CmcAoo , Jan. 2. . It wan argued today
that with French duties on wheat increased
England will bo left os the only foreign Im
porter of wheat and Is not likely to pay as
much ns when stimulate ! by French compe
tition. Wheat felt this to the extent of
nboat ' c decline. Corn was strong on heavy
export clearances nnd reported Injury to the
Argentine crop. Provisions advanced slowly
on smaller receipts of hogn.
The wheat trade was kept in a stew most
of the session without important news.
Tgvvards midday the trade got the early
rumors of the Increase in the Trench duty
and that caused adrive of selling , which
made another now low record In the market.
During the morning it was the same drag
ging , discouraging , disappointing market of
previous days nnd weeks. The Price Cur
rent said : Everybody know tltat the coating
of snow was sufllcicnt to entirely protect
wheat from the hard weather. The price
was helped when dispatches and private
cables came saying the French duty was In
creased and that the French wcro reselling
their cargoes at Liverpool , Now York nnd
Hultlmoro. On this piece of news thcro was
a dip to the low point of the session nnd the
lowest of the year , but a slight recovery was
made by some good buying to cover shorts.
In corn the bullish feeling continues to
prevail and the market ngain scored a mod-
cr.ito advance. The advices received wcro
nearly all of n bullish nature , A fair busi
ness wns trnnsactcd , the price opening with
from Vc to ' f0 Kn'ni ' but ' 03t tue advance
under rcnU/.tng gales , but soon recovered
ami sold up > < fc. held steady and closed with

Thcro was a fair trade in oats and the
feeling hardly as strong as yesterday. Prices
fluctuated | yc and closed a shade lower. No
new features developed and prices wore con
trolled by corn largely.
A light volume of trading was reported In
pork , owing to an absence of any pressure to
eell. Tlio market opened at yesterday's
llnal llgurcs , improved 5c , reacted to the like
extent , advanced lOc. sold down ic , rose
TlrjO.closing about MC higher thanyesterdny. ;
The iurd market was almost stagnant for
May. At the close the market was from
lj ! o to 5c higher than the final figures of
yesterday. Uibs wcro dull , with an upward
tendency , fluctuations being within a range
of yo. May closed llrm at , $ O.T"i.

Tcitcrday a Onlet nnd Uneventful Day Iti
.Sliourllloi.
NEW YOUK , Jan. S3. This was a very quiet
and uneventful day. Only on live stocks did
the transactions exceed 5,000 shares , these
being St. Paul , which was the leader of the
market , Sugar , Burlington , Western Union
nnd Louisville < fc Nashville. St. Paul re
ceded M per cent at the opening ; and then
advanced j per cent , fluctuating between
these extremes until the publication ot the
not earnings for December was made , which
showed a heavier decrease than anticipated.
This precipitated a sharp selling movement ,
which brought heavy Dloeitsot the stock out.
A break of 1-tf per cent resulted , the last
beinc the lo > vcst price of the day. Sugar
closed nt yesterday's linal llgurcs and at no
time during the day touched n point more
than i } , per cent below that quotation. In
the early dealings it rose 1 per cent , but lost
the improvement in the late trading. The
preferred fluctuated within a limit of l' per
cent , closinc as yesterday at 82. Chicago ,
Burlington & Quincy lost % per cent at the
opening , rose % per cent and In the after
noon slump broke 1 > .f per cent , with n llnal
rally of } ( per cent. Western Union was
firmly hold until late in the afternoon , when
it became affected by the general depression ,
but only slightly , the last sale being only } j
per cent under yesterday's close. Luuisvillo
& Nashville moved between - ! and 44) < f ,
closing % per cent above the lowest at
yesterday's quotations. The otho.r coal
stocks were entirely conservative in their
movements.
London sold St. Paul nnd Louisville &
Nashville , and the west was a seller ot
grangers on the announcement that the
Atchisou receivers had made a cut on corn
and wheat from Missouri river points. Tno
question in congress as to the now loan had
u depressing clTcct on the general market ,
which closed heavy at or about the lowest of
the day.
The Post says : The stock market was
firmly held until the closing hour * when it
appeared that some considerable feeling was
under way , and especially In granger stocks ;
lor ttfis the chief cause was the St. Paul's
statement of .tho December net oarnlnirs ,
which was unfavorable.

