CHICAGO , April 2G. Shorts In the oat

The price advanced lUc a bushel over th

lillon , It will bo neon that the Hie ndvnnc
| K something phenomenal. It was all du
lo the fact that an old nnd experience !
peculator named Htss recently made i
treat dcol of money Bellini ; wheat short ant
has Invested the whole of It on the lom
llde of the market. He Is etc Jit'd with hav
UiK made Rnywhere from > iflO.OOO to $ 00,00 <
> n the decline In wheat , ami has added that ti
i former good sized pllo and Invested It ul
> n the long side of oats. There arc onlj
bout GOO.OOO bit. of contract oats In store
Hid there Is supposed to bo something like
1,000,000 or 4,000,000 bu. sold short for Maj
Scllvery. Mr. Hess Is the owner of the
100,000 bu. In store , and also owner of the
suntracts the short sellers have made. He
can , of course , put his own price on the
( .000,000 bu. to 4,000,000 bu. that cannot be
Jioiifiht except from him. Nat Jones Is sup-
Jioscd to be on the same side of the market
IIM Mr. HCS.V , and while not being credited
with being the possessor of wealth he has
Konc Into a deal where a little money goes
n long way. There was a good deal of ex
citement and a large crowd dealing In oats ,
nnd the chief manipulator stood In the mid
dle of the crowd nearly all the time , bidding
Jlay up to 33'ic , whllo July oatn were only
rule. In the end lo bid May oats up to 34Uc ,
vhlle July was only worth : ! 0&c at the close.
An Interesting tight Is now on , and the
( ( peculators say the advance today Is only
the beginning of It.
Wheat closed ' /c higher for May , and ' . c
Jower for July. Soon after the opening May
wheat advanced easily He , to 58'X.c ' , and
July /4c , to C0c. Soon the ofllclal weather
report showed n mere trace of rain In Cal
ifornia , and at the same time buying orders
came In from there , the result of which was
another advance , which did not stop until
] % c had been added. A notable feature of
the later advance was the narrowing of the
spread bctwefn May and July , which , from
S 1-lCc and 2Uc at the start , contracted to
J'Jic. The market remained firm to the end ,
after reacting about He from the extreme
lilgh point.
The corn market was firm , but not very
nctlve , and Its strength appeared to cotne
largely from sympathy with the advance In
oats. The market had a moment or two at
the opening price , whore there was a general
advance to 39c , closing at an Improvement
of He over yesterday.
The provision market was weak for a
short time near the beginning of the sea-
hlon , but strengthened with the Improve
ment In wheat , corn and oats. Pork closed
30c higher than yesterday , lard lOc , and ribs
lOc.
Estimated receipts for Thursday : Wheat ,
90 cars ; corn , 210 cars ; oats , 233 cars ; hogs ,

