CHICAGO , March 22. In anticipation of
tomorrow's holiday and with uncertainty
regarding the effect of the approaching cold
wave , there were more sellers than buyers
of wheat , nnd the price , compared with yes
terday's closing quotation , Is He lower. Corn
13 ' .40 lower and oatn unchanged , I'rovl-
ulons worn strong , closing prices pliovrlng a
pain of lOc In pork , 7Vic In Inrd and uc In ribs.
The opening In wheat was quiet , without
change In price since tlio previous afternoon.
The cold wave was moving slowly over the
winter wheat belt and had already spread
over Nebraska , Kansas and down Into Texas.
Itn course was still eastward , but the degree
nf cold was only sufficient to raise a doubt
and make It debatable whether any actual
damage to the wheat plant would' result
from It. The early cables were comfortless
and noted no change In the foreign situation.
The receipts nt Chicago were light. Ilusl-
ness was more than usually dull , and fluc
tuations for two hours were confined be
tween G77&C and GS'/ic during the forenoon.
The clearances from the Atlantic scauoard
worn fairly liberal. The receipts nt the pri
mary western markets , exclusive of Kansas
City , were 281,380 bit. , against 401,133 bu. n
vcar niro. Closlnc cables renortcd rather
( -nnler continental mnrltels. Thcro was nn
Increase of ncllvlly , with prices on u slightly
lower plane , near tlio close. May Bold nl
G7c nnd nlosed nt from 67c to 577&C.
There wns very little llfo In the corn
market nnd not enough doliiK to lift or de
press values lo n greater extent than Uc.
Kxport clearances were very small , but
there was n good demand for the offerings
hero In the sample market at about ' /Jo
over yesterday's prices. Mny started at
37c , declined to 37 > , ic , rose from that to
from 37ISc to 37c , but under tlio Influence
of the cany feeling In wheat toward the
: losc the inurket weakened und left off with
icller-f of May at 3"ic. '
While the slight flrmncss In corn In
fluenced n Rlmllar feeling In oats , business
In the lotlcr was far moro nctlve. There
were liberal offerings and a good demand
from sborlH. The cash market for oals
was very acllvo and firmer. May opened
slightly under yesterday's price , at from
JiO-yjC to 30c , and sold tip to 31 He. Toward
the close the market declined a shade with
wheat and corn. May closed with sales at
from 30c to 30c , and 30ic.
The provision market again developed
considerable strength. The extra firmness
was at first Hie result of the light run of
liogn , but was added lo later by the re
ported volume of the cash trade. The
closing prices were near the top figures of
the day. Compared with last night May
pork Is 10o higher. May lard 12V c higher
and May ribs He higher.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
28 cars ; corn , 1C5 cars ; oatt , 175 cars ; hogs ,
0.000 head.
No Hoard of Trade session tomorrow-
Good Friday.

Slmrc Speculation YesteribiyYnn Irregular
nnil Uim-tlleil.
NEW YORK , Jlnrch 22. The Hliaro specu
lation today was Irregular and unsettled and
tlio volume of business was extremely light.
As a matter of fact the trading was more
strlc'ly a matter of closing out contracts by
professlonnis who were not disposed to re
main long or short of Hie market over the
Good Frldny holiday. Consequently the mar
ket was without Important feature. IJetween
11 o'clock and noon the dealings were
Irregular , but the only fluctuations of note
were n decline of U per cent In Cordage
and an advance of % per cent In Cleveland ,
Cincinnati , Chicago & St. houls. During the
early part of the afternoon the market was
strong , but uniler free Hales prices took n
downward turn. During the last fifteen
minutes the trading was very Irregular and
the market closed very unsettled compared
with the closing sales of yesterday. The
grangers were unions Ihe most nctlve group ,
but the changes of figures were but slight.
The Indications now are , lu view of the de
cline of sterling bills , tlmt no gold will be
shipped to Rurnpe by Saturday's steamers.
The purchase In this market of American
securities for the foreign account during the
past few days hus ndded largely to the
volume of the bills In the market and re
moves the profit In pool operations. The
street also awaits dellnlto Information re
garding the fate of the seigniorage bill. The
bond market wns strong all day.
The Post says : The total treasury bal
ance today was $3,547,181 less than the rec
ord oi the second week in March. This de
crease Is due In some degree to the falling
olt In current federal revenue , which has of
late been smaller , both absolutely and rela
tively , than It was a few weeks since. Pen
sion expenditures , too. hnvo lately been
heavy. The process of "nourishing" the gold
reserve , however , continues with much suc
cess and the special balance Is still , dcspltn
the general money decrease , $1,000,000
grcaler than when the last of the bond
subscriptions were paid Into the treasury.
This season's movement of treasury funds
proves clearly enough that the government
need have no uneasiness over the gold re
serve , provided a sound currency be main
tained by a veto of the seigniorage Inflation
bill.

volume of trade. .Notwithstanding there
being practically one'Iess business day this

staples nt nearly all the larger cities In the
eastern , middle and some of the western

storekeepers for millinery , clothing and

orders for coke and pig Iron , 1893 delivery ,
have been taken , as well as for. steel rails

St. Louis reports that the demand for fin
ished Iron and steel , while : Improving , Is
due to cuts In quotations. Among the
more conspicuous staple prodnqts , prices
have advanced for rye , cotlon nnd Indian
corn , decreased available supplies being
primarily responsible. Coffee and leaf to
bacco remain strong at practically un
changed figures , and lower ranges of values
have been reached by several varieties of
Iron nnd steel , by live cattle and hogn at
western markets , by both raw nnd refined
sugar , by wheat , oats and mess pork. Con
siderable activity Is reported at Kansas

Receipts of nil kinds wore light today. So

been nn Increase of about 1,400 entile , while
liogs have decreased nearly 6,000 liend nnd
sheep about 1,800 lieail.
The cattle market was not n great deal
different from Wednesdny's trade. H ccr-
tnlnly was no bettor. Receipts wore light ,
but KOvus the demand , nnd ns other eastern
mnrkcts were iitioted lower the trade ns n
whole was rrtther iinsatlsfuctory. Shippers
have hnd llielr fingers burnt pretty badly
lately nnd were very bearish. They never
do much on Thursday , however , and this
circumstance had n great denl to do with
making business dull today. On the heavier
cattla parllcillarly the market was slow and
unevenly lower. Competition among buyers
for local houses for the fair to good light and
medium weight steers wns active enough to
sustain values fairly well , but for the com
moner light nnd rough stock prices ruled
weak and lower. It was a dull nnd dragging
market throughout , but n fairly continuous
movement caused n very decent clearance In
good season.
The cow market was very active and
prices averaged a shade stronger nil around.
There were Imrdly twenty loads on sale all' '

long In picking them up. Kalr to good
butchers' cows went largely at nroiind $2.23

were fully steady and the market for rough
stock wn9 no lower , common to very good

In stockcrs and feeders a very respectable

HOGS Dealers were all looking for moro

A shortage of nearly 0,000 hogs so far this

were the principal buyers , They started In
