CHICAGO , April 2. Wheat avcragarl nrm ,

wiched between early and Into strength nnd
closed Uc lilt-lifer. Tlicro was inoro reliance
plarcd In tl.e reports of crop damage which
mine from all directions. If tlio slates of
Missouri and Kalians do not Ret copious
warm rnlim In the next ten day not much
Jiopo will Ito left , report Bald , of oven half
n crop. Corn , onts nnd provisions were weak.
The weakness was occasioned by too llhcral
receipts.
Wheat opened rather easy nt aboutc
lower than It closnd on Saturday , lTit soon
recovered nnd ruled firm until nftcr the visi
ble supply Htntcmcnt showed n smaller de
crease than had been looked for. The open-
IriR for Mny was from 59c to COc , compnred
with GOHc. nt the close on Saturday. There
was nn Improvement during the morning to
CO lc. When the visible supply showed a de
crease of only 70.1.000 bit. , Instead of 1,000.000
bn . the price dropped to 597JC. The Liver
pool market was quoted firm at the op"iilng.
The amount on ocean passage Inorns'il ? . ? ! , -
000 bn. during the past week. The total stork
of wheat In the Liverpool elevators Is 1,906-
000 centals. Chicago receipts for the diiy
were 3C cars. Minneapolis nnd Duluth n.-
Iiorlcd121 cars. A year ago Chicago receipts
were 217 cars and Minneapolis and Miiltitli
got 9C1 cars. An attempt on the part of
u prominent commission house to cover some
wh"at ( sold early In this duy developed the
fnrt that the crowd hnd no more for Halo , and
then occurred a lively rally , which left May
nt C0c , or Uc gain for the day.
There was u fair attendance In the corn
pit and n moderate amount of trading iloni ? .
The tendency was In the main toward lowrr
prices. The receipts were 39fi cars and the
estimates for tomorrow 'su cars. Tlie prlco
of May at the start was S'Urcompared
with 37c at the close on Saturday. There
was a slight hardening tendency while thn
early advance In wheat was In progress ,
and as high as from 37 % c to 37c was real-
l/.ed for a lltllo at that time. With the sub-
npfj.ucnt weaker feeling In wheat , the prlco
of May corn dropped back to 37Uc. The
Ilnal rally In wheat brought corn back to
37c at the close , showing % c loss.
There was moderate business transacted
In oats and the market on all deliveries ,
with the exception of July , ruled a shade
easier In sympathy with the wheat and
corn market ! ! .
There was only a light trade done In the
provision pit and the feeling was rather
heavy. The heaviness was due to a larce
run of hogs reported from the yards. The
receipts were 41,000 head and the prices
were quoted from lOc to 15c lower. A little
b'.iylug caused a rally and the list closed
firm. Compared with Saturday night , May
pork Is lOc lower , May lard unchanged and
May ribs 5c lower.
Estimated receipts tomorrow : Wheat , 5G
cars ; corn , 4S3 cars ; oats , 410 cars ; hog.s ,
21,000 head.

IVock Opened In SoonrltleH with .Slightly

NEW YOHK. April 2. The week opened
on the Stock CNchango with n slightly
heavy tone to the speculation and prices
were In the main a fraction lower than the
closing figures of Saturday. The early
dealings were weak In tone and nn addi
tional decline ranging to 1 per cent was
recorded. It was not until 10:30 : o'clock
that tlio- downward movement was checked
and prices took an upward turn. The
active list responded but feebly to the efforts
to Improve the tone of the trading , making
merely n fractional rally , but some of the
specialties moved up briskly , notably Na
tional Starch first preferred 4 per cent and
Cordage preferred 3'-i per cent. North
western preferred rose 1 % per cent. Dur
ing the half hour '
following 11 o'clock a
reactionary movement was In fotce , In which
the losses were only slight and extended to
only n portion of the list. Some of the
active stock made advances , including Colorado
rado Coal and Iron I'/i per cent nnd Colorado
rado Kuel and Tennessee Coal and Iron 1
per cent. fiefore noon the rest of the list
had made n slight advance. In the early
portion of the afternoon the specialties
again became prominent nnd made further
advances , subsequently reacting slightly ,
but rallying quickly. The active list did
not participate in the rise , but continued
heavy to the close , the entire market clos
ing depressed compared with the final sales
of Saturday. Today's last prices are very
Irregular , fully as many stocks being below
as above the Hue. The bond market was
firm to strong nil ilay nnd closed strong In
tone.
The Post says : There were several In
dications in today's market for stocks that
the active London movement In Americans
had ended. Early quotations from the
other side were fractionally below our own ;
In Koine stocks , such as Louisville , there
were actual sales by froelgn houses and
the sterling exchange market , "perhaps the
surest sign , " held firm at Saturday's slightly
higher level. If the movement has now
reached a temporary halt It will give no
reason for surprise. Europe bought last
week fully 75,000 shares of stock , the greater
part of which was shipped abroad. No
buying movement In such a volume was
likely to continue long until the business
outlook wus clearer. The chnngo in the
general attitude of foreign capital , how
ever , Is likely to bo permanent.
The following are the closing quotations on
the leading stocks of the New York exchange
today :

