CHICAGO , April 19. Fnvornblc crop re
ports caused weakness at both ends o [ llio
nhcat market luilay , and May closed with n
loss of % c. The very large clearances and
California drouth caused tlio firm spot In
the middle of tliu session and preventrd a
marked decline. Corn wan generally firm for
Jlny and weak for July , the former , In the
MM ! , losing % c , end the latter about lie.
J'loviBloim opened firm and closed weak at
from 22tic to 27l4o decline for the day III
jiork.
The continued favorable reports of grow
ing crops from every state started the marKet -
Ket for that article rather weak at about
yesterday's closing prices. Sales wcro In
the majority for the time , but the number
of both buyers and sellers was very limited.
J''Jiicttiatloiis ' for nn hour were confined be
tween 69c and C0 6e for May and ( ! lTs < - '
and filc for July. The export clearances
from Dnltlmore amounted In wheat and flour
to about 300.000 bu. On that May ad
vanced to COc and July to C2c. The total
clearances from the four principal Atlantic
ports amounted to over SOO.OOO bu. In wheat
and Hour , and that was the cause of an
other slight additional advance. May selling
up to from CO'Ac to ( iOVic , and July to GSVfce.
The edge wore off about an hour before the
closo. when May dropped to fi'.ie ' and July
to ( ! U',4c. The market clos".0 weak at the
lowest prices of the day.
Corn opened easy atto below Its value
ni tile close of the previous session. H
ruled rather weak for a time , but firmed
ngaln and ngaln weakened with \\heat. Mod
i-rule buying caused the firmness. After a
"ir range May closed midway between the
il.iv's ( op and bolloni figures.
n.itH wns ciulct and steady. Prices had
nn'y ' ' 4c range.
The feature of the early trading In pro
visions was the buying by Catlln of about
J .100 tierces of lard , which were sold a few
moments later at n fie higher price , and
( aid at that time to have been put out for
Wright. After that und some other short
K nff had been covered the early boom col
lapsed. It was pressed quite heavily lo-
v.-ards the end , causing weakness.
K.-itlmated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
75 cars ; corn , 106 cars ; oats , 173 cars ; hogs ,

Speculation In HID Share .Marlict Yesterday
Wur lcclilc < lly ICrnitlc.
NEW YOUK , April 19. The course of
speculation In the share market today was
decidedly erratic , rallies and reactions suc
ceeding each other In rapid order , hut , owing
to the prevailing dullness , the fluctuations
were , as a rule , kept within narrow limits.
Most of the huslness , especially during the
morning , was done in the Industrials , while
St. Paul led the railway list In the later
transactions. Strength was Imparted to the
market at the opening by the receipts of
buying orders from London , which Included
St. Paul , Louisville , Union Pacific and
Northern Pacific preferred. The first prices
made were generally a trifle higher thnn
yesterday's closing figures , Chicago Gas helng
the exception. It opened ' 4 per cent lower ,
but quickly sold up 1 % per cent. The gen-
; ral market advanced a fraction on moderate
buying and sagged oft as soon as the pur
chasing orders had been filled. Delaware &
Hudson broke 1 % per cent , and the other
shares % to % per cent , the latter In New
York Central , which was depressed by
rumors of a trunk line rate war and of a re
duction of wages on some of the roads In the
system. Both of these reports were denied ,
and In the latter dealings the stock recovered
all but % per cent of the decline.
Sugar , which had risen % per cent In the
early trading , fell off % per cent on a small
bear raid. The lower figures for this stock
attracted buyers , nnd the old story to the
effect that refined sugar will receive more
protection than Is given In the existing bill
was revived , with the result that un advance
of 1 ! per cent was made , of which 1 per cent
was lost in the later dealings , the closing
being at % per cent advance on the day.
Shortlv nftor 11 o'clock the cenoral list rp-
ceded % to 1 per cent , New Jersey Central
leading the decline , which was , however ,
checked before noon , nnd n sharp upward
turn scored. In which Edison Electric was
prominent , scoring a gain of 1V& per cent.
Chicago Gas , which lost % per cent of the
early advance , rose 1 % per cent , mid Sugar
1 per cent. During the early part of the
afternoon the Industrials were quite strong ,
Cordage common advancing 1 % per cent ;
Tobacco , 1V4 per cent , nnd the rest of the
list n fraction , except Cordage preferred ,
which made sonio rapid and big turns , sell
ing off ZVi per cent to 43 , the next sales
being at 47 and 48 respectively then fol
lowing a break to 43.
Sugar rallied % per cent , nnd then lost
1 per cent , Chicago Gas reacting % per cent
and Cordage % per cent. The railway list
wan well held and during the last hour Im
proved gradually , closing fairly firm , but
very Irregular , compared with yesterday's
final figure. The railway bond market was
weak during the greater part of the day , but
closed firm.
The Evening Post says : The rise In Paris
exchange on London and the simultaneous
fall of % per cent In our own rate for de
mand sterling shows pretty clearly how far
the placing of this week's ? 40,000,000 French
loan was a factor In the recent International
gold movement. Since specie shipped this
week will hardly bo nvnl/ablo / for subscrip
tion purposes , there Is ground for the belief
that our exports Saturday will be small. So
Tar as the movement was nffected by this
Paris loan , It has been altogether natural.
Probably last week's exports of gold from
liero represented withdrawal of English cap
ital almost unleiidnblo In this money market
nnd Its transfer to Paris ugulnst London
subscriptions. The bulk of subscripting ,
meantime , have doubtless been made up ns
usual among the French Investors. In the
closing hour an Improvement was Inaugu
rated In which almost the entire list except
Sugar participated. The market closed fairly
firm.

