THE OMAHA. Corn closed > ,4c higher , oats ' ,4c higher and provisions , attcr u lifeless session , closed slightly higher throughout the Hat. Wheat started weak nnd weary. The early weakness was .ttrlbuled to the weather , nbsfnco of advices from abroad and Iho uncertainty attached to the visible supply. Initial transactions showed a Ios of from J/4c to % c , and , under fair offerings , sold down a fraction more , rallied % c later on , changed some and closed as stated. There was much less for sale after the opening nnd prices gradually recovered , the visible showing a fair slued decrease , 1,010,000 bu. , which was larger than expected , and tended to strengthen the market. It was supposed that one of 'he leading sellers early was covered later and was a stimulating factor. Clo.ilng prices wcro but > 4c from the top. There was not much doing In corn , the price keeping Within % c to ! c range. The general tone early was weak and prices ruled lower , but rallied later on with wheat , and closed fairly firm nml with a IrluVgaln. In Oats there was a good trade and a firmer feeling existed for May and June. The other futures were Irregular. July de clined /c and later rallied % c to Use in sympathy with wheat. With n decline In values for live hogs , the provision market opened slightly lower. The market was dead during the balance of the session. It was estimated that very little , If any , moro than a score of transactions were recorded for the day. Compared with Saturday night July pork , lard und ribs were tach 2'/4c hfgher. * Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat , TO cars ; corn , 270 cars ; oats , 270 cars ; hogs , 10,000 head. Farmers In the central and southern portions of Minnesota are again marketing some wheat , and It Is expected they will continue to market steadily until It Is all Hold. T-.iu general ilenmnJ was good for cash wheat and prices averaged about Hit.- same as Salurdav. ranging nlnjut 2c above Hie price of July. Milling companies itn- erally complain that the } ' could not obtain prices for Hour on the basis that they had to pay for cash wheat. NR\V YORK , May H. Stock e.xchaiigo trading reached low water mnrk today , the "KBreguto of the transactions being under 75,000 shares. The aalos of but ono stock recorded 1,000 Kliarcs. H was a hollduy on the London Stock exchange nnd the arbitrage houses were therefore out of the market. Another circumstance which tendrd'lo limit the trading was the occurrence of the elec tion for ofllcers and governors of the cx- clmngcM , In which more Interest was mani fested than for years. A firm lone characterized the opening deal ings , but Sugar , which had opened U per cent lower , receded nn additional 14 per cent , began to decline on moderatn selling and gradually dropp'd 1 % per cent , to 104 % . At the low point buyers came Into the mar ket whose purchases caused a recovery of % per cent , hut icntwed sales In the final trading caused a reaction of I1 , 6 per cent. Sugar preferred declined 1 per cent. The depreciation In UIBSJ shares wns due to man ipulation , there being no news on the strict calculated to Influence the speculation therein. Chicago Gas was bought during the morning on ord'rs from Insiders , many of which came from Chicago , and an advance ot 'n per cent was established on moderate dealings. The entire advance was lost In the afternoon by reason of lack of support and the stock clcsed only ' , psr cent above the lowest figure touched. General Electric was stronger during the morning , then be came heavy , rallied In the first part of the last hour and weakened again at the close. The fluctuation In the stock was within a limit of 7i per cent , nnd a gain of % per cent was made on the day. The railway list was neglected , St , Paul alone making any showing In the trading , and , after declining & per cent , rallied U per cent. The other grangers were dealt In very lightly and the movement therein was Insignificant , the only stock showing an advance nbovo a fraction was Mobile & Ohio. Cordage com mon Is down ' /i and Rubber 1T6 per cent , and Kansas & Texas and" Denver & Ho ! Grande preferred 1 per cent. The bond market was firm during the greater part of the day , but became Irregular In the late dealings. The Evening Post says : The Stock ex change election overshadowed speculation today. This event , In connection with the London Stock exchange holiday nnd follow ing the apathy of the last week or ten days , made a market that was almost unparalleled In point of Inactivity. It was so narrow that an order to sell Invariab'y forced quota tions down a fraction , while an order to buy worked them In the opposite direction. The western freight rate war exerted an ominous Influence. Railroad executive ofBcials openly confess that at the present schedules" they are doing business at a loss , and a number of prominent railroad presidents have ex pressed what appears to be a genuine deslro to terminate the war. ( Special to The Hee. ) Reports received hero from several Dlayk Hills mining districts Indicate a return of the prosperity which existed previous to the unfortunate difficulty be tween the South Dakota Mining company and the labor unions some months ago. That the coming season will be a red letter one for the mining Industry of the Hills there Is little doubt. .Never before In Its history has the outlook for a season of un exampled prosperity been better. During the past twelve months much attention has been given the Hills by outside capitalists , and the result will be surprising to many. No less than ten trusted agents have for the past two months been examining the mining properties of that section , and It Is said that In each case the report made to headquarters was a most flattering one. In addition to the South Dakota Mining company , which , it Is stated , will resume operations about the ,1st of June , a number of. other mining companies have recently been organized , among them the Canadian , the Consolidated Mining1 company of Bald mountain and the "Hoston and Providence company. All of these Companies will con duct operations on a very large scale. Each will erect reduction plants ranging from 100 to 300 tons dally capacity , and using such process as they find beat adapted to their ores. New life and activity will be put Into every phase dl fh'o mining Industry this summer. TheJ-'CoisolIdated Chlorlna- tlon works' resumption Is only a matter of a very few weeks ; fhe' cyanide plant has already resumed , and. the cyanldo plant now under construction at Pluma will be full of life by the beginning- next month , and about that tlnr ? , , * ! ) erection of a 100- ton custom chlorlnatlon plant will bo In augurated. There ls ° 'alao.a prospect that the . .Terravlllo'aniiCentraV jnlnes will be started up shortly. " > i.i " The placer minlng'-outlook Is also un usually bright. There are at present qulto a number of men at 'work 'In the various districts of the Hills , placer mining In the numerous gulches that In years gone by yielded big pay to the owner ? . Many of these claims , although abandoned by the original locators , ara now profitably worked , the operators making from $2 to $7 per day. Along Deadwood gulch , between that city and Central , there are over a dozen dlf- , ferent parties , each with strings of slulco boxes of from one to ton each. The same work can be seen on upper Whltewood above Pennlngton ; on Ulackt'all , Hidden Treasure and Sawplt gulches ; all In the vicinity of Central City , and emptying Into Deadwood creek. On Whltewood creek this class of min ing has been carried on every season since the settlement of the country , which fact certainly Indicates that the results must bo satisfactory otherwise the -claims would have been abandoned years ago. Further down the same stream , in the vicinity of Crook City at one time a booming camp a largo tract of ground was leased last fall by J. A. Chute , who during the past winter has been at work developing It. Ho has sunk several shafts to bedrock and drifted on the latter. He reports the prospects very good and will commence sluicing prob ably some tlmo next week. It Is only a question of tlmo when some company with ample means will start at some point In the vicinity of Crook City , on Whltowood creek , and run a flume up to Its Junction with Deadwood creek. Such an enterprise would return millions to Its owners. There Is not a bench or bar In the entire distance that does not contain more or less gold. It has ' always bcon the ambition of many of the 'old-time prospectors to uncover and work the bedrock of Whltewood Falls , where they assert and not without reason that the yellow metal could bo scooped up by the shovelful. The difficulty to over come Is the water and the Immense boulders which completely fill the narrow gorge. The former could bo handled In a largo flume , and the boulders could be removed with dynamite. Several parties have lately examined the ground with a view to In augurating such an enterprise.
