the selling movement , which the short interest manipu lated. The first sign of xveaknoss xvas shcrwn In Sugar , which , aftew an ad vance of % per cent , broke 2 % per cent on liquidating sales for the ac count of a belated bull whom the recent de cline had forced to sell stock xvhlch he was holding for a rise. The general list sympa thized xvlth the depression In Sugar and de clined ' /4 to "A per cent , the latter In Susquehanna - quehanna & Western preferred , the other Industrials and grangers also participating In the reaction. A quick rally followed In which most of the losses xvere recox-ered. Sugar sold up l',6 per cent.j receded % per cent and rccox'ered 1 % pe > cent. Tho" mar ket became somewhat Irregular about 11 o'clock , and shortly thereafter took another downxvard turn under the leadership of Northern Pacific preferred , which was heax1- lly sold on , a report that the plan of reor ganization likely to be adopted would In clude a heavy assessment on the preferred stock. An adx-ance of % per cent had been made In the shares In the opening on Lon don buying , and the break from the top was 4 per cent. Western selling of Chicago Gas resulted In-a decline of 2 % per cent from the best price of this morning , which was 1 % per cent above Saturday's closing. The grangers broke. . % to 1 % per cent , the latter In Burlington , and Union Pacific and Read ing 1 > 4 per cent. Sugar 1 % per cent , and the rest of them > / & to 1 per cent. Before noon Northern Pacific preferred had rallied 1 % , and the other shares xvhlch had re ceded made a fractional recovery. After midday prices advanced for nearly an hour , -improvement ranging to 1 % per cent. About 1 o'clock the upxvard movement was checked , and a decline of U to 2'i per cenf was established. Before 2 o'clock a frac tional rally took place , which was of brief duration , and under renexrc'd Belling prices again sought a lower level , After delivery hour an Im oved tone xvas noticeable. Some few of the specialties xvere weak In the final trading , but the general market , although lower than Saturday , closed flrm. The Evening Post says : Perhaps the most Important factor in determining the > course of today's market was the foreign brokers' attitude. These houses did not , as they xvero apt to do , emphasize Saturday , ' ) ) final break in prices hero by a weak and. feverish movement. On the contrary London quota tions for American stocks ruled today be fore the opening I1/ , points or more above the Now York level. This recovery was doubtless largely duo to orders from this side , possibly from shorts who xvlshcd to cover. ' The railway and miscellaneous bond mar ket xvas xveak throughout the greater portion tion of the day , but some of the leading securities recovered sharply In the final , dealings. , . Receipts fell very little sliort of last Monday's run and the quality was hardly as good as toward the close of last week. Sellers found conditions against them and most of them had to ac cept prices n shade to 5c lower than Satur day. A few would not accept any decline and In consequence there were nearly 1,000 hogs In the pens at the close , part of them A however , In speculators' hands. Eastern markets were lower , supplies , were ample and prospects good for plenty of hogs this week. Only one shipper was in the market anil1 local houses were all more or less inde pendents. "Cudahy , usually the biggest buyer , did not buy a hog. Speculators were cau tious to the point of practical inactivity and trade jvas dull and unsatisfactory through out. Asldo from a "pot" that sold for $4.55 the range of prices was from J4.CO to $4.70 for common to choice hogs of all weights , with trio bulk of the trading at $4.05.
