CHICAGO , March 19. Wheat closed at
from 670 to 67o today , the lowest It lias
ever finished for May , showing n loss of % c
ilnce Saturday. A smaller decrease In the
vIMblo supply tlmn was expected , lower
cables , good crop prospects and nn Increase
In the rinantlty of wlicat and flour on pas-
imgc wcro responsible for the decline. The
working ot 24.0,000 bu. of exports steadied
the market nt the close , but May finished
near the bottom. May corn closed un
changed , May oats % c lower , and provisions
n trllle higher all around.
The warm rains throughout the northwest
caused sonic selling of wheat and an easier
feeling nt the opening. Tfie amount of
wheat and flour on ocean passage Increased
2,221,000 bu , during the last week , which
was nn additional motive for putting out n
few "fives" and "tens. " Minneapolis re
ported 210 cars and Dnlnth15 cars , against
273 and 202 respectively a year ago. Liver
pool was quoted dull and rather easier at
unchanged prices. New York advised some
selling by foreigners at the opening there.
Minneapolis , which closed % c higher than
Chicago on Saturday , came down lo a level
with prices hero soon after the opening.
There was nothing particularly encouraging
In the above Items for the bulls , and there
was an evident fading of hope for their sldo
In the Increasing premium the holders of
May contracts paid for changing them Into
July. Krom 2c to a shade less was paid
nbout the middle of the ecsslon to turn May
Into July. The market opened at from GSc
to GSlJic , nnd for nn hour or so the fluctua
tions wcro In the main confined to that small
range. As the figures of the visible supply
statement came slowly to hand the market
became heavier , as the hope of more than
1.2GO.OOO bu. decrease began to fade. When
the actual quantity of the decrease was
fairly established , the price of May fell to
from 57c to G7c , and of July to from G9'/&e
to G9c. The visible supply decreased 1,218-
000 bu. , which Is about 250,000 bu. smaller
falling off than was looked for. The total
In the visible supply now Is 73,259,000 bu. ,
ngalnst 79,020,000 bu. at the similar period
a year ago. The Saturday's clearances from
the four principal Atlantic ports were equal
to about 390,000 bu. In wheat and flour to
gether. The closing cables brought lower
quotations from all the principal foreign ex.
changes. Without a shade o" encouragemem
from any quarter , heaviness continued to rule
here. The working here of some of the
wheat for export gave the market some sup
port toward the close. A. C. Duehl & Co.
sold 80,000 bu. , W. II. Harper , 50,000 bu. ,
nnd Norton Worthlngton , GO.OOO bu. , all No.
2 spring. The trading as the market closed
was at from 57c to 67c. There was a
fair Inquiry for vessel room at 2c for wheat
to Buffalo.
Corn was dull In the main and at times
extremely BO , though the fluctuations were
narrow with such change as there was in
the price In favor ot those who wore short.
There was an Increase for the week In the
amount afloat for Europe amounting to
264,000 bu. The visible nupply there In
creased 600,000 bu. Export clearances were
Email. Uartlett-Frazler bought In some
short corn , but the general tone was bear
ish , Influenced apparently by the low re
ceipts and tljo heaviness In wheat. May
opened at from 3Cc to 3 % c , sold at 38c
and then alternated for a long time between
SGc for buyers and the same price for
sellers. It dropped to 3Cc for a moment
when the probable visible supply and the
estimated receipts were reported. The mar
ket was firm In the last half hour of the
session nnd wound up at the highest point
of the day's range.
The oats market was dull. Ltttlo stuff
was offered for sale , and there was even
less wanted. There was a slightly increas
ing trade In sympathy with corn.
Provisions opened a shade- firmer on hog
receipts under the estimate and firm prices
at the yards , and after some slight modifi
cations ot the first Impression It wound up
In substantial agreement therewith , Fowler-
Sterling nnd Baldwin wore among the early
buyers of lard. The Anglo-American PackIng -
Ing company was also a moderate buyer.
HOB receipts wore 2-1,000 head , and the esti
mate for tomorrow Is 21,000 head. The clos
ing quotations show Go Improvement In pork ,
7' , c In lard and Go In ribs.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
75 cars ; corn , 50 cars ; oats , 3GO cars ; hogs ,
21,000 head.

Week Opened with n Firm Tone to thu
Speculation.
NEW YORK , March 19. On the Stock ex
change today the week opened with a firm
tone to the speculation and generally
higher prices , Chicago Gas , which was 1
per cent down , being the only notable ex
ception. Sugar showed moro strength and
activity , the first sale being at nn advance
of 1 per cent. In the early dealings a
further Improvement of l6 per cent was
made , followed by a reaction of % per cent.
Washington advices coming forward to the
effect that the refiners would bo given In
creased protection induced purchases of the
shares , and rumors were circulated that the
recent bull pools In Sugar were again acquir
ing stock for the purpose of another upward
movement. The result was an advance of
2 % per cent , nt which figure there was tfomo
profit taking , which caused a reaction of
ll/6 per cent , but at the late dealings there
was a recovery of % per cent , leaving a
gain on the day of 2 % per cunt. St. Paul
was fairly well held In the morning nnd
was bought In email lots for the London
account , but the stock fluctuated within a
margin of % per cent , making a decline
of % per cent.
The other grangers also kept Inside a
1 per cent limit on moderate transactions
nnd shows an Improvement of J/t to % per
cent. National Lead made a spurt during
the morning of 2V6 per cent , but lost %
per cent of the Improvement In the late
dealings. The preferred rose % per cent.
In Distilling the speculation was restricted
by reason of the unsettled condition of
affairs between the distributing and the dis
tilling companies , representatives of which
are still In conference on the western Issue.
Thcro Is hope that at a meeting to bo held
on Wednesday an agreement may bo reached.
After an advance of % per cent , the shares
receded % per cent and rallied % per cent.
Missouri Pacific lost 4 per cent , then roeo
U6 per cent , closing at a reaction of Vb per
cent. In the rest of the Hut the transac
tions wcro on a small scale , but some of the
specialties made material gains on the day.
A fairly steady tone characterized the market -
kot at the close. The bond market was

Cattle values wore more satisfactory to
sellers today than closing prices last week ,
while the supply was rather moderate for
Monday. There was a fair shipping demand ,

fair competition prices ruled from strong to

The receipts of cows and heifers were
also moderate , nnd the market reasonably
actlvo and firm from start to finish.
Slock cattle wcro offered ( n considerable
numbers , In fact , one-half of the offerings
consisted of this class of cattle. There
was a brisk demand from nil sources nnd
prices were well sustained , especially on
the better cattle. Representative sales :
number of hogs on sale , hardly enough here
to inako a market , In fact , packers bought
few , if any , hogs , ns there were not enough
to make a killing. The market opened slow ,
5c lower , nnd closed weak , lOc lower , with a
number of loads unsold. Butcher and light
weights were about the only grades sold , the
heaviest hogs being carried over. Extreme
sales were nt from $ I.32'X ! to $4.42i4 nnd
