ritlCAOO , April 2l.--Aftcr verging upon a
panic , whcnt today closed firm , with a gain
) f ! 4c compared with the closing prlco of the
previous day. Holders of thu cash article
tat back and demanded a premium of Ic
jer bu. over May for ordinary N'o. 2 Chi-
ago spring , and got their pride , while the
ipccnlallve holders were clmsliiK around the
) lt for buyers at the lowest price on record ,
jorn was affected for a time by the weak-
) css In wheat , but also Hhared In Hit late
Jrmncss and closed with a gain of % c. The
May shorts In oats had to suffer for their
temerity In view of the low stock. As soon
t the opening signal was given the wheat
pit. responded with orders to eell May ,
Milch went al from C7c to f > 7'iC. ! Trading
r.-as general for a moment at the lowest of
UIOKO prices. At 57ViO the decline since the
clofo yesterday was % c and It was He lower
than the previous low price on record for
SIny delivery. The decline was attributed
to unusually largo exports and reports of
rains In thu west. Including the shipments
frnm this country , 2,000,000 bu. were put
illoat last week In excess of the estimated
needs of the Importing nations. There was
aothltig In the morning's news to encourage
buyers to tnko hold even at the extremely
low price. . The prlco Itself , however , was a
potent argument with the shorts , who took
hold freely and by their purchases put the
value up to GSc In the course of half an
hour. Desldes the prospective loss of 'M-
1)00.000 ) bu. ol wheat from drouth In Cali
fornia , the bulls tried to sustain their droopIng -
Ing courage by a contemplation of the
clearance for the last 21 hours , which
amounted. In wheat and Hour , to about
700,000 bu. , Including what went from
the four principal Atlantic ports and
New Orleans. The bulls failed to buy any
wheat. That was left to the shorts , and
buying of that character was sufficient to
sustain prices In the near neighborhood of
fiSc during the greater part oft the cession.
Late In the session It was discovered that
there were buyers for some cash wheat.
The misfortune of the speculators was the
opportunity of the users of the cash grain.
Mid the latter went n round among the
elevator men , but found there was no panic
among the latter class of holders , and that
No. 2 spring could only be bought by payIng -
Ing Ic over the May price for It , and hard
spring was held nt a premium over the
July price. Then some anxiety to get hold
of some of the pit wheat manifested Itself
and caused the prlco to advance to BS14 for
May. July sold at C0c.
The business In corn was rather light ,
when some mere light was reflected to the
trade by the rally In wheat. The receipts
were light and the exports liberal , and for
tomorrow ninety cars , are all that are
looked for.
Oats were easier earlier In .sympathy with
the other markets , but later In the session
were quite strong. Only a small business
was transacted.
The provision market was dull and fea
tureless. Hog receipts were light and pork
and ribs improved a trifle as the result of
the day's business , whllo lard closed at a
blight decline. Hog receipts were only
13,000 head.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
35 cars ; corn , SO cars ; oats , 140 cars ; hogs ,
20,000 head.

NEW YORK , April 21. Tlio long expected

on again today. At the start the attack on
prices met with a somewhat unexpected
check , for this was 'settlement day * In Lon
don and the speculators on that exchange
appeared to have had extended short nc-
counts In 'Americans' to cover. The foreign
support so far steadied prices for stocks
with nn International market that the local
operators for the decline were left to con-
centrnto their-efforts on stocks not traded
In by London. This meant a sharp decline
In several Industrial stocks ; these Interest
ing market favorites whoso solitary advance
a week ago waa the signal for n break In
the general list. "

TUESDAY , April 21.
There was a good average Tuesday's run
of stock , but supplies for the two days com
pared with the flrnt two days of last week
show a decrease of 3,500 cattle , 700 hogi and
400 sheep.
Cattle receipts were scarcely half as heavy
as on last Tuesday , but last Tuesday's re
ceipts were exceptionally heavy. The qual
ity of the offerings today was very fair am !
buyers had little came for' complaint on that
score. Trade was far from satisfactory.
There was a llstlessncss about It that made
sellers uneasy. Lower markets east madi
all classes of buyers either Indifferent or
positively bearish , and on nn average prices
ruled Co to lOc lower than Monday. Every
body seemed to want the good light cattle ,
and such commanded very nearly steady
prices , while some that were not so good
did not soli a great deal , If any , lower.
When It came to the medium weight and
heavy cattle It was hit and miss , but gen
erally lower. Shippers and exporters were
after supplies , but wanted to take off a dime
and In most cases cattle weighing over 1.1RO
or 1,200 Ibs. were fully that much off. It
was a dull , dragging market , and there were
a few cattle still unsold nt the close.
Gown were , as usual , In very limited sup
ply and prices ruli > d pretty nearly steady.
Some of the best may have sold a shade
firmer , but there was a decidedly weaker
feeling on the commoner grades. The mar
ket for calves was Just about steady , and
prices ? or rough stock generally showed
no particular change , .
In stockers and feeders there was no no-
tlecaldo Improvement. Yard traders' Mip-
pllcs wore more than ample for the very re
stricted country orders and tellers had to
accept shaded prices for the fresh'receipts
In most cases. Coed to choice feeders ore
quoted at $3.1003.60 , fair tOgood at $2.7CQ ( )
3.00 and lighter , commoner ( grades at from
$2.75 down. Representative sales :

HOGS The market was lower , not so
nucli lower early , but before the close buyers
nul pounded out a pretty liberal decline.
Neighboring markets were lower , the supply
vas fairly liberal and there was no outside
and but llttlo speculative demand. Local
lackers wore all very pronounced bears ,
. 'ulr to good hogs .sold early largely at $5.05
mil $5.10 or aboul" { to lower than Monday.
Speculators paid as'hlgh as $5.in , Tlie mar-
tet weakened fast on inore unfavorable news
from both hogs and provisions In Chicago
mil H was not very long hsforo the popular
jil | was $5 nnd tllat was the limit. Most
of the late sales we.ro nt that figure or quot-