NEW YORK , April 25. Chicago Gas was ,
of course , the great feature of the share
speculation on the Stock exchange today.
Plenty of rumors had been circulated as to
the adverse effect of the Gas trust decision
In Illinois. It was .stated that an Injunc
tion restraining payment oj dividends would
be applied for at once , nud granted ; that the
forfeiture of the charters of the several com
panies In the trust would follow , and that a
total disruption of the Chicago Gas would be
the outcome. As a consequence heavy blocks
of stock were thrown upon the maiftjt at the
opening , the first price being 04 , which was 2 %
par cent below yesterday's closing figure ,
and 3,000 shares were sold between that
price and G3 before the Stock exchange offi
cial reporters could catch up with thu quota
tions. This was the lowcU point touched ,
and when it was reached buying orders were
uncovered , believed to be for the account of
Insiders , who had sold at the high prices of
last week. These purchases of the stock
had a steadying effect and checked the selling
movement. As a result there was a rally
of 1 % to 6414 , and , although there were quite
a few free sales thereafter , the panicky feelIng -
Ing was absent , and the lowest figure sub
sequently recorded was C3 % , the final sale's
being at a recovery of % , or 2 % below the
last price yesterday. Oniclals of the com
pany profess to feel no alarm at the situa
tion. They scout the forfeiture of the char
ter of any of the combined companies.
The stock market generally was surpris
ingly firm in view of the disturbing In
fluences. During the morning the only
other shares which appeared In the transac
tions to any extent were Sugar , Distilling ,
St. Paul and General Electric. St. Paul was
strong on London buying , and rose % per
cent. Sugar was sold moderately , and after
nn advance of H , reacted 1 per cent. Dis
tilling receded % , but quickly rallied , and
during the afternoon sold up ' ,4 , losing %
per cent In the final dealings. General
Electrlo lost only % per cent and then ad-
x-anced 1 , closing within % of the top flgurss.
During the afternoon some few of the spe
cialties recorded declines , but the market
In the main was firm to strong on a small
volume of business , and closed firm , with
nil the active stocks higher than yesterday's
closing , except Chicago Gas and Reading ,
which Is % per cent lower. The railway
and miscellaneous bond market was a trlflo
easier during the morning , became firmer
In the afternoon , but closed Irregular.
The Evening I'ost sayj ; "Such activity as
thjre was In today's stock market came soon
after the opening , and centered chiefly in
Chicago Gas. The decision of the Illinois
attorney general to open suit against the
combination had the anticipated effect , and
[ ho prlco promptly broke 3 points. Else
where the market's tendency was clearly
( Inn. "
The Evening Post's financial cablegram
Trom London says : "There was distinct Im
provement today. English rails were chiefly
bought on favorable trafllc returns , but ths
speculative markets also were better , Includ
ing Americans , wlilcli show fractional gains ,
closing steady. Silver was up to 23d on
Indian buying , said to be speculative on the
belief that the mints will reopen. This
rumor depressed rupee paper. The Indian
council sold CC lakhs of rupi > : B at rates rang
ing up to 13 19-32(1. The amount offered
tor next week haw bacn Increased to CO lakhs.
Seventy-one thousand pounds of gold were

WEDNESDAY , April 2G.
Supplies of nil kinds Were comparatively
light today , and no fur this week , compared
with last , receipts bhow n decrease of1,400
cattle , 3,400 hogs and 1,600 sheep.
There were only 79 cars of cattle all told
received today anil the quality was fair
and that's about all. The demand was bet
ter from all sources , as favorable eastern
advices encouraged shippers and exporters ,
while the smallncss of the supply caused
some anxiety on the part of buyers for local
houses. Prices were a trlllo uneven , but
on an average Cc to lOc better than Tuesday ,
the good light steers showing the most nnd
the rough heavy cattle the least Improve
ment. The movement wns free throughout
and by noon there was little but odds and
ends remaining untold.
Cow stuff constituted but an Insignificant
proportion of the offerings today and there
was no quotable change In prices. There Is
an active demand for good fat cows nnd
heifers , but the common and canning grades
are In rather Indifferent request at rather
easier figures. Calves have been coming In
rather too freely for the good of the market
and prices today ruled fully 25c lower than
the close of last week. The market for
rough stock of all kinds was just about
steady.
There Was more life and n better tone to
the stacker nnd feeder trade today. I'rlces
ruled stronger , but hardly quotably higher ,
lloth regular dealers and outsiders were
good buyers and thu supply was pretty well
cleaned up at the close. Good to choice
feeders are quoted nt from | 3.10 to J3.73 ,
fair to good at from $2.75 to $3. and lighter ,
commoner grades at from $2.75 down. Hep-
resentatlvu sales :
Diinssno BEEF.
HOGS Today's receipts fell fully 2,500
short of last Wednesday's run , but
this circumstance failed to Infuse any
strength Into the market. While there wan
some activity on the part of speculators
there was no inquiry whatever from ship
pers , and local packers were practically the
only buyers. They were not slow to take
advantage of the situation und as a result
prices ruled 5c to lOc lower than Tuesday's
uvorago trade. There were Bales of com
mon light mixed stuff at $4.00 and $ I.92V ,
ami a few very good light butcher loads sold
up to $5.02V6 and $5.05. The big bulk of the
fair to good hogs of all weights sold nt $ I.U3
nnd $5 , and on the close , which was strong ,
$5 was the popular figure ,
trading was mostly nt from
on last Wednesday $5.10 and
the big bulk of the offerings ,
