THE OMAHA. DAILY BEE : SUNDAY , tl -/UHUL 8 , JflOl-TWENTY PAGES 15 General Business Improvement 's Still Felt in this Oitj , fAITH OF AN IMPORTER JUSTIFIED llll Order for I'nncy Dry Humid Quickly Taken by III * ttudtninrrn Prices oa HtiiplM Stiffening Hjipldljr At tlin llnnks. Reports concerning general business throughout the country nro very satisfac tory , and nfl usual Omaha IB at the head of the procculon. H Is true that during the first two or three days of April there was HOIIIO slight diminution In the number of buyers In the wholesale district , but the fact Miat business returned to un active basis ns soon an the weather had become moro iigroonblo Indicates that the change was merely a temporary matter. The country merchant ) ! continue to express entire con fidence In their trade , but there Is some llttlo anxiety In regard to the crops , which have given promise of exceptional abundance nil the spring. Most of the country dis tricts nro much In need of rnln nnd unless the soil IB moistened soon It Is feared that crop prospects will bo seriously damaged. A comparison of the first week of April with the corresponding week of last month shown that there has been n remarkable. Improvement In the tone of the jobbing market. Iliiycm are. far moro liberal in tliolr orders nnd seem to have acquired n confidence that was almost entirely lack- 1 Ing thirty days ago. This Is also Indi cated by the largely Increased demand for fancy lines of uvery description. Trade which n month ago was conducted nlong staple lines had branched out and Is now as general ns Is usual nt this tltno. This feature lu marked In the case of linens , for which there Is an active demand. Mnes of damask for which there was practically no sale n month ago arc now meeting with n con.ildcrahlo demand. The expcrlenco of a local dry goods firm furnishes a good Illustration of the new i order of things. A couple of weeks ago they received a heavy consignment of samples of Swiss embroideries and laces. At the time when they were ordered It looked as though such luxuries would bo a drug on the mar ket , but the Jobber had faith In prospects nnd went ahead. The goods only arrived at the custom house last 'week , but in the meantime the Hamplcs had been sent out , and orders are now on the books for moro than one-half of the shipment. The Incident justifies the confidence of the Importer , and shows that the Omaha market has surely reached n healthy basis. Thcro has been a decided tendency to stiffen the market In many staple lines dur ing the week. The expected advances on various lines of cotton goi'ds went Into effect April 1 , nnd the Influence has been felt to a considerable extent. The most marked ad vance has been In the grocery line. In which I hero has been another sharp advance In canned goods and dried fruits. Peaches are quoted from 15 to 23 cents higher per dozen , and the small fruits , such as strawberries , red and white * cherries and gooseberries , have jdvanced from C to 15 cents. The supply of .Xlrled peaches , apricots , plums , etc. . Is nearly exhausted , and the market Is tending con tinually upward. One result of the advance is" that a moro active trade Is springing up nn California prunes , raisins , grapes and currants , which are proportionately cheaper. Sugnr Is stronger , although prices are not quotably higher , except on one or two low I grades. Provisions are stlffer , and advances nro quoted of three-fourths of a cent on kettle rendered lard , and of one-fourth of a cent on side meats and breakfast bacon. Koborson , local manager of It. O , Dun & Co.'s Morcantlla agency. "Thero were fewer coun try merchants In the city during the week nnd consequently sales fell off somewhat from this source. Orders from the outside Increased , however , and the week la reported bettor than fair all around. By the way , the visiting merchants helped trade Immensely during the last few weeks. In one principal line It Is stated GO per cent of the sales were to vls- They bought coyly , but they were a good class of dealers and many of them were now In this market. The experiment proved n miccess , nnd probably next fall It will bo undertaken again. The only draw back to n full realization of the benefits of this method of stimulating trade , asldo from the evil conditions of the limes , Is found In the petty Jealousies existing between com petitors , This market Is now strong enough to nbnndon the puerile practices of small places and competitors should confine their animosities to the legitimate activity which Istfonsldered the life of trade. "At the banks the purse strings are still hold with n tight grip , though money Is by no means scarce. Hankers have not yet fully overcome ; the nervous prostration of 1892 nnd nro timorous to n remarkable de gree. However , no man who offers gllt- odgcd security Is refused and In some quar ters there Is a disposition to ease up on customers and to look ahead cautiously for loans. "A well known banker , referring to the canal meetings and other public gatherings for considering public matters , criticises the tone of the discussion , justly , as I think , when i he Insists that the calamity cry shall bo aban- T doncd. Ilo says Omaha Is In hotter condi tion commercially than any of her com petitors nnd has n bright future before her. Ho says It will help Immediately and Im mensely to Inaugurate the canal enterprise , but ho wants the advocates of that under