For the flrat tlmn since the holidays there
is some material indication that the com
mercial world is beginning to recover
from the depression of the past six
months and to branch out toward the
future with some degree of confidence.
While there Is no great improvement In
general trade , there are unmistakable signs
or a better fueling , and business scorns to bo
reaching a llrmer basis * The most encour
aging feature of the present condition
Is that it is not confined to any
single locality. Uoports from the cast
agrco with the experience of the
Omaha Jobbers that the week has recorded
a noticeable improvement in the business
conditions of the country. Tills view is also
corroborated by the reports of most of the
traveling men , who declare that the small
merchants are beginning to realize that the
panlo is over and are more inclined to In
crease the size of their orders than hereto
;
fore.
fore.As far as Omaha is concerned the im
J provement lias been most noticeable during
the last three days of the week. The in
tense cold of the llrst thrco days had a ten
dency to create a temporary slackness in
trade , but ns the weather moderated and
people began to got out of doors
orders carne in faster than at any
tlmo during the present year. It can
not bo said that the change has been alike
marked in all lines , as some dealers have
failed to note an improvement on the record
of the previous wcok. These , however , ilro
In the minority and the aggregate estimate
Is to the 'fullest extent satisfac
tory. A leadlne dry goods house
reported that Thursday was by odds the
best day of the present year and on Friday
the improvement was still more marked.
Other jobbers called attention to the fact
that orders of fair proportions were begin
ning to como In and that the more confident
feeling manifested by their customers was
equally apparent in all parts of their terri
tory.
tory. With the stocks of both wholesalers and
retailers nt a minimum the slightest Im
provement Is ruftlcient to make itself felt in
nn unusual degree. As the small dealer has
only been buying what ho absolutely needed
for the past six months oven a slight tnllux
of business forces him to resort to the job
bers for goods. The jobbers have also run
thulr stocks down to hard pan , and an In
crease of orders means a general hustling
lor goods all along the line.

Mr.V. . H. Hoborson , local manager for the
n. G. Dun & Co. Mercantile Agency , speak
ing of trade conditions , says :
"Tho next danger to bo apprehended is n
congestion.of tho.circulatlon in three of the
great eastern cities. In round numbers ,
Boston now holds $50,000,000 of the currency
of the country , Philadelphia ? 10,000,000 and
New York $400,000,000. A moment's reflec
tion will reveal the fact that about X % per
cent of all the gold , silver and legal
tender of the nation is already tied
up in these three cities , nnd the drift thither
continues at a remarkable rate. I fancy
that M per cent of ttie-avallublo cash of the
country is now in the vaults of the Now
York , Now Kngland , Philadelphia nnd Dalit-
"moro banks and trust companies. What the
effect of this will bo upon other financial
centers I do not pretend to say , but It
shows n remarkable condition of exhaustion
forptbcr sections of the union , and at this
season of the year there is nothing In the
, -vvest .to move it across the Allcghcnles.
Loans on real estate in ordinary times would
( soon cijualUo the circulation nnd generally ,
even In midwinter , the.money wns needed
here for grain and stock. But this is an
anomalous period , and the financier who can
safely predict the outcome is not pressing
himself into print.
"Locally , trade has been dull except In
groceries , and oven this Hno'rcports com
parative quiet. January has been a disap
pointment , to jobbers , as well as retail
dealers. - The fact is , ttio whole country is
waiting for nobody knows what , but
80iuo sort of a change. The manufac
turers of the > cast nro waiting for the
notion of congress on the tariff-bill. The
producers of the west nro waiting for the
manufacturers to employ their warklngmcn
again to create a market. The. bankers nro
everywhere Hvvimmlng close lo shore , and
even speculators are waiting for some
thing lu which to speculate. Asldo from nn
International prize tight there 1ms been
nothing to employ the wits and loose cash of
the largo floating | > opulatlou in this country ,
which lives by a lucky turn In stocks , real
estate or other form of chance speculation.
Even thu gamblers nro cautious.
"Tho week has been devoted very largely
to charity , nnd It niusi be said to the credit
of our citizens that they have shown thorn-
solves fully nlivo to the present emergency
nnd are meeting the unusual conditions
nobly and generously. It is n sad fact
which wo must nil fnco that
for the next two mouths hun
dreds of worthy people will bo
forced through no fault of their own to rely
for the necessities of Ufa upon the charity
nf their neighbors nnd the public. It will
bo n dlsgrnco to Omaha to permit suffering
"T-go unrelieved , nnd Omaha will permit
nothing of the idnd , though her societies
will take pains to expose impostors.
"Tho Commercial club Is making rapid
strides for publiu favor these days. The
easy , comfortable rooms nnd appointments
are unpreciated and utilized by hundreds
dally now. and thp time Is coming when n
business man who Is not n member of this
organization will bo very lonesome. "