SPRINGFIKI.D , 111. . April 10. The United
States weather bureau report for the state
for the week ended Bays :
The temperature of the past seven days
has been below normal throughout the
state. In Chicago the dally deficiency
amounted to seven degrees ; Springfield and
Cairo three degrees. Frost occurred and
In some localities Ice formed. The per
centage of sunshine was below the season
able amount ; .precipitation for the week
was generally 'below the seasonable aver
age , and was badly distributed. The rains
of the Sth and 9th appear to have been
general , and wore nenellclal to all crops.
More rain , 'followed by warm , sunshiny
weather , would advance' all vegetation
rapidly. Heports indicate that wheat ,
owing to recent rains , Is rapidly recover
ing from the effects of the late freeze , nnd
now promises much better than was antici
pated. Warmer weather would greatly
benefit this crop. liesowliiR outs Is pro
gressing. Oats wcro not Injured , making
but little growth , owing to continued cool
weather. Meadows nnd pastures , while
greatly benefited by the lute rains , are
growing slowly. A slight change Is re
ported In the condition of fruit. Hye Is
generally reported In good condition. A
large acreage of potatoes has been re
planted. The ground Is generally reported
in good condition , nnd plowing for corn Is
now being pushed , some planting already
having been done In the southern division.
Planting will become general In the central
and southern counties during the coming
week if the weather conditions are favor
able.

fiecelpts of cattle were very light today ,
there was a fair run of hogs and the supply
of sheep was the heaviest so far this year
with ono exception. So far this week ,
compared with last there has been u fallIng -
Ing off of some 1,300 cattle and 1,000 hogs ,
whltn nlippn ri-1-nlnls show an Increase uf
nearly fi.OOO head.
The fresh supply of catllo was the small
est In over two months and the iiialliy | as
a rule was not overly good. Thursday Is
never a good day for speculators and they
did little or nothing , but eastern butchers
wcro wanting n few cattle. The principal
demand , however , came from the local
dressed beef men. They wanted supplies ,
and evidently wanted them badly , as they
went out early and stayed till everything
was sold. Competition was netlvo enough
to advance prices fully lOc on thn light
and medium weight cattle that everybody
wanted , but the heavy cattle sold little If
any better than Wednesday on account of
the limited shipping and export demand.
It was a good , strong , active , healthy market
throughout , and an early clearance wna
made.
Fair to good butchers' cows were In very
good demand at stronger prices , but Un
common and canning grades showed no
Improvement. Offerings were light , the
movement free and biiidnefs soon over.
Calves sold at just about steady prices
and the market for rough stock was fully
strong.
The stocker and feeder trade was active
and strong as far as It went. Offerings
fell considerably short of the demand and
only a limited number of eattlo changed
hands. Till- full * In fnml utllff until Incintlu
