of a frost to kill the wheat In Its growing
stage , an was expressed by a majority of
traders yesterday , was again more emphati
cally ascrted this morning , and discussions
upon the subject continued to bo quite gen
eral during the dull Intervals In the session ,
but tlio only conclusion arrived at by both
parlies was that It would be necessary to
Volt two or three weeks for confirmation of
blthor side of the argument.
Dispatches from all points of Ilia winter

The corn market was Inclined to bo weak
rarly In the session on account of the same
feeling prevailing In wheat at that time. It
liecamo firmer later on sotno reported sales
for export and on the estimate of only 100
carloads for tomorrow. The receipts today
wore 207 cars. The Liverpool market wan
quoted firmer at about % d advance , and the
amount reported on ocean passage was 720-
000 bu. smaller than n week ago. The ex
port sales alluded to wcro two small cargoes
of No. 3 corn at 2c In store under the May
price of No. 2. Carrlngton-IIannah were the
sellers and Irwln-Grceno the buyers , and the
Bhlpmcnts ore to go via the St. Lawrence
river to Kingston. .There was a good busi
ness transacted in oats. The crowd In gen
eral was offering freely and the shorts ,
headed by Patton Bros. , bought quite freely.
Champlln was also a good buyer. Taken al
together , considerable stuff changed hands.
I'rlces wore firmer , opening about steady
and gradually advancing , closing at the top
prices of the day. The stocks of contract
oats In store showed a slight Increase this
week , but wcro nevertheless still very light ,
and this had considerable to do with influ
encing shortB to buy.
The provision market ruled strong at im
proved prices. The deal In lard was re
garded as a very bullish feature of the
present .situation , nnd the comparatively
Email stock of meats and the good consump
tive demand at present prices were pointed
to as another.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
22 cars ; corn , 100 cars ; oats , 114 cars ; hogs ,
29,000 head.

NEW YORK , March 27. It was a very
dull day on the Stock exchange and trading
was less Important In character than for
some ttmo past , the only features of moment
aelng the foreign buying , which was In con
trast to the light volume of local purchases.
St. Paul was the favorite of the London
juyers , but Atchlson , Louisville Nashville ,
Morthern Pacific preferred and Kansas &
Texas were also prominent. The market
opened strong at an advance on yesterday's
close of % to % per cent , the latter In
Northern Paclllc preferred , whlc.li was bought
by the arbitrage houses. The early dealings
were somewhat Irregular , the active list
jelng fairly steady , but some of the special
ties wcro erratic In their move-
ncjits. After midday the market he-
catno more settled In Its movements , but
as the afternoon grew a heavy tone over
spread the dealings and prices moved down
ward , the market closing heavy with prlcoH
on both sides of the line us compared with
the final sales of yesterday. Chicago Gas
lost % per cent on the day on sales mainly
jy the room traders. Distilling was also
weak , being sold because of a belief In cer
tain quarters that the agreement with the
distributing company Is not favorable to the
Distilling company. The bond market be
came Irregular In the afternoon and closed
irregular. The reorganization committee of
the Jarvls-Conklln company announced that
7C per cent of the bondholders In America
nnd a largo number In Europe have assented
to the plan , and a tulllclent number of cred
itors nnd shareholders have also given
their assent to warrant a call for deposit
of securities. Holders of the debentures and
other obligations and stock of the company
ire required to deposit them with the Mnn-
liattan Trust company of Now York or the
Union Trust company of Philadelphia. The
time for assenting has been extended to
April 20 , The new company to be organized ,
In addition to the general debentures pro
vided for In the plan , will Issue when desired
a form of debentures bearing 4 per cent , but
without many contingent Interests In tlio pro
fits of the company , payable In 10 , 12j } ! and
15 years , to be secured by bonds and. real

Receipts of both cattle iinil hogs wcro
very liberal today , but sheep supplies were
light. The two days' supply of cattle av
erages up about the same as last wrolf
while hogs have decreased about -1,500 lioili
and sheep fully 1,000 head ,
There was continued activity and flTHIMPHU
In the qattlo market today. Supplies were
liberal , but could hardly be called excessive
Buyers needed them all nnd would have been
glad to have been able to get more. Aside
from the liberal offerings conditions gen
erally were decidedly In sellers' favor. East
ern markets wore In better shape and the
continued cool weather made all classes of
buyers anxious for cattle. AH usual It was
the good , fat , light nnd medium weight steers
that sold to the best advantage prices , av
eraging all of lOc to 15c better than Satur
day. Even the heavy cattle did not drag
so hard and the common light , rough am :
thin stock was disposed of moro easily ani
satisfactorily. Jt Is dlfllcult to determine
Just what has caused the firmness of tlio
past couple of days , but certain It IH that the
feeling is bettor and most dealers are con
tent to let It rest at that without hunting
too far for the cause.
As.usual , cow stuff made tip a very smal
proportion of the offerings , less than 1C per
cent of the entire receipts. As with fat
cattle , the market was active nml Rtrong , al
though hardly quotably higher. Local houses
were all free buyers and a free movement
soon cleaned up the supply. The market for
veal stock was fully steady , and rough stock
of all kinds met with ready sale at good
strong prices.
The stacker and feeder trade was tolerably
actlvo and prices were strong. 13oth yard
traders and country buyers were after sup
plies , and a fair volume of business was
