pnough fluctuations In all the leading mar
kets tod.iy . to satisfy the craving of the
most rcstlcoa scalper. So far as wheat Is
concerned the ultimate result of consider-
nblo excitement and a heavy business was
' . * c Improvement In the price as compared
with Saturday's values. Corn followed
v.-hcat to some extent , but was Independently
unstained by small receipts uml n fair ex
port Inquiry. Provisions were very strong
mill shorts were very nervous. Pork closed
47 > ,4c higher and lard anil ribs arc 25c
higher.
Wheat at the start was weaker and the
market opened with from > ,4c to lie loss ,
the weak cables and reports of rain being
the principal bearish Influences. Offerings
were not very free at the decline , the
trade not caring to sell short much In the
face of the government report tomorrow ,
mid the demand Improved , prices advancing
from lc to lc , cased % c off , changed
name and closed Vic higher for May and
Vic higher for July. The selling today was
by the private wire concerns on reports
of rain In Kansas , advices from Parsons ,
Ol.ithe , Topeka and Wichita reporting rains.
The weather map showed colder conditions
In the west , northwest and southwest , n
little snow In Colorado and heavy rains
In Missouri , Illinois and the Missouri river
valley as far north as Omaha. Oood buying
Blarted early , which caused a sharp rally.
Many of the local operators , while feeling
quite bullish , think the market hoic out
of line with other markets. New York
Is within a few cents of the prices ruling
here. The export clearances were mnuller
mid not favorable for a hull market.
Corn offerings were rather limited , espe
cially around the opening , while the demand
was good. The shipping Intcrrsts were In
clined to purchase and In fact led the buy
ing , the selling being scattered. Opening
trades were at Saturday's final figures and
gradually worked up Ti e , eased off ' c ,
ruled ( inner and closed with a gain of from
% c to % c.
The oats market was quite overrun with
buying orders during the greater part of
the session and only a limited number of
tellers , considerable strength was devel
oped. ,
Provisions were strong and higher. Those
who had sold short on Saturday were made
uneasy by the small run of hogs to start
with. The receipts were only about 25,000
Instead of 31,000 as had been expected , and
when the nervous shorts sought to buy
they could discover very few who were
willing to sell to them. The latest trades
were at or near the best prices of the day.
Pork Is from 45c to 47V c higher ; lard from
25o to 27'/ic up and ribs , 2'c.
Estimated receipts tomorrow : Wheat ,
r > ii cars ; corn , 260 cars ; oats , 1G3 cars ; hogs ,
20,000 head.

STOCKS AND HONDS.
AVcck Opened In Securities with a Very
I'lrni Tone.
NEW YORK , April 9. The week opened
on the Stock exchange with a firm tone
to the speculation nnd In most cases tlio
first prices mode were a fraction above tlio
closing figures of Saturday. During the
morning the trading was fairly active , and
except for some of the specialties , the mar
ket was steady to strong. During the after
noon the volume of business was light and
the dealings were Irregular , the market
closing dull , but fairly steady with a ma
jority of the shares traded in showing an.
avance on the day's transactions. Chicago
Gas was most prominent in the dealings
and was sold sharply at tho. opening on
a report that the decision of the attorney
general of Illinois In the quo warranto pro
ceedings would be against the company.
After a decline of % per cent , supporting
orders were received , resulting In a recovery
of % per cent , followed by a reaction of
\ & per cent and a rally of H per cent , mak
ing a net loss of % per cent.
Sugar wns second In point of activity.
Opening % per cent higher , it sold up 1 %
per cent additional on purchase Induced by
a bollef that probably the lai'Ift bill may not
become H law , on which contingency the
sugar company would make largo profits.
A goodly proportion of tlio buying is said
to have been for Insiders. Later In the
day realizations and a small bear raid
caused a reaction of % per cent , the close
being at a gain on the day of % per cent.
The grangers were only moderately active ,
advancing a fraction In the morning and
reacting during the afternoon , Uurllngton
showing a decline at the close of % per
cent. Hock Island ' ,4 per cent , Northwestern
unchanged for the common nnd 1 per cent
higher for the preferred , and St. Paul made
a gain of % per cent and St. I'aul preferred
% per cent. Thcro was good buying on
lUchinond Terminal third assessment paid ,
the stock advancing % per cent and closing
at the highest point touched. The purchases
wore Induced by reports that the reorgan
ization of the company would shortly be
completed.
The Evening Post says : The noteworthy
general movement of prices lately begun
continued today In the other markets and
hafl as before Its duo Influence on stocks.
Wltc.it was strong In spite of the heavy
speculative realizing , and silver bullion
rallied again In London In the direction
of last week's highest figure. liy all ac
counts tlio oriental demand continues heavy ,
while the supply from transatlantic ports
barely Increases. A rather striking inci
dent of the last month or two has been the
shipment of gold from India and China.
London's receipts of this metal from China
In February and March were -184,000 and
298,000 en mo from .India in March alono.
In the last two weeks , however , since tlio
breaking of the Ilombay panic , a moderate
return movement of gold to India has begun.

Dealers Rcnernlly wcro considerably ills-

liero and of these tlicro wore 90 cars of
cattle. Tlio cattle market WHS nearly ns
much of n surprint ) ns the receipts wore.
Prices ruled from lOc to lfic higher than
Saturday , and It seldom that 2,000 cattle
change hands quicker than they did today.
On account of the favorable tone to eastern
advices shipping and speculative buyers
were In the saddle early and ready for
business. Liberal outside orders and the
smallncss of the supply tnado the dressed
beet men anxious , and taken altogether
sellers found conditions very much to their
liking. The general quality of the cattle
offered was very fair , but there were no
strictly choice beeves here. Oood 1,200 to

and fair to good 1,000 to l.lfiO-lb steers
sold readily at from $3.DO to $3.7C. Fair
to poor stuff and odds and ends went at
from $ .1.40 down , It was a good , strong ,
active , healthy market from start to finish
and by 10 o'clock business was practically
over.
The same activity characterized the trade
In butchers' and cnnncrs' stock , but there
was no quotable advance In prices. Offer
ings Included les than a do/.en loads , and
buyers soon picked them upTho market
for veal calves was llrm and for rough stock
of all kinds active and stronger.
Stockers and feeders were In good demand
and higher. The fresh supply was light and
the pens were by no means crowded with
stale cattle. Itegulur , dealers were nil
good buyers and quite few
a hay-fed west
erns went over the scales at from ? 3.2."i to
$3.55. The feeling on nil sides was linn.

HOOS Receipts todny wore fully l.COO
lighter than on last Monday , and other mar
kets wcro pretty much In the sumo fix.
Otherwise conditions wcro not markedly
different from last week. Sellers again had
the tipper hand and experienced no trouble In
working off their holdings' ' nt a fie to 10 < ; ad
vance. There wus only ono shipper ( Sijnlre )
In the field and speculators were a trlllu shy ,
but the local contingent were nil anxious for
supplies , and the meager offerings changed
hands like hot cakes. One very choice
butcher weight load brought $1.90 , but aside
from this It was practically a J 1.80 and ft.85
market , everything selling within that range ,
buyers paying no attention to weight and
apparently not n great dnal to quality. The
feeling on all sides was decidedly bullish
throughout and the fcharp advance In pro
visions caused a strong , active close. On
Saturday the big bulk of the hogs sold at
$4.75 and a week ago today the trading was'
largely at $4.40 and $4.45. lleprcsontatlvo