taking to shout Omaha's advantaged and not proclaim from the house tops her -fortunes or Imr disadvantages. Ho says that when n Kansas City man registers In n New York hotel ho spreads the name of his homo clear ncros * the page , nnd my banker friend thinks Omnhn men flioulil quit apologl7.hu ; nnd bo- tome nggresslvo. "Speaking again on the paramount Idea Tif the canal. It Is proper to say that the enterprise is progresilng , but It should not drug. Citizens who wish to place Omaha on the high road to an Immediate , rapid nnd Hiibiitnntliil growth ought to como forward nnd subscribe the small balance required guarantee the beginning of the onter- Irl e. "Thero nro two great enterprises which .Ihould not bo abandoned or hindered the' eaiml and the union depot. The year 1SD1 jhould see both these assured. " .SNOW , Clll'ltm ' * CO.'S llctiill Trudn Improved-1'lntto ( 'mini Pro ject ( irimlni ; Apnco. Albert Andrlnno , local superintendent for Snow , Church & Co.'s Mercantile agency , Bays : "A slightly Improved retail trade was the natural result of warmer weather dur ing the week , "In wholesale lines there Is llttlo apparent change In the situation. Hoot and shoo men are Hearing the end of their season nnd appear rcuooimbly well satisfied with the business done. In dry goods business Is keeping up very well , Hardware men report an Increased trade. Commission Inuliieas U fair. There bcems to bo In creased activity In furniture , and collec tion * nro somewhat better. Taking Into consideration the extremely unfavorable weather of the last few wtekg this Is a > cry encouraging condition of affairs. A 'food ruin Is sadly needed throughout the west. Hoports from the winter wheat ielt show Home considerable damage to that crop. This loss might bo counteracted by the Increased price of wheat , but It ap pear * that llttla email grain has been held in this state. Many farmer * , however , arc turning their wheat flelda Into corn. Heavy rains nt lhl arason of the year nro n recognized necessity In thin climate. The neil must bo thoroughly well soaked before the dry summer neason In upon us. A few damp day * at this time would bo of Incal culable value. "Tho promoters of the Platte cnnal enter prise have been unusually nctlvo of late , and It appears tlmt { 1141,000 have thus far been subscribed to that fund. It Is claimed that when the sum reaches $150,000 an addi tional J 100,000 Is pledged by several local capitalists. The plan so far submitted cer tainly occins feasible , nnd If carried through to n successful Issue this canal would mean much to Omaha. The activity nnd pros perity , the largo Immigration which would follow the Inauguration of this gigantic en terprise , makes It a question of paramount Interest to Omaha and to business men. Many of the leading business men nnd prop erty owners have given this project much tltno and considerable attention , nnd scctn willing to back the same without stint. The high price of fuel Is one of the main obsta cles to the growth of manufacturing Inter ests In this locality. The solution of this question would decide the fate of Omaha as n manufacturing center and place It high on the list of Industrial centers. The trans mission of power by means of electricity would , It Is claimed , cnablo the canal com pany to furnish power to all the factories of Omaha and vicinity at n minimum of cost. This enterprise Is only one among n number which attest the activity nnd enterprise of local business men oven under the adverse circumstances now prevailing , and I do not hesitate to say that this same energetic spirit will do much toward establishing Omaha and the west In the confidence of the country at large. The first shipment of Salt Lakes also made Its appearance during the week. The poultry trade was rather sluggish for a couple of days , as dealers were gener.illy pretty well supplied. It was n weather market In wheat , with variegated crop re ports thrown In. The majority of the crop reports received today tniulo qulto light of damage , and the trade gave car to that ver sion of the story. The feeling was heavy , and while trade was light tlicro was less timidity shown by short sellers. At the close May wheat showed a loss of about Vic. Tlia spread between May and July Is now Hie. Corn was weak , and left oft with a loss for the day of % c. Oats were firm for near months , and weak for the more deferred months. Provisions were In the main quite firm. firm. After After the close of the regular session of the board yesterday wheat on the curb was very weak , but turned again to the bull sldo before trading was resumed. May sold privately yesterday as low as 63c , but the trading at the opening In the pit was at G4Vic , with 30M10 llttlo as high as Cl' c. The market kept steady at Cl'.ic for a time , but there was some nervousness on the part of the longs , aa the sellers appeared to bo act ing with much confidence. There were light rains In eastern Kansas , with an In dication of these spreading , and a majority of the crop reports which came In were In clined to minimize the amount of damage done by the freeze. The foreign outlook was not encouraging , Inasmuch us the great recent strength of the market here had only caused about Id advance at Liverpool. From Frankfort , Ky , , the reports were that the damage was being greatly magnified , and a dispatch from a farmer who works nil exten sive area near Louisville was that there was no damage to