ne .
) , Jan. 20. The xvhcat market
today swung hko the pendulum of an old-
fashioned clock within n very narrow range
and the swing was regulated by the prlco of
"puts" and "calls. " Compared with the
price of the previous day the prleo Is J c
lower. Corn declined from K to % o. Pro-
vlfclrm.s opened llrm and closed woalc.
Wheat continues. In the same rut It has
occupied for several days , prlco chanpos
being narrow , the whole iluctuatlon today
covering a range of only ifo. Cables were
colorless , business abroad It almost at a
itandstill and the local board featureless.
Wheat has some friends , of course , but In
view of the pnst experiences of present con
ditions they lack the courage to make pur
chases. On the othv hand , prices are so
far below all former records that oven bears
hcsitato to sell ihort. May opened at 0.'e ,
advanced to Wljfc , declined ana closed steady
at opening prices.
There was a change of fooling In the corn
trade from" yesterday. The movement is
picking up again , the exports dropped off
HIIU the cables came castor. The leaders In
the trade , with a scalping profit from the
advance , turned sellers and the crowd fol
lowed. The out In Missouri river rates was
the chief bear influence. It was thought
the cut tn rates inaugurated by ono road
will become general and that Chicago may
get very largo receipts of corn. May sold at
JJfcV find SS o , closing at USJ/c.
Jn oatH there was a moderate trade and a
weaker feeling In May , p.Ires declining 1'tfo
ami closing nt about the bottom , with .1 net
loss of Jc. Thcro was nioro disposition to
hell ami not so many buying , so tno maruot
was without buying support.
The \olumc of trading in pork was very
light. The mantel opened 5c ; easier , eased
oV ! to that ex teuton n little soiling , and then
advanced ytc on two or throe orders Hied.
As soon as thin was done prices declined to
yesterday's closing llgurcs. Later on the
weakness became pronounced , prices suffer
ing a further decline of lOc in the absence of
buyers and the weakness in corn , and then
reacted Be shortly heforo the cnrl of the ses
sion , but sold off again to the inside prices
of the day. At the close the maticot was , ' c
lower than at the same time yesterday. In
tlio lard market very llttlo was donn in the
deferred futures. May opened 2' c lower ,
then recovered slitrhtly , declined and closed
at i7.57 } . Hlbs were dull , closing lOo lower
in sympathy with pork.

NEW Yontf , Jan. 26. The stock market was
dull again today nnd speculation was un-

fraction hlgtier than the closing iigurcs of
yesterday. The firmness of this market was
partly duo to improvement in American se

foreign account. The room traders were
bullish during tlio early dealings , hut on an
occasional realizing sale the market
made a fractional reaction. Still the
trend of speculation was toward higher

It will uo of as much help to the business