Inillgimut Jluply of it State Officer to a
Nebranlui .Man's Kcport ,
OFFICE OF COMMISSIONER OF AGRI
CULTURE , AUSTIN , 'Tex. , March 30. To
the Editor of 'Tiio-Ileo : ' The Grand Island
Dally Independent of' the 24th Inst. contains
an article entitled "Walsh's View of Texas , "
which Is so manifestly prompted by prej
udice that I have been asked to reply to
It. In stating his objections to Texas
as a farming state , ho says : "The agent ,
corporation or speculator who would entice
any person to go there to make a living at
farming would bo guilty of the worst clnss
of fraud. " Then he says : "In the nor h-
ern tier of counties there Is some wheat and
oats raised , but It must be sold ns soon as
possible , as no grain of any kind will keep
In the state on account of the weevil. "
Now to show you how unworthy are the
statements of Mr. Walsh , I give you the
acreage , product and value of the wheat ,
corn and oats In a few of the northern
tier of counties.
Lamar County Wheat , acres , 315 ; pro
duct , 0,524 bushels ; value , $1,378 ; corn , acres ,
54.503 ; product , 1621,120 * bushels ; value ,
$559,724 ; oats , acres , 5,421 ; product , 156,182
bushels ; value , ? C1,382.
Fannln County Wheat , acres , 4,115 ; bush
els , 67,344 ; value , | 53,3C5 ; corn , acres , 54,129 ;
bushels , 1,626,030 ; value , $277,585 ; oats ,
acres , 11,681 ; busholB , 372,544 ; value , | 132,060.
Grayson County Wheat , acres , 11,181 ;
bushels , 181,023 ; value , $125,802 ; corn , acres ,
68,080 ; bushels , 2,205,365 ; value , $741,677 ;
oats , acres , 22,963 ; bushels , 811,272 ; value ,
$279,140.
These are the official figures for 1891 , and
those for 1S92 will soon bo published , Now
common sense will bear out the conclusion
that If the grain Is destroyed by the weevil
the price would be much higher. Ills next
statement Is as follows : "In that portion of
the state where there Is sufficient moisture
there Is no farm land nothing but swamps
and timber. " If there was not stilllclent
moisture In the counties of Lamar , Fannln
and Grayuon how could they raise the crops
given above ? The fact Is that of the 226
organized counties In the state there is not
one , unless cut up by bays from the Gulf of
Mexico , that is too wet for cultivation. The
most of the state Is upon a limestone forma
tion and never becomes too wet for re
munerative tillage.
His next monstrous statement Is hero
given : "Tho nnlmnls of the state ore
starving , grain and fodder being scarce
and high-priced. Hay In Houston now Is
worth $100 per ton. " Does any sane man
believe such stuff ? If ho does , let htm stay
away. For eight months In the year cat
tle do well upon the open rnngo without
being feil or sheltered.
Ay to chickens and eggs his statement
Is untrue. As fine chickens are raised
In Texas as In any state In the union , and
liavo as few diseases. I do not know of
a single chicken that is troubled with warts.
Hut his letter or statements are a tissue
of misrepresentations from beginning to

The week opens out with liberal receipts

decidedly easier feeling nt th * opening lien-
anil opening bids were lower. There was n
very fnlr Inquiry for shipping account , but
the ample offerings made buyers for local
houses indifferent. Later , as shippers' pur
chases depicted the available supply of beef
steers , the locnl contingent became more
active , nnd the market closed up brisk nnd
strong , with the pens cleared by noon. Most
of the trailing was on the basis of very
nearly steady prices , fair to good 1,000 to

The market for butchers' and canners'
stock was leasonably active at Just about
steady prices. Offerings were rather limited
nnd the demand very fair from nil sourci's.
Vcnl calves also readily commanded steady
prices , and the figures paid for bulls , oxen

HOGS U today's receipts furnish n fair
criterion there will bo plenty of hoKs hero
this week. The supply wus heavier than
last Monday by nearly 1,500 head and the
quality was fully up to the avcrap. I.owcr
marKctB cast , a very restricted shlppIng
demand and scarcely any speculative
activity placed sellers at a big disadvantage
and trade was rather listlaES , with prices
averaging pretty close to a dliuo lower than
Saturday all around. As usual the light
and butcher weight hogs cold to the best
advantage , but there was not room for much
of a margin , as the poorest hogs sold within
5c of the best , regardless of weight. It
was to all Intents and purpose a $4.40 lo
S4.-I5 market , practically everything selling
within that range. On Saturday the hogs
sold mostly at * I.GO and $1.55 , nnd a week
ago today tlio trading was largely at $4.15
and $4.50. llepresentatlvo sales :
