CHICAaO , March 30. Wheat advanced leper
per bushel todny on n very moderate amount
of buying. 'It closed with n net gain of from
% c to 740. There Is now no doubt of con
siderable Injury having been done lo wheat
In many tcctlons. There was much testi
mony ( o ttml effect and the result was a
firm market. Corn and oats were fairly
firm , but very dull. Provisions were strong
and quite active In spots , with higher prices
In the end.
Although the cold had greatly moderated
and wheat opened firm and % c higher than
It closed yesterday , the numerous dispatches
which had come to hand before the session
opened reported frost damage In more posi
tive terms than before. This was the cause
of the opening firmness and continued to bo
the governing Influence during the remainder ,
of the session. Liverpool responded to the
decline hero yesterday by sending quotations
ytd lower. The receipts hero were 28 cars.
Minneapolis and Duliith reported 22 cars.
Clearances from the seaboard were light ,
amounting from the four chief Atlantis ports
to only 230,000 bu. Duslncss was fairly ac
tive and the shorts , after hesitating for
about fifteen minutes , became free buyers.
The general tone among the longs was one
of confident firmness , and the price had an
upward tendency after the first quarter of
an hour. May opened at C0',4c , worked off
to 59c , and then gradually rose to G076c.
It reacted to COV&C , advanced to Glc , and held
firmly around C0e and GO-Ic , with an ap
parent reluctance on the part of the sellers
to part with much. It became firmer again
and half an hour from the close was back
up to Clc.
The closing cables were lower. Dcrlln
quoted a decline of y , mark and Paris a
decline of 25 centimes In flour futures and
from S to 15 centimes In wheat. There were
no reports of fresh cash business hero or at
Now York. The market here was quoted at
from C0c to C0c atthe close.
Corn was dull but firm and the firmness
was In the main ascribed to the Improvement
In wheat. The opening price for May was
37'/ic ; It rose by small steps to ,17c , and
during the greater part of the session It was
alternately 37'/6c to 37c for buyers and the
same for sellers. The price rested at 37e
for May , which shows no change for the day ,
and 38Vic for July , which Is an Improvement
of He.
Trading In oats was very light. There was
but little disposition to sell and less to buy.
The cash market was lower. During the
entire session the sales on all futures were
higher. May started steady at 31c , sold
up to Sl' c. back to 31c and closed at that
price bid.
There was a firm feeling In the provision
market after a preliminary decline. The
packers appeared anxious for a break at the
start , but when they had secured the de
cline there were brokers from commission
nouses prepared to take all that was offered.
The small stock estimated at 72,000 bbls.

Ibs. of ribs was a factor and probably the
principal motive behind buying orders. Com

P1UDAV , March 30.
Receipts wcro again fairly liberal today ,
the five days' supply showing an Increase of
3,100 head of cattle and 15,700 head of hogs
aver receipts for the same period for last
week. Thcro has been very little change In
the sheep receipts.
The cattle market as a rule was tolerably
active , but prices had a tendency to sag on
nearly all grades. There was a very re
spectable demand from all sources , but as
supplies were ample and reports from the
cast conflicting all classes of buyers were
Inclined to be bearish , and , except on some
thing that struck their fancy and on which
competition was active , prices shaded lower.
Some cattle sold strong and some sold Be
to lee lower , but most of the trading was
somewhere between these extremes. The
generally common quality of the cattle had
something to do with thu lower prices , but
In spite of this trading was rather . ' 'vcly '
throughout and a good and reasonably early
clearance .was made.
The cow market was Just about steady.
Oood , fat cows and heifers had no difficulty
In finding purchasers at good , firm figures ,
but the hard to poor stuff was harder to
move than It has been anytime this week.
There was n good demand for calves and
prices ruled firm on desirable offerings.
Hough stock of all kinds sold very generally
In Thursday's notches.
In stockers and feeders there was no
change worthy of note. There was perhaps
a better country Inquiry and for that reason
more active buying by yard traders. A fair
amount of good business was transacted and
prices wcro fully steady. Oood to choice
feeders are quoted at ? 3.00(3'3.40 ( ; fair to good ,
$2.7G3.00T.and lighter , commoner grades at
from $2.75 down. Representative sales :
