CHICAGO , Feb. 2. Wheat opened lower
and afterwards declined , but reacted and
closed but HO lower for May. Tlio early
weakness was duo to weaker cables , light
clearance * , liberal northwestern receipts and
mild weather. The strength at the cloao was
due to a llttlo buying Induced by the pros
pect of rain for the winter wheat belt , to
bo followed by freezing weather. May corn
closed unchanged , May oats \\c \ { higher and
provlnlons slightly lower all around.
Wheat started weak with May % o lower
at Olc. Liverpool was quoted dull and ' /c
lower and private cables were oven nioro
dlRCouraglng. The southwestern receipts ,
too , were heavier than last year. Minne
apolis and Duluth reported 201 cars , as com
pared with MO a year ago. The export clear
ances were ngaln light , amounting In wheat
anil flour from the four principal Atlantic
ports and New Orleans , to about
70,000 bu. New York wired that
there was no export Inquiry tlicro and sent
bearish telegrams about low priced Argen
tine wheat. The selling became rather free
and prices slid down easily until near the
close , when May reached G3c. A fair de
mand at that figure was developed and prices
were steady. Then there camu bullish news
from the weather man , stating that a
heavy rain storm was billed to play nn en
gagement In the winter wheat bolt. Fol
lowing the dampness , It was stated a se
vere freeze would occur , and the prospective
damage to the crop started nn advance.
Prices went up with more regularity than
they had shown any previous tlmo In the
Besslon , and May closed firm but ' /ic ( from
the day's top figures. May opened at file ,
declined V4c and advanced l&c to the close
lit 61 We.
Corn was moderately active at times ,
though most of the session was quiet with
fluctuations keeping within ' , ic limit. The
feeling displayed was easy and prices
reached a still lower level , The Increase
In the receipts was the principal Influence
In depressing the market , though the sell
ing for country account was another factor
aiding the decline. Opening trades were
nt yesterday's closing figures , and under
fair offerings sold down ' /c , rallied J,4e ,
ugaln declined , ruled firm , advanced Vic ,
with wheat and closed with May at the top
Jlgiires.
The oats market was moderately active
and easy early In sympathy with wheat ,
but with the late strengh In wheat prices
advanced ! 4c and closed quiet at a fraction
better than yesterday with May at the top
figures of the day.
The provision market opened firm and un
changed on a lighter mn of live hogs at the
yards than was expected , with Higher prices
for them early. The weakness In grain was
responsible for a moderate break in the ab
sence of any support In lard. The filling of
an order for pork , however , sent that pro
duct up again to n limited extent. The vol
ume of trading was extremely light. On the
report that the early advance in hogs was
lost , and somewhat free offerings , prices for
pork were driven down and both lard and
ribs were carried down In sympathy , but
only to a moderate extent. A reaction set
In subsequently on a little buying. Com
pared with last night , May pork Is 12' e
lower , May lard lOc lower and May ribs 7'c
lower.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
71 cars ; corn , 487 cars ; oats , SO cars ; lings ,
12,000 head.
The leading futures ranged as follows :

IIxportH am llRhl , the proHpozt it diHConraRliiR and
cables are lower. Thn buyers of wheat were less
dlupOHed to buy to arrive than before for several
days. This was. perhaps , duo to the Inrt'er ar
rivals In conscqueneo of the wheat previously
boim'ht for forward delivery. The sales of
wheat on track averaged about Uo lower
than yesterday. Tradlntr In futures was
active n portion of the day nnd the iiR-Rreg-ato
business was larser1 than yestciday or the day
before. There appeared to bo a good deal of
wheat bought and sold on outside orders and flour
traders were also busy most of the day. May
opened nt OOWe and closed at I ) Die. the highest
point of the day and "Hie above the lowest point
llOJic. July opened at O-'Ke , nnd closed at OlHc.
Track wheat closed. No. 1 hard , Olc ; No. 1
northern , OlXc ; No. 2 northern , OOe. Ilecclpts
were 178 cars ; shipments , 21 cars. Ileports from
the Interior show that farmers urn sellliiR freely as
the weather Is good , although In some sections
the roads arc bad there being too little snow for
slelchltiir. and too much lee for wairons. The
prospects nre that thoto will be some increase In
country elevators when the report Is made next
Monday. It Is also supposed that there will be
Rome Increase of thn stuck In the city. The most
active buyers of track wheat are some of the larg
est milling llrms. They are buying It to put In
Btoro and Homo are buying freely of May. Ills
probably the buying by millers that keeps up the
price of track wheat and also makes a firm market
for May nearly all the time , A week ago there was
a good deal of turning over of lone wheat from
May to July. Less of It was done today than
usual ,
Mills are running nt a rate of about 10,000 bbls of
flour for the twenty-four hours with a prospeet of
the output for the week being a tow thousand bbls
larger than laat week. Prices are steady with
sales at about $ ; i.f > ( > for best patents In bnrrclH'nnd
about fl.005v2.00 for bent bakers. Second quality
of both patents and bakers were very qulst with
little demand for thorn and low grades are mostly

