COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL ricc of Oats Mmlo a Sensational Advance Yesterday , CORN MARKET WAS FAIRlV ACTIVE I'lno Wcntlicr U'HS No lliir to n Very ( lood Drrimml for U'licut Iliislncis Wns < Jtillonlnmtc < l During tlio I'linil Tending. CHICAGO , May J.-pTho price of oats mailo a sensational advance today. The corner In May , which has recently heen dormant , woke up and surprised the shorts. The price , which has for nomu time been hovering nround 33c , took a leap to il7c. Yester day's price at the clopc was 34c , and the advance of IT&c per bu. In one day In an nrtlclo which docs not usually fluctuate moro than 1-1 fin In twenty-four hours was rather a remarkable occurrence. The chlrf engineer rf the deal l 13. Ifcsa , who Is seconded ended by Noble Jones. These two parties are supposed to own all the cash oats In store nnd the great bulk of the contract of the shorts for May delivery. The manipu lators wcro not pushing matters ; the shorts In their anxiety to get out of tlio hole were themselves responsible for today's advance. The condition of the May delivery of oats Is not confined to Chicago alone. May oats Js a scarce article at Milwaukee and St. Louis , and something like a corner In May prevailed In these markets also.Vhlle May oats wcro selling at 35T4c , they could bo bought for July delivery at 30c , The position of shorts In May Is to be Judged from the fact that there are only about 691- 000 bu. of contract oats In store , and there arc supposed to be about 3,000,000 bu. sold ehort. The manipulators relaxed the screws u llttlo at the close and let the price drop back to 3(5&c. ( The line weather was no bar today to a fairly active demand for wheat. It hail a bulge of ? lc In the first forty-five minutes nf the scsilon , and after a slight reaction It had an additional Jump of % c. The tradIng - Ing was quite animated during the latter part of the advance. The opening prices for July were G9c bid. with only u sale or two at that , and much more generally at pDlfcc. It worked gradually up until It struck GOV c. There was n reaction then to f)9c , followed by n speedy bulge to GO'/ic , from which latter point there was another reaction of % c , closing at an advance of Ic above Thursday's last quotation. The pros pective decrease In the visible supply was the solo cause of the bull feeling. The corn market was fairly active during the llrst half hour , when It relapsed Into a quiet state. The market was Ilrm , nppar- fjjtly Influenced only by the strength of. wheat. On n limited amount of trading the price worked up > c from the opening and reacted only yac , closing % c higher than on Thursday. The /provision market was strong without much activity. The scarcity of the offerIngs - Ings moro than the extent of the buying was the principal feature of the day's trade. The Cudahy Packing company wu's the chief buyer of pork. Swift and company un loaded somp of the stuff they had bought yesterday. The hog receipts were only 18- 000 , compared with 20,000 estimated. Re ceipts In the west were also light. The quality of the hogs received hero was said to be poor , which was another cause of un- eaHncss to the shorts. July pork gained uric , closing within Cc of tlio high point of the day. July lard was y.c higher at the close than on Thursday and ribs lOc higher. Estimated receipts for Saturday : Wheat , CO cars : corn , 205 cars ; oats , 160 cars ; hogs , 12.000 head. FRIDAY. May 4 , Receipts so far "lifts " week , compared with last , show very 'ytllu change as to cattle ami sheep , while ln-htgs * there has been an In crease of over 5,000 hoail. Supplies of cattle wcro not very heavy and the market steady to n simile stronger on nearly everything In the beef steer line. The demand was fnlrly good from all sources nml sellers experienced little trouble In dis posing of their holdings. Dressed beef men did the most of the buying ami they seemed moro anxious for the cattle than they have been nny tlmo during the week. Many of the good light ttnd medium weight steers that the killers wcro after sold 5c to lOc better than Thursday , but shippers were not so bullish on the heavier grades. They had to be good tp bring any moro money. Hunt- ncss wns satisfactorily active from the start and by noon nearly everything ut all useful had changed hands. The activity and strength to the market today were due more to the very moderate receipts than to any other cause. So long ns supplies continue light the outlook Is favorable for god prlcss , but the consumptive demand Is not vigorous enough at present to warrant a steady mar ket with anything like liberal offerings. Good cows sold a shade higher today , but the under grades wcro not qnotably Im proved. There was a very good demand and as the supply was , ns usual , light , trade was lively nnd soon over. Calves were offered freely nt prices all of a quarter lower than the llrst of the week , but they were slow sellers at the decline. Good fat bulls , oxen and stags were In very fair demand at firm prices. There , was a very light volume of business In the stacker and feeder line , but It was moro on account of the limited receipts than tor any other reason. Country buyers were all after supplies and regular dealers were also free buyers. Prices wore firmly held on all grades. Good to choice feeders lire quoted nt $3.25 to $3.85 , fair to good nt $3 to 53.25 and lighter , commoner grades at from 13 down. Representative sales ; DRESSED BEEF. Mny 4.-The American Wool and Cotton Reporter says of the wool market : "We have had u very cjulet market , with less do.ng than during the previous week. Prices , how ever , remain linn nnd unchanged. Manufac turers appear to have assumed a uniting nttl- tude , pending the Html settlement of the tariff. The only mills which have continued to buy wool of late have been the Arlington and Pa cific , nnd they have taken less since our last report than previously. The repoi t that a specific commission of l' ( , per cent on terrlloiy wool hail been generally broken down Is denied by the leading Huston commission merchant ? . The great seaiclty of fleeces renders the move ment In them uninteresting. Prices , however , are firm. Arrivals of California wool have been quite liberal the past week. New Idaho wools In small lots are arriving , also Dakota , Wyoming nnd Colonnlo wools In tmalKiiuantltles.
