CHICAGO , May 2. Wheat had another
weak ilny ntnl closed > ,4o lower than the day
before. Corn went lt own way , which
look It In nn upward direction , bill It Balned
only He In the end. Oats held firm , and
mo likewise % c higher. Provisions were dull
to Magnatlon , and the dullness was accom
panied by lower prices.
Lower cables and extremely favorable re
ports from the agricultural bureaus of sev
eral mates with regard to the present con
dition of the winter wheat caused great
weakness In wheat at the opening. In half
nn hour from the start July , which closed
nt GDc , was down to COc , and May had
worked off to GT'/ic , against G7TiC. ! The
market opened rather tame , although weak ,
and the trading was only moderately active
during the decline. Foreign news continued
bearish and the settlement of the ( treat
Northern strike , which , It was argued , would
Increase the rccolptu of wheat at Minneapo
lis , and Duluth , was also a factor. Not
withstanding the repeated assertion that
Chicago Is out of line with other markets
and wheat Is too high , Armour & Co. sold
today 1GO.OOQ bn. of ordinary No. 2 spring
wheat at Ic over May. Heavy clearances
and a good business In cash caused n re
covery of ' ,40 In July , while the price held
around G9',4c ' until near the close , when a
fresh batch of selling orders sent It down
to from GSc to G9V6c , where It closed.
Corn opened easier on account of the
weakness In wheat , but soon recovered the
tone and pursued an Independently firm
course during the remainder of the session.
Trade was light and of n local specula
tive character. This opening price for July
was 38c , against US c at the close. J.
( \ Schwartz was a buyer of July on an
advance and up to 39c. Tim closing weak
ness In wheat caused corn to lo o a trifle
of Us day gain , and left July at Sc and
May at ST' c.
The oats market was moderately active
and firmer. Early In the session quite
n fair amount of business was transacted ,
principally In July. The market fell off
bomcwliat toward the close , but prices then
Rliowcd an advance of about % c over yes
terday's closing.
Provisions were Inactive. Compared with
last night , pork Is 20e loirer and lard and
ribs lOc lower.

Receipts of cattle and sheep were light ,
the three days' s'lipply being lighter than for
thn first three days of last week by about
1,200 cattle and -100 sheep. There was n
liberal run of hogs , 2,000 more so far thlH
week than last.
Iluslncss was satisfactorily lively In the
cattle yards today and most anything In the
hcef ulcer line could find a purchaser nt n
lOc advance. Other markets reported light
receipts and stronger prices and the limited
offerings hero enabled sellers to keep this
market In line. There were some pretty
good heavy cattle here , but most of the light
and medium weight steers were rather com
mon , and when this fact la taken Into con
sideration the market was n very natlsfac-
tory One , at least to the selling Interests.
Shippers and exporters were good buyers ,
but the most active Inquiry appeared to
come from the dressed beef men. The move
ment was free throughout and some time be
fore noon trading was practically over.
The half a dozen loads of cows and mixed
stock here sold fully as well as on Tues
day , If not a trllle better. When supplies
are so light , however , comparisons ore dif
ficult. Good to choice fat cows and heifers
were picked up quickly at good strong prices ,
but sellers had to hunt buyers for the com
moner grades. The calf market did noi
appear overly supplied , but It was weak
with a lower tendency. Hulls , oxen und
stags commanded about steady prices.
In stackers and feeders there was not n
great deal going on. The demand from al
sources , however , was very good and as
neither fresh nor stale offerings were op
pressively large prices were firmly held.
Good to choice feeders are quoted at $3.23 ©
3.S5 , fair to good at $3.0003.25 , and lighter ,
commoner grades at from $3 down. Repre