Tliero was no indication that anything ,

The receipts were on the incrcaso again

NEW YOHK , Jan. 27. There was hardly
sudlclcnt business done on the Stock exchange -
change today to constitute n market outsldo
of Now England , Western Union , Sugar ,
St. Paul nnd Ixiulsvlllo & Nashville , nnd of
these the ilrst named fluctuated outside of a
limit of * < per ccut rnngo. At the opening
Iho prevailing tone was llrm and buyers
were a small fraction higher , but there was
llttlo or no buying nnd a slight reaction en
sued , the market going down of Its own
weight , rather than ny reason of any nres-
sure to sell. It was not until the last half
hour that the traders began selling New
Kngland , which , for lack of support from any
quarter , broke -V ; per cent , closing nt thu
lowest ilguro touched. The general list
was not materially affected by the break In
New England nnd closed fairly llrm. Llttlo
or nothing was done In the grangers outside
of St. Paul. Distilling nnd General Klcotrlo
wcro entirely neglected. Compared with
the Ilnnl sales of yesterday the changes at
the close were as a rule fractional. The
railway nnd miscellaneous bond market was
llrm throughout.

The stormy weather during the early part
of the week nnd the bad marKets during the
latter part of the week resulted In very
light receipts , both cattle and hog supplies
showing n marked falling off ns compared *
with a week ago atul a year ago. The fig
ures nro ns follows :
Cattle , lloss. Shoop.
KecclptsthU week lU.Uia 24.0U5 11,003
Receipts last week 14,0'JO 20,031 5,194
Anne week last year. . . . 1W.G3S 'JO.OdS 4,100
Hccolpts for the past four weeks , as com
pared with the corresponding period last
year , show n decrease in cattle of about 20-
( XX ) head and hogs decrease about idOO ; )
head. In sheep there has been a slight In
crcaso , something like 4,000 head.
There have been worse woes In the cat
tle market than thU , but very fuw of them ,
and about the only cause for it is the very
limited consumptive demand. People are
hard up , or think they are , and lots of folks
who usually considered meat n neces
sity look upon it this year ns a lux
ury. Receipts have fallen off nearly ! ! 0
per cent us compared with last year , while
the demand has fallen off , if butchers are to
bo bellowed , fully 00 per cent. There may
boa bettor time coming , but buyers are not
banning on it to any great extent. At any
rate It was a dull , weak market from start
to finish , and with prices declining every
day the week's decline amounted to 2. j to
40c on all grades.
Itnll anil Unevenly laitvur ,
The market today was simply a sample of
what it has been all week. Keccipts wcro
light and the demand was of the same in
different character. Sellers had hard work
to get buyers to look at their holdings , and
the bids received were generally lower ,
although as usual very uneven. The
quality of the offerings wus
nothing extra , but buyers uro always
moro captious as to quality when the mar
ket is going down lhaii when it is iroiug up.
The cattle that brought f4 weighed I.40U
los. and wcro choice , while fair to very good
stock sold around ? : ! . : ) to fi.UT > . Trade
dragged along through the entire dav , and
at the close there were several load * still
unsold.
About a third of the supply today was cow
stuff , and while , tlio trade was not particu
larly active the prices paid were hardly
quotably lower than Friday , although nil of
40c lower than the close of last week.
Cunners sole1 down rs low ns ? t , and
choice fat heifers brought. $3.05. Fair to
good butchers' stuff sold very largely at
from $2.10 to f-.GO. Common to choice veal
calves brought from $2 to $5.50 , or about
steady prices. Hough stock of all kinds was
in indiftercnt demand and lower , common to
very good bulls , oxen and stags selling at
from $1.85 to fJ-bo.
The stacker and feeder tra.lo was quiet
and featureless. Hardly anything was going
oil , neither supply nor demand being very
heavy. The few that sold went at about
steady prices , and the tone to thu trade was
firm. Good to choice feeders are quoted at
S3ton.70 ; tailto good nt S2.70 to $11 and
lighter , commoner grades at from $2.70
down.

look that belorn many days thU decrease
will glvo place to an Increase. The Increase ,
however , cannot possibly bu large enough to
seriously cnuumbor the trade , and whllo
prices may and probably will to lower ,
there are fewer men who prod let a radical
