Tlio share specu lation today wns characterised by con siderable activity , but the Increased volume of business wns duo to the Inauguration of n selling movement , which Included Sugar , St. 1'nul , Htirllngton & Qulncy end Chlcaco Gas , and In lessor degree others of the active flharea. The pres sure to sell was most pronounced In Sugar. There Is a growing belief that the refining sugar Interests will not receive that con sideration of which they have claimed to be assured In the tariff bill If It should roach lln.il put-wage. The situation In Washington Is becoming more unsettled and the outlook Is not so clear as It wns a few weeks back for the Sugar people. The shares are , however , strongly sup ported when attacked , nnd today after the Bellini ? movement started at the opening had spent Its force good buyers were not found wanting , whose purchases caused a recovery of the early loss nnd even sent the prices temporarily above the opening figures. The curly decline was 2 > & per cent , the subsequent appreciation 2J6 per cent , then followed a reaction of 1 % per cent nnd n final rally of U , making a decline on the day of % per cent. Sugar preferred lost 1 per cent. There were quite heavy sales of JJur- llngton & Qulncy In the llrst hour , despite the fact that It was generally admitted that the regular dividend would bo declared , and a decline of % per cent was effected. St. Paul was even heavier than Its sister stock and there' were evi dences of liquidation of the shares held by a bull pool , which hoped to llnd a mar ket on the strength which It was hoped the Iturllngton dividend would Impart to the dealings In the granger group. These expectations were not fulllllcd und the price of St. I'aul moved down on the largo offerings made 1 % per cent , with only ' , i recovery at the close. Rock Island declined % and Northwestern stands unchanged compared with yesterday. Chicago Gas was sold down 1JJ per cent during the morning , railed % In the afternoon and reacted % , losing 1 per cent on the day. A break of Z\tt wns made In National Leaden on sales believed to be for the account of Insiders , nnd tlje stock closed within % of the lowest point touched , .The gen eral market was weak throughout the day and clost-d heavy , with prices as a rule \'t to 3V4 below yesterday's final sales. Exceptions were Pacific Mull , New York Central and Missouri Paclllc , which aie IJi and V4 per cent higher respectively. The bond market was weak all day. The Evening Post says : Partly because of the western railroads' further move In the rate cutting matter , and partly , per haps , because of the Burlington dividend , the early movement of the granger stocks showed a fair degree of firmness. In the last half hour , however , a vigorous pro fessional attack , centering in St. Paul , and assisted probably by some liquidation , caused a few rather striking net declines. This movement , however , extended over only a small part of the list , the market In general being quite Irregular. Today' * cattle market was not comforting to sellers. Not only was It ills- cournglngly dull , but It was weak to a degree. Eighteen thousand cattle Is too big a supply for the slim demand , ns shippers were made aware of today , for they had to submit to n decline varying from Cc to lOc per 100 Ibs. There were lots of good to prime heavy cattle here , and that class especially sold bad. Hut even the fat , sleek 1,100 to 1,230-lb. steers that have been sellIng - Ing so patlsfaclorlly of late could not be moved at former prices. The only descriptions for which the market was not profoundly weak were choice cows and heifers. They were scarce nnd sold nearly ns well ns before. I'rom J3.80 lo J4 bought the bulk of the dresxed beef and shipping steers , and J2.75 to J3.40 were the prevailing pi Ices for common to choice cows and heifers. Stackers and feeder * arc In fair n iuei < t and continue to sell high as compared with beeves. The calf market was steady. They bought good hogs nt J1.93 lo J5 , and the cream of the olferlngs at J3.05. Trade was dull at the opening and was more Intensely so later In the forenoon. Some of the packers were out of the market entirely , and the few who were nt work acted as though they wished they were not In It. Movement of Hogs Moderate and Killing for the Week Fulls Off Some. CINCINNATI. May 1C. ( Special Telegram to The Hec. ) Tomorrow's 1'rlce Cinrent will say : The movement of hogs Is moderate for the time of year. Western packing returns show 210,000 for the week , against 230,000 last week , nnd 245,000 last year , making n total of 2,610,000 since March 1 , against 1,895,000 a year ago. 1'roin- lnent places compare as follows : PROBLEM FOB , THE BUILDERS. Inspector * llejrln Doctoring the Federal HulldliiK L'ouncliitloiiH. Inspector Adolph Cluss of tlio Treasurj" department Is again In the city , and this time he Is superintending a test of the piers of the new postofllce. The stability , or rather lack of stability , of the founda tion Is still exciting the apprehension of the officials and it has been determined to test the various piers with heavy weights , and after noting the result take such pre cautionary measures before going further with the construction of the building as will Insure Its standing solidly aftqr com pletion. The pier In tlio northwest corner Is now undergoing a test. It covers a little over 100 square feet of ground and It Is weighted with 230 tons of pig lead that wns hauled up from the smelter for the purpose. This gives a weight of a little over two tons to the square foot. The estimated weight that the pier will have to carry after the building Is completed Is two tons. The weight will be left there for thirty days. It has already been there several days and the pier Is still going down unevenly. The Idea that "surface water" was responsible for the unfavorable conditions that exist there was abandoned long ago , even by those who believed at the start that such was the case , and the fact that there are n lot of springs there Is now conceded by them. 'C" ! - How to get a sdrnVbulldlng on an Inse cure and unstable foundation is the problem that now confronts tha. builders , and It Is by no means a slmiJa/ttiie , ns they are con stantly finding out. . Compared with receipts for the llr.tt half of last week the three day's supply shows a falling off of 700 cattle nnd 700 sheep , while the Increase In hogs amounts to over 5,000 head. The supply of entile today wns just about up to the nvcragc , nnd ns n nn > the quality of the offerings was very good. Trade wns brisk and prices strong on tne handy light beeves , but slow and very dull on the heavier grades. Dressed bei'f men were all good buyers of the kind of cattle that suited them , that Is the light and medium weights , nnd would pay more for good , fleshy steers weighing around 1,100 Ibs. than for 1,400-lb. beeves. The demoralized condition of eastern and Kuro- pean markets dampened the ardor of ship ping nnd export buyers , nnd sn-llers ex perienced considerable difficulty In work ing oft cattle weighing from 1,200 Ibs. up. Compared with neighboring markets thi trade today was In very good shape , am long before noon the supply had changed hands , With less than a dozen loads of rows In the yards the trade presented no new features. Good , fnt moult was In active demand and strong , while the under gradcrt were no weaker than they have been rt- cently. Most anything that the diessed beef men could use sold at $ : t or over. There was a light supply of calves , a gooil demand and a strong , active market. Hough stock of nil kinds sold freely and at it shade better prices. The Htqcknr nnd feeder market wns rather active and generally prices ruled firm. Country buyers took hold more fieely and the supply wns pretty well cleaned up nt the close.
