CniCAOO , April 26. Wheat at the close it the dny'B market Bhowcil very little change from Its prlco at thu corrcHpomllng time yen- tcnlay. Such chntiKe as there \vns In In the ivny of Improvement. The line , ( -rowing weather , which IB brlnf-lnt * favorable croi bulletins from the country , cnuseil weakness It the start. Later It became a mnttcr only of how wheat could bo transferred from May to July for the Html arbitrament of the 1SO.T-9I seasons. Corn was weak and closei Vic lower. Kvcn oats , which arc tied tip for May , did not get Into an active state ol nervousness. The crowd watched anxiously hut did little business. Provisions , shorts bought , enough on a dull market to add lOe to July pork , Co to May lard and ribs 2'i.o lower. The elevator people were the most conspic uous spreaders In wheat. Fresh trailing was for the most part done In July. The market closed In a state of scml-stagnatlon. The corn market was dull and featureless. The tendency was In the direction of lower price , but Vic marked the extent of the fluctuations. The lower prices of the day were made at thn close. Oats started firm , and for a while It looked as If yesterday's lnJij'o was Rolns to be added to , but after a 8iitr.ll advance the market gradually declined. The canli market was weaker , owing to liberal ofTcrltiKS and ex pected large arrivals for tomorrow , and this , with < | Ulto free offerings from scalpers who filled up yesterday , were very forward In creating an easier feeling. Tow.ird noon the market rallied. The later trading was rather limited and prices fluctuated but little. Provisions were strong although very dull. The receipts at the yards today were only 17,000 head , and only 10,000 are expected tomorrow. That was at the bottom of the firm fooling. The packers generally , how- e\er , reported cash lard much easier to buy than It had been for the past three months. Choice cash lard could be purchased at the May price , and more of It was offered than was wanted at that. It has hitherto sold readily at. a premium over May. liatltnatud receipts for Friday : Wheat , JOO cars ; corn , 300 cars ; oats , 200 cars ; hogs , 10,000 head. The speculation today In stocks was dull except for the tradIng - Ing in Sugar. In the shares of the American Sugar Hcllnlng company the dealings were very heavy , a purchasing movement having been developed at the opening which was continued In force to the close , the last sale being made within % per cent of the best lirlco recorded. St. Paul led the railway list In point of activity , being In 'fact the only stock of this group In which the trans actions exceeded G,000 shares. It was sold jy London during the morning , and a local jcar made n small drlvo at It In the after noon , but succeeded only In sending It down % per cent , of which % per cent was recov ered. Burlington & Qulncy lost % per cent and Northwestern and Rock Island each % ) er cent. Distilling was bought on favorable Washington advices , It being stated that the avenue bill would not bo modified so as to ticrease the duty on spirits. Chicago Gas was remarkably steady , fluc- ; uatlng within a limit of % per cent. The trading In the rest of the list was very light , and except for the' specialties changes In prices were Insignificant. On sale of 100 ihnres Cordage preferred broke 3 per cent ; Minneapolis & St. Louis declined 1 % per cent and Louisville & Kashvlllo 1U per cent. The rest of the list shows only fractional differ ences from yesterday's closing figures. In the late trading the market was generally weak on a small business and closed heavy. The bond market was depressed during the greater portion of the day and closed rather weak. The Evening Post says : Judging by today's market one might suppose that the : arIIT controversy at Washington rested on the sugar schedule. In other words. Wall street has believed that the Sugar trust's ohhy , whose failure to accomplish anything n the house made them the laughing stock of tholr callous martyrs , has played every conceivable card In the other house of con gress and has not wasted Its month of se cret subcommittee dickering. This belief , well or 111 founded , Is the solo basis of such a movement as today's In Sugar stock. Arrivals today were light , only 120 cars nil told. Koei'lpls so fur this week , com pared with hist , show a doorcase of 1,000 cattle , 5,000 hogs and 5,300 sheep. The fat callTu market wan higher , but nol at nil excited. Favorable reports from the e.ist and the very limited supply enabled sellers to get about 10 per cent more for their holding ! ' , and there was a free move incut on this basis. Offerings Included scarcely any heavy beeves , as shippers have learned to avoid Thursday with their heavy cattle on account of the usual lark of out side competition on that day. The dressed beef men , however , wore all wanting sup plies and bought freely at the advance. Hood 1,174-11) . sfeers sold up to $3,85 , and only fair stuff weighing very llttlo over 800 Ibs. brought ? 3.GO and there was little of any consequence had to sell under that figure. Owing to the absence of good heavy cattle , the top was ? 3.)5 ! ) for a bunch of very fair l,30S-lb. beeves. The strength developed was apparently duo largely to the light supplies and the general torn.1 to the trade was not overly confident. Cows sold very generally In Thursday's notches , the good stuff strong and the com mon weak. There were nol over a dozen loads on sale , and they soon changed hands. The supply of calves continues rather liberal and while thcr * Is a fair demand prices are easier and the feeling weak. Hough stock of all kinds was In good request at fully steady prices. The market for stackers and feeders was rather quiet , more on account of the limited offerings than on account of n slack demand. Prices ruled linn for all suitable grades and all classes were readily salable at full strong prices. Hood to choice feeders arc quoted at from $ .1.10 to $ a.Si ! , fair to good at from J2.75 to $3. and lighter , commoner grades at from $2.75 down. Provisions closed strong Thursday and advices from Chlcaf-o were very favor able this inurnliif * . There was a fair shipping and speculative demand , but the most active Inquiry came from local packers , and as a result trade opened out early and active at prices all of a dime higher than Wednesday. The fair to good hogs of all weights sold early largely at $5.05 to $5.10 , with some of the best loads both heavy and light ut $5.12Vi. The filling of urgent orders and n slight weakening in provisions caused a sag for a time , but It was of short duration , and the market closed up Just about as strong as H opened. The cause of the trouble dates hack two years nnd Is the outcome of some lll-fcdlng. Two years ago William Colson went to the residence of Charles Dooluy and engaged board.