any extent. Missouri wired that It was raining there today and that the wheat prospects were better. Other re ports from many widely scattered localities were In a similar strain , and the market ruled weak In consequence. An attempt to sell 300,000 bil. by George Haldwln , resulted In a drop from Gl'/ic to C3c In less than two minutes. As soon ns the last 60,000 bu. of the lot referred to was sold , nnd the crowd saw there was no more to follow , the prlco dropped again to G3'&c. After that and up to the close busi ness was dull , but the tendency continued to be toward a lower level. Thcro was an other drop which carried the prlco off to 63c , followed by a reaction to G3c , and the lat est transactions were at that prlc ? , but there were more sellers than buyers at tlmt price as the bell rang. Corn opened from % c to Uc lower than It closed yesterday , and : In the course of the day declined ' /ic moro and closed at a loss of % c. Receipts were not heavy today and still lighter arc expected for Monday. Trade In the pit was light , without any prominent transactions on cither sldo of the market. May closed at an advance o vV4c over yester day's latest quotations. Trading In provisions was of a moderate volume. Prices were firm at the opening , but were followed by a period of weakness. Later on tin attempt to buy at the alight decline occasioned by the selling of lard , the mar ket ruled firmer and prices advancetj beyond yesterday's closing price ! ) and rested with a slight advance. Compared with last Jilght May lard Is 2VaC higher and May ribs 7 > , c higher. Estimated receipts for Monday : wheat , CO cars ; corn , 195 cars ; oats , t20-cars.hogs ; , 32,000 head. OMAHA LIVE STOCK MARKETS Week Just Ended One of the Best for Mouths iu the Cattle Trailo , WAS STRONG AND ACTIVE ALL THROUGH Deiniind ( limit nnd .Supply Itiitlirr Limited , fiiii'liij ; Lively Competition anil Higher Prices Hog * un the Upturn K.irly , but Clixu IliitherVc.ik. . . SATURDAY , April 7. Receipts of both cnttlo and IIORS have been ( airly liberal this week , nnd while falling somewhat short of last wcok'a heavy run , show a sharp Increase as compared with a year no. in sheep the receipts have been comparatively light , but sheep supplies on this market nro so Irregular an to afford no Indication as to the condition of the trade or the available supply in the country. The figures are ns follows : Cattle. Itojw. Sheep. Receipts this week. . . . ItWS 3Uks7 3.7S2 Receipts last week. . . , IS.IW 4t,74l ; 3llO Same week hist year. . I3,77a J5.26I 4,77'J Today closes ono of the best weeks In the cattle Hue that the trade bus experienced In weeks or oven months. It seemed per haps exceptionally satisfactory , following ns It did right on the heels of about the worst depression the trade has experienced In over halt a decade. At any rate an advance of fully lOc ought to bo fairly satisfactory nt most any time. A variety of circumstances contributed to the strength developed this week , principal among which was the very moderate supply of cattle at Chicago. This caused , almost compelled , Chicago slaughterers to come west to Omaha nnd Kansas City , where supplies were moro liberal , In order to get enough cattle to supply their trade , nnd herein lies a moral for western shippers. So long ns receipts are kept down at Chicago , It matters Ilttlu how heavy the supply may be at western markets , prices are bound to bo sustained. STRONG AND ACTIVtJ ALL TIIROUOtl. Iluth speculative shippers and buyers for eastern killers were good buyers all week , and this nctlvo oulsldo demand kept buyers for local houses hustling fur supplies. The dressed beef men fought the advance for all they were worth , but the outsldo demand was vigorous enough to absorb the entire offerings If need be , so that It was simply a cnso of keep up with the procession or quit. That waa exactly the situation today. There was n good run of cattle both In quantity nnd imallty , nnd local dressed beef men thought they hud a chance to even up mat ters , nnd accordingly started In bidding lower. With an active outsldo demand sellers did not want to , and , as It turned out , were not compelled to accept lower prices. Most of the trading was on n fully steady basis and tolerably active , while to ward the close the nctlvo competition nnd free buying resulted In some of the last sales showing pretty close to a lOc advance. It was n strong , actlvo and higher close tea a strong , actlvo and higher week , nnd the 3,352 cattle had nearly every ono changed hands by II o'clock. The supply of cow stuff was almost too small to afford a fair test of the market. There were not over twelve or fifteen lo.ida on sale , or less than 10 per cent of the total receipts , nuyers made short work of them at steady to a shade stronger prices. Cows and mixed stock did not sell so ruinously low a week or no ago as beef steers , and con sequently the advance on this clacs of stock has not been BO great this week , but Ific to 25c Is a good enough advance for six days. The market for calves was actlvo and strong and so was the trade In bulls , oxen ana stags. There was not much doing In stockcra and feeders today. There never Is on Saturday , but prices as n rule were firmly hell. This lias.-been a rather quiet week In this'branch of the trade , but the strength In fat cattle has been reflected here In a measure and prices are quotably lOc to loc higher tlian a week ago.
