NEW YORK. May 4. H. G. Dun & Co.'s
weekly tr&4 revtetv tomorrow will say : A
iwlnt of encouragement U the b * vy baying ;
of wool , amounting to G.492,600 pottnds for
the week at the three chief markets , against
4.CG1.000 poutids for the corrwpondltig week
lest year , anil In April the sates were 21-
88S.95S pounds , ngalnit 10.998,950 pounds
lat year. As these sales have for years
been In steady relation to the entire con
sumption of wcol , It Is fair to Infer that ,
In spite of the stoppage of some Important
works , and In spite of uncertainties as to
labor and as to legislation , consumption
will continue large , for some weeks at least.
The enormous ' unsold stock of wheat ,
which has made a lower average of prices
In February , March and April than was
ever known In any previous month , has de
pressed May wheat to the lowest point on
record , although western receipts were only
1.0S0.73G busheli , against 2.4SS.050 bushels
last year , and Atlantic exports 1443.2S5
bushels , against 1,515,910 bushels last year.
The decline for spot has been slight , with no
change for July. Corn yielded a fourth of a
cent , exports falling suddenly below , while
western receipts were nearly double last
year's , and pork products were lower.
The most encouraging sign Is the marked
decrease In the liabilities of firms falling ,
which were only J1.44S.144 for the last week
of April , and for four weeks JS.722,703 , of
which $3.722.220 were of manufactures and
$4,644,367 of trading concerns. The amount
of liabilities at the south was { 2.919.419 ,
against $3,111,032 In the eastern and $2.692.-
237 In the western state. ? . The failures this
week hare been 233 in the United States ,
against 21G last year , and thirty-five in Can
ada , against twenty-seven last year.

NEW YORIv. Mav i. Bradstrect's review
of the state of trade tomorrow will say :
The movement of general merchandise
throughout the country Is smaller ! u volume.
Spring trade Is finished and orders for fall
delivery are , with few exceptions , not meet
ing expectations. Jobbers in leading lines at
most large cities report sales , almost without
exceptions , as of a hand to mouth dirrrlp-
tlon. The extension of the coal and coke
strike , accompanied by riots at Cleveland
and Mesaba , has emphasized the depression.
The Industrial situation , therefore , has
not Improved. Strikes'of Iron are miners ,
among building trades , with an extension of
the coal miners strike and the almost total
cessation of operations in the coka rc .r.i.s ,
liavo swelled the total number of idle in
dustrial workers to fully 215,000. Shut
downs of industrial concerns dependent on
coke or soft coal for fuel are Increasing ,
notwithstanding an attempt at coal opcra-
; lves and operators to get together to ar
range a basis of settlement. The prices
movement tips the scales with IndUn corn ,
oats , cotton , coffee and refined sugar all
ewer and wool and some rarle-
: les of woolens and cotton gocds
lieary , with a marked tendency 'of quota
tions to weaken. Wheat scored its fifth or
Kixth lowest price on record during the crop
year , UO',4 cents at New Vorl : . A rela
tively favorable Industrial report comes from
Detroit , where there are fewer uiiempUyed.
At St. Louis four months flilpments are In
exce * of last j'tjsr. Transactions In wool
have tJacktned und prlcun of mime grades
are weaker.
Stocks of wheat here , in Canada , afloat
for and in Europe during April fell away

NEW YOItK , May 4. llradstreet's review
of the financial situation tomorrow will say :
The slight Increase this wt-tk has btwn at
tended by an Irregular relaxing of the
strength which has been maintained In the
face of the recent dullness. The market
continues to be tllogcther In type , but It
Beems the street has become weary of the
continued waiting for the advent of the Im
provement in business conditions nnd Is more
disposed to take a bearish attltudo In specu
lation. Several circumstances contributed to
Increase this feeling , among which the ship
ment of $5,400,000 of gold to Kurope and tha
unfavorable tenor of weekly railway earn
ings have an Important place. The most
noteworthy event of the week In a specula
tive ? sense is the- apparent abandonment of
the attempt to reorganize the Heading prop
erty without foreclosure. This has not only
affected Heading , but. created fears of n sim
ilar nature in regard to Atclilson and other
companies now in the hands of reorganize .
The result was extreme weakness In all the
bankrupt properties , the movement supple
menting renewed bearish pressure upon the
granger stocks.
Sugar was an exception to the general
tendency of the market. It was manipu
lated vigorously , rising to 109r-4 on the
quasi assurances that the compromise tariff
schedules agreed on by the senate majority
will become a law. Chicago Gas was also
strong and the industrial group as a whole
seemed relatively steadier than the railway
share list , this being" particularly notlce-
aWn on Friday when the whole list was
stronger on the news from Washington
that the democratic senatorial caucus had
determined to push the compromise tariff
measure.
The action of the railroad share list was
influenced by the question of earnings. The
decrease bf $1CO,000 in St , Paul gross rev
enues for the last week of April had an
unfavorable effect , the stock selling from
C3 to Cl8The Burlington statement for
March showed an Increase of J4."OS In sur
plus against a decrease of $647,000 In gross.
This , however , provoked unfavorable com
ment , the stock declining to 77 % , though
a rally to SO followed. The general cplnlon
Is that economics In maintenance cannot
be kept up and that a reduction in the
dividends of granger roads will be neces
sary unless an Improvement In business ap
pears.
Rheumatism Cured In Thrro Dtiyn.
"I have been afflicted all winter with
rheumatism in the back. At times It was
so severe that I could not stand up straight ,
but was drawn over on one side , " says
George A. Mills of Lebanon , Conn. "I tried
different remedies , but without relief , until
about six weeks ago , when I bought a bottle
of Chamberlain's Pain Balm. After using it
for three days , according to directions , my
rheumatism was gone , and has not re
turned since. I have since recommended It
and given It to others , and know they.have
been benefited by Its use. " For sale by
