CHICAGO , May 9. Wheat had many friend * today and closed % c higher. Crop damage In California nnd rumors of Argen tine financial troubles cau cd u moderately bullish feeling , but free selling , lower cables und largo norMiwestrrn receipts prevented an ndvnncc. Corn nnd oat closed ! 4o higher , but provisions finished lower all around. In wheat the opening transactions were at a trlflo advance , nnd nfter rallying from % to 4cworked back % c , rallied from % c toic. . cliangod some , ruled firm and closed steady. The market advanced on the California crop damage and the Argentine financial troubles , Jt being supposed that with a panic nt thn latter place wheat shlnmsntr ; would be next to Impossible , owing to the difficulty In negotiating exchange. Cables , howcver.were dull and disappointing and northwestern re ceipts were about twice as large as u year ago. both of which wore factors In checking any further advance. The corn trade was only moderate and fluctuations wcro within a % ® % c range. The feeling was rather bullish. Today's re ceipts wcro only 102 cars and seemed to bu the principal factor that was productive of strength. In oats there was a good trade and n stronger and higher market. The buying wns liberal , and prices , after opening from ' , &c to ' ,4c lilghor , advanced from Uc to 14 c more , but receded from % c to % c and clohed C'Hct. C'Hct.With a decline In prices for live hogs nt the yards , provisions opened weak nnd lower and then fluctuated within n very narrow range during the first hour of the session , with the tendency downward. Later the offerings became more free , the packers sell ing. Shortly before the end of the session there was a partial reaction on a little buyIng - Ing , with the closing steady all around. ISstlmntcd receipts for tomorrow : Wheat , r,0 cars ; corn , 140 cars ; oats , 210 cars ; hogs , 23.000 head. The leading futures rangcdas _ follows ! " "ArtlcUTH. I Otieii. | iiieFi. I Low. | Clone. The shares named are given In the order of their activity , which places Sugar In the lead. This usually mercurial properly wns exceptionally steady today. After n loss of % per cent at the opening on a heavy pressure to sell , the fluctuations during the rest of the day were confined within a 1 per cent limit. Largo blocks of Distilling stock came on the market and there being no support the stock broke l'/6 to 2'/4 per cent. No dc- presslnB rumors were present to account for sales , Iitt ( hero was no particular deslro on the part of any one ta buy the stock and the closing price was within \ \ per cent of the lowest point torched. General Electric opened % per cent higher and then sagged off gradually under steady selling until a dccllno of ! ' / per cent had ben recorded. There wnti some buying of the shares In the late dealings and the cloning prices were % per cent above the lowest. Iteports of rate cutting and the decline In wheat nffectc.1 the grangers unfavorably nnd there were selling orders from the west , based presum ably on these conditions. Burlington & Qulncy was also sold by Boston on the re vival of the rumors touching the decrease In the dividend rate. Ths decline on the day , however , only ranged from U to % Pr cent , the latter In Northwestern. National Lead fell off l'/i per cent In the morning , trading on sales of stock acquired In the belief that a dividend was to bo declared , a rumor to that effect having been circulated some days ago. A rally of % per cent was made In the late traiiEactlons. In the rest of the market speculation was dull and the- change on the day merely fractional. The market closed fairly steady. The bond market was firm on n small busi ness. ness.Tho The Evening Post says : No news of significance to the stock market appeared today , except the announcement of $1,900,000 gold engagements for tomorrow's steamers. This was expected and had no apparent In fluence on prices. All the gold was obtained today by the presentation of government bonds for redemption , which will run the federal gold balance down close to $93,000- 000. The Irritating fact In these operations Is the unsound financial law which compels the treasurer to put these notes again im mediately Into circulation , thus reducing the reserve without reducing the obligations to guard which the reserve wns founded. Thora was n fair average run of stock today. So far this week , compared with last , there has been an Increase of about 3,000 cattle niul 1,000 sheep , whllo receipts of hogs have fallen off fully 5,000 head , The genernl cattle market was tolerably active , with prices as a rule a trine firmer. Receipts were not by any means heavy , nnd there was not such a large proportion of heavy cattle as on the two preceding days , Most of the cattle wore light and medium weights , 1,200 His. and under , nnd this made the trade more lively , as all classes of buyers arc usually anxious for this kind of stock. Dressed beef men , especially , all appeared to have good buying orders , nnd early prices rilled fully steady. Later outside butchers ctarted In to buy light cattle and prices ad vanced Go to lOc In many cases. The heav ier grades were dull nnd no higher. They were In lighter supply , and while the de mand was no bettor they were more easily moved than on Tuesday. Aside from the heavy cattle the market was active nnd strong , and by noon a very fair clearance of all classes of stock had been effected. There were only ten to a dozen loads of cows and mixed stuff In the yards , nnd the market exhibited no new features. Good fat stock was all right , buyers all wnntcd It nnd prices ruled strong. There was not a great deal of the common stuff In the yards , but what there was sold no better. Calves were In very light supply and firmer , nnd the market for rough stock of all kinds wns active and strong. The stocker and feeder trade was decid edly dull. In fact there was scarcely any thing doing. Ynrd traders' supplies were larger than they needed , and they were con sequently very Indifferent buyers of the fresh offerings , especially as the demand from the country was somewhat slack. Prices got too high to suit country dealers , and they are evidently waiting for.n . decline. Prices wcro off fully n dlmo today.
