A public reception was given yesterday
afternoon by the directors of the South
Omaha Hospital amociatlon at the hospital
on Twenty-fifth iitreet. A large number of
South Omaha's best citizens called between
the hours of 5 and 5 o'clock , and many
were hward to express themselves as being
surprised In finding that such comfortable
quarters had been arranged by the a m > cla >
tlonUpon
Upon entering the ground floor reception
room the visitors were met by the ladle *
who have worked incessantly to organize
the association. They are Mrs. Denny Al-
berry. Mrs. John C. Carroll. Mrs n. H.
nickard , Mrs H. M. Atherton , Mrs. Dr.
Berry , Mrs. B. r. Carpenter , Miss Maggie
Pollard * Mrs Dr. Ensor. Mrs. Claud Tal-
bott , Mrs Ed Munshaw. Mrs J M Fowler ,
and Mrs. S E
Hyatt. The reception com
mittee served the vlnltors with coffee and
light refreshments They wore then shown
through the apartments on the second floor.
The ladles had arranged everything very
tastily. Flowers and plants were placed in
every available spot and the rooms were
as clean and tidy as one will see in a well
regulated household.
When this building was leased the agree
ment was that the Associated Charities
would use the ground floor and the second
floor would be used bj the Hospital associa
tion. At the head of the stairway in the
froiu of the building is a good-sired recep
tion room On the north of this is a small
bedroom , which has one bed. The first room
west of this one is rather large and con
tains three bfdfc The rear b-d-oom to
the wes.t is supplied with two beds and the
kitchen is to the fcouth of this apartment.
In the rear of the kitchen is the bathroom
The whole arrangement Is very convenient
and the ladles feel very proud of the result
of their efforts. Rev. J H. McDevItt has
been very active In assisting the ladies to
organize the association and Is deserving
of much credit for his work.
Mr Edward McBnde has charge of the
Associated Charities department and Mrs
S E Hj-att is the matron of the bonltal. .
The association is now readv to receive
patients and all it lacks Is sufficient fundb
to carry the project through It Is some
thing that has been badly needed In South
Omaha for a long time , and it is the opinion
of the directors that tie people will now
take hold and give the enterprise the sup
port it deserves.
lloiL of u J"ir < bug.
Fire was discovered in the building occu
pied by Behreman & Bugge on Twenty-fifth
street , south of N , about 3 o'clock jesterday
morning. OHicT Emerlck turned in the
alarm and the firemen were soon at the
scesia. The flremen from the packing
houses also turned out
The place was evidently set on fire as
there was no combustible matter on this
floor and no person had been In the building
after it was closed at C o'clock In the evenIng -
Ing The fire was started on the floor
among the shavings In the rear of the build
ing The flames ran along to the walls on
both sides and were soon to the ceiling P
J Traber has a photograph gallery on the
second floor Mr. Traber sleeps In this
apartment and was aroused by hearing the
crackling of the burning timbers He
sprang out of bed and barely had time to
escape His stock was damaged about
$3DO. He had no insurance AVhen the
flremen reached the scene they promptly
smothered the flames on the ground floor ,
but it was some little time before they
could check the flames on the second floor.
The building was damaged about ? "iOO It
is owned by A. B Ross of Omaha and was
fully Insured. Behreman H Bugge carried
Insurance on their machinery and tools , but
neither were damaged. John Gorman oc
cupies a portion of the ground floor as a
paint shop , but none of hist stock was dam
aged , as the fire was confined to the rear of
the building. F. Boyle conducts a second
hand btore in the building south of the on *
burned and his stock was slightly damaged i
by water
The police will endeavor to locate the
fiend who fired the place. There is a strong
sentiment against firebugs in South Omaha
at the present time and if one should bo
caught the punishment would be apt to be
pretty severe.
Chrlitlan Kniloior Couwrt.

to the end that the NebrasUa Central
might become \\hut the inoorporators of
the omimny most earnestly desired
the outlet for a new trunk lint- which would
open up a new field for Omaha enterprises
PreUdent Stlckney of the Maple Leaf
saw the desirability of tapping the west
tlnotigh Omaha , and wus anxious that his
syt-tem should reach the Nebraska me
tropolis , but the slump In stocks and the
depression In business completely killed the
hope he had entertained of making the
terrrflnuB of his mad nt Omaha
The Nebraska Central olllcials then
opened negotiations \\ltb the Illinois Cen-
tial people , with the result that President
Stuyiesntit rieh and u number of friends
came to Omaha last fall with a view of
examining the terminals of the Nebraska
Central company and Inspecting the course
mapped out. Nothing Mas heard of this
visit of the president of the Illinois Central
to Omaha until yesterday , \\hen n tele

of the Illinois Central , that survejs had
been completed mid that a line would be
built at once from Onawa to Omaha , which
hud been in contemplation for years Th.e
line will probably follow the rl\er to Coun

CHICAGO. May 3 ( Special Telegram to
The Bee. ) Encouiaging progress was made
today toward the establishment of reasona
ble excursion lates by wettern lines The
Union Pacific and Atchlson were represented
at the mass meeting , both lines dedarlng
themselves in favor of conservative action.
General Passenger Agent Lomax of the
Union Pacific wild that his line hud not made
the low rates charged against it Having
been aw ay from h ( adquartTg for tw o vvetki
he wat , not familiar with the rotes which
had been made , but agreed to have his as
sistant here as soon as possible with a com
plete list of all reduced rates Adjournment
was taken to that time , all lines being con
fident that the threatened demoralization
would be averted or very m'uih modified
No action was tal.cn on Immigration mat
ters , thut subject being avoided by common
consent until excursion rates are settled.
An agi foment on the latter may readily
bring about one on the Immigrant question ,
unless the withdrawal of the Wisconsin
Central from the agreement makes it im
possible.
On Mnj 12 the Wisconsin Central will
end its membership In the Western Passen
ger association The notice 1ms not jet
been made public bj the association , there
being a khred of hope that the Wisconsin
could be induced to cancel lln notice of
withdiRwal , but General Piu-senger Agent
Putid uRBBrtod positively today that the decl-
faion of the Wisconsin Central v ould not ba
changed The reason for Its w Ithdrawal
is the defeat of a resolution it propound ,
ruaklng 2 cents a. nillo ratet for parties
of ten or more. This resolution was de
feated , the Wisconsin Central claims , by
the votes of lines which uave quoted 2 cents
and cvun lower rates on every occasion.