NKW YORK , Pel ) . 2. 7ho volume of
business on the Stock exchange wns very
light toilay nnd fluctuations were confined
within unusually narrow limits. An nt-
tcinpt wan mailc at the opening to raid the
market on the strength of tlio passing of
the Wilson bill , sugar being selected as the
chief victim. The general list responded
to a very trilling extent , nnd Sugar , after
n decline of 1U per cent , took a sharp up
ward turn , advancing 2'/l per cent. Later
thcro was n decline , nnd llnal prices were
l\d \ per cent higher than yesterday's close.
Distilling was strongly held throughout the
day , opening nt an advance of % per cent ,
never receding moro than > J per cent below -
low , nnd closing nt an advance of ' 6 per
cent upon that figure. Of the grangers ,
Northwestern nnd Hock Island were entirely
neglected nnd tlio dealings In llurllngton
and Milwaukee & St. Paul were light , the
closing being ! 4 per cent below yesterday.
The Interest of the list trading was on n
very small scale , nnd during the afternoon
the changes of prlco made were of the
smallest fraction , nt times the market
being completely stagnant. After 2 o'clock
n firmer tone prevailed and prices advanced
a fraction , the speculation showing a trlflo
moro activity , but In the llnal dcallnga the
market reacted nnd closed rather heavy ,
prices being ' ,4 to % per cent below the
closing quotations of yesterday.
The Post says : The Wilson tariff bill
1ms now passed the house of representatives
and Wall street received the news today
with exemplary calmness. The outpour of
long stock foretold by calamity prophets on
the market , came In sight nowhere. The
stock market's closing wns firmer through
out , though still particularly dull , the senti
ment over the Washington development
being generally relief that at least ono atngo
of thu congressional discussions wns passed.

"Receipts of ca'llio'for the past five days
have boon 2,000 short of the supply for the
corresponding period last week , while there
has been an Increase of about -1,000 hogs and
COO sheep.
There were hardly enough cattle hero
today to afford a fair test of the market ,
but as far as It wont the trade was n good
deal more satisfactory to all concerned.
Local dressed beef houses all wanted a few
cattle , while one or two outside orders made
the trade more lively. There was no.quota-
blo Improvement In values , but Thursday's
figures were well sustained. Fair to good
1,100 to 1,300-lb. beeves sold at from ? 3.35
to $3.GO , whllo fair to poor stuff and odd
lots went nt from $3.30 down to $2,75. The
tone to the trade was better and an early
clearance was effected.
The cow market was rather active and n
shade better all around. Offerings Included
25 or 30 cars , and local houses evidently
wanted them , as they were nil out of first
hands by 110611. Sales of common canncra to
choice fat cows and heifers were made nt
from $1.50 to $3 , the fair to good butchers'
stock going largely at from $2.10 to $2.50.
Calves at from $2.60 to $5.50 for common
to choice veal stock were quotably firm , and
bulls , oxen and stags selling nt from $2 to
$3.25 showed llttlo noteworthy change.
There was not much doing In stockers and
feeders , both supply and demand being light ,
but prices were well sustained on nil suit
able grades. Good to choice feeders are
quoted at from $3 to $3.50 , fair to good nt
from $2.70 to $3 , and lighter , commoner
grades at from $2.70 down. Representative

HOGS There were nearly 1,000 more hogs
here today than on last Friday and the qual
ity for a day or two past has hardly been up
to the average. Conditions were much the
same as on Thursday's strong close and the
market opened up active at prices all of a
nickel higher. Fair to good hogs of nil
weights sold largely at from $5.20 to $5.25 ,
with common stuff at $5.15 , but latei > v'i °
market weakened on less favorable news
from Chicago , and closing bids nnd sales
were nearly all at $5.15 , or not a great deal
different from Thursday. The early advance
was completely wiped out and the close was
weak. Ono load of fancy light hogs brought
$5.27'i $ and pigs sold as low as $5. Fair to
good hogs of all weights , however , sold very
largely at from $5.15 to $5.20 , as against $5.10
and $5.15 Thursday and from $5.25 to $5.30
on last Friday. Representative sales :
