OltfCAOO , Feb. 8. Heavy buying by Armour - mour & Co , at tlio .opening today stopped tlio ttrcllno In wheat , and May closed He higher after having made a low price rec ord nt Civic for May , Free offerings nnd heavy liquidation were responsible for tlio narly break. May corn Is unchanged , May naU Vic hliltcr ; and provisions slightly higher all around , Wheat began the day with fnlr prospects for a panic. Tlio weak feeling of yesterday was present with relnforcetni'ntH at the opening , and May began at it loss of % c nt ClT c. Traders threw up their hando , nnd offerings poured out with alarmlnfc rapidity. Kales Wftro niado as low as Cl ic , but the br-ar raid wa * cut nhort by the nppoaranco of Armour as a buyer. Northwestern re ceipts wcro again heavy. Minneapolis nnd Dultith reported .120 cars , as compared with " 02 cars on the corresponding day last year. This announcement caused a temporary re laxation , but thu prlco t-oon started up again. A report from London of a bank falltira there caused a slight drop , but the depression was short lived. The feature of the day was Armour & Co.'s buying through II , V. Lester. Ho took all he could get at C2c or under for May , and seemed to Jiavo an np- petlto llko Hint of the historic hired man. Ho bought In lots from 2r > ,000 to 100.000 Int. , while Valcklne , Armour's regular broker , diligently absorbed what was loft. Closing cables averaged firmer. The bulls refused o retire from the field , and May closed at the top. May opened at Glide , declined Vic , nnd with Blight fluctuations advanced % c to close nt C2c. The corn market rfilcd quiet most of the day , prices keeping within © % limit. The opening was Vic lower In hympathy with the drop In wheat , but the demand soon Improved and a Vi@o advance was scored. Free offerings nt the Improvement checked any further upturn and the market later on sagged back n fraction , ruled steady nnd closed with May but % c from the day's top figures. In oats there was n better feeling and although trading was not largo , prices advanced V4c and the market closed strong at the top. A scarcity of offerings prevented a decline early and the Inter strength In wheat and corn was re sponsible for the advance. A fairly steady feeling prevailed In pro visions early on the light run of hogs at tlio yards , there being about 4,000 loss than esti mated. Some little strength was developed on three prominent packing Institutions sup porting the market. The market continued to rule steady except that Just before the tap of the bell pork was forced down on a slight order to sell , which caused an easy closing for that product. Closing prices were near the day's outsldo figures. Compared with last night , May pork Is 12Ac higher , May lard 2V c higher , nnd May ribs yv c higher. Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat , 60 cars ; corn , COO cars ; oats , 203 cars ; hogs , 17.000 head. The leading futures ranged as follows : CMMI ! ( ( notations were as follows : Kl.Oim Kn y. Iowa Central preferred today shows n decline of 2'4 per cent , Pullman and Cotton Oil preferred ! , nnd New York Central t per cent , The bond market was generally ( Inn throughout the day. The Post says ; Today's professional movement for lower prices was unite as favorable as yesterday's. It centered In Western Union , concerning which the favorIte - Ito bear argument Is that the telephone competition Is about to ruin the business. This sounds singularly llko the predictions of ruin to the city surface railroads when the elevated system was Introduced. The Dell Telephone company's old and rather transparent move to water Its own stock has , of course , added to the material used In Stock exchange logic. Although the market ns a whole was heavy there were some striking exceptions ; Sugar certificates advanced again on covering of shorts and Lead certificates on. the company's good report for 1893. Heading securities , too , both stock nnd bonds , advanced on the not very startling or unexpected news that the opposition to the piesent management's plan had given way. The movement else where , especially In the afternoon , was of the most desultory character , with a closing by no means uniformly weak. OMAHAi Feb. S. To tho' Editor of The Dee : I notice a letter In The Evening Dee of February 7 , by J. Hoslcky , which on ac count of Its misrepresentations and Injustice to the water works company , calls for a reply. Mr. Roslcky's jumbled-up attack on the water company Is from start to finish a mixed up mess of falsehoods and stupid in sinuations. Ho starts out with "Why not demand of the water company a fulfillment of Its contract ? " Then ho attempts to de scribe what the contract Is. Now , most every Intelligent person In the city of Omaha knows what the contract between the water works company and the city of Omaha is , and they also' know what Mr. Roslcky does not seem to know , I. o. . that the water works company Is carrylns out , and moro than carrying out , that contract , Mr. Hoslcky to the contrary notwithstanding. Ho writes of the decrease In pressure. Mr. Roslcky's establishment must certainly not bo possessed of a common pressure Rtwgo or ho could see for himself that the pressure in the water mains has not varied a pound slnco the works were finished , some ten years ago , and cannot vary until the location 3f the reservoirs arc changed. Does II r. Hoslcky rcsldo In Omaha and docs ho road the Omaha dally papers ? If so , does ho not known that the tests referred to have been made n number of times , the last one with in six months , all tests complying With the requirements of the contract. Mr. Roslcky takes water from the water company for his establishment through n motor and pays for just the water that [ lasses through his meter. Ills water bills Tor the past year amount to an average of $4.30 per month. This certainly seems a reasonable bill for such an establishment as ho describes. Mr. Roslcky called , at the waterworks olllco and demanded tlint tlio motor bo taken out nnd that "ho bo , rated. Mr. Roslcky gave the rate clerk the number of employes as thirty ; also giving thruo or four water closets , three or four basins , urinal and other fixtures , and on being In formed that the rating would amount to more than $4,30 per month ho became abusive and threatened the company that he would give them a "roast , " hence his violent attack. I would ask Mr. Roslcky what other city of Omaha's slzo can show the record thm wo can of a high and unchange able pressure , and ono where the supply lias never failed In a single Instance during a fire. A. II. HUNT , Receiver American Waterworks Company. AXOTllKlt SVSl'KUT AllltKHTKll. Harry Harder Taken Into Custody Bus- pliloncil of MurdurliiK l.nwyur Uiirr. DKNVISUJJolo. , Feb. 8.