, Receipts so far this week compared with
last show a falling off of 2,500 cattle , 5,5'JO '
hogs and UOO sheep.
There was a fair average run of cattle ,
and the general character of the receipts
showed little if any improvement. Buyers
for local killers again had a clear field , and
were slow in taking hold. Prices In the
main wore steady , in some cases linn. Fair
to good beef steers weighing from 1,000 to
l,85u Ibs. sold at from S8.50 up to $4 ,
while poor to fair stuff went at from ? 2 85
to $3.40. It was not a particularly brislc
market , but the movement wns continuous ,
and u fair clearance was soon effected.
' and canners' stock
Butchers' was gen

liberal 'and the demand not at nil pressing.
1'i'iccs averaged lower all around. Common
nnd canning cows changed hands at from
$1.50 to $2.25. and good to choice fat cows
and heifers at. from $2.75 up to Si.53. Calves
were In good demand and firm at from $2 to
$5.50 and the market for rough stock wns
about steady , poor to choice bulls , oxen nnd
stags going at from ? 2 to $1.25.
There was a fair amount of trading in
stockcrs and feeders , regular dealers doing
the most of the business. Prices ruled
steady to strong nnd the feeling was better
than for some time past. Good to choice
feeders are quoted at from $ ! ! to W.70 , fail-

quality wits good , not noticeably different
from the recent average. The market was
lower , a big fie lower than Tlinrsday , and
rather dull at that. Local Houses did about
all the buying , although a small shipping
order took about 500 head. For fair to good
hogs of all weights the popular

IN THE DISTRICr COURT.
II KUn' lnnmio CIIBO ScttlnnVltliotit n
Trial Tim \Vllirolkln Dlvnrcn.
One ot the old-tlino lawsuits , nnd ono
which has been foueht up and doivn all
of the lines since IS'.ll , has been settled out
of court , nnd is now at an end.
Some four years ago James Hopin was a
passenger on the Sherman avcnuo car line
coming down town. Like some other men
he preferred to stand on the platform instead -
-stead of taking a seat Inside of the car.
At the particular time when the law suit
herein referred to was born John was riding
on the rear cud of the motor car , nnd in
turning the curve on Clark street lie lost his
balance nnd fell to the pavement , the wheels
of the trailer passing over und cutting off
one of his lees. The man was taken to the
hospital , where the car company diil every
thing possible to relieve his sufferings , and
in n few months he was out , walking upon
one leg and a pair of crutches.
Shortly after the appearance of Ilogan
unon the scene of action , ho commenced suit
against the Omaha Street Hallway company ,
alleging that owing to the carelessness of
the men in charce of the train lie had fallen
off the car , lost a leg and suffered damages
in the sum of $20,000 and costs. To this the
defi.'iuliint answered , showing that the acci
dent was duo to tlio negligence of the
plaintiff who was riding on the platform
when there were plenty of good and desira
ble scats on the inside of the car.
On these issues the case went to trial at
the May term of court , 1SSI2 , and after the
introduction of the evidence and tlio argu
ments of the attorneys was submitted to
twelve jurors , who were locked up that they
mightdcllbcrato. How far they got with
their deliberations will never bo known , for
a couple of the men introduced cards into
the jury rooni and after n few games
had boon played some of the men commenced
to abuse the attorneys who were looking
after the flogan interests. This wns called
to the attention of the court and two of the
jurors , I. W. Hall and Thomus Kcduy , were
Jerked up and discharged in disgrace. This
little incident disposed of the case lor the
term , ns neither of the contending parties
would accept a verdict after the jury room
incident.
At ttio January term. 1893. the case was
again slated for trial and fought fora couple
of weeks before Judge llopowoll , but nt the
end of the time the jury refused to agree ,
nnd the troubles went over until lust Sep
tember , wbon they wcro again paraded be
fore the public. At that term of court there
was another bitter light and again n jury
failed to agree. Once more the case was
docketed for trial at the next term of court ,
but it will never bo tried , as yesterday the
attorneys for both parties signed a stipula
tion for n dismissal.
The somewhat celebrated Wilgolklo di
vorce suit was given another turning over
in tlio district court yesterday , with the de
fendant , the wife , at the bat.
Some months ago Arman P. Wilgolkio
commenced a suit to secure a divorce from
his wife , Nancy , alleging desertion , n bad
temper and sundry other thlnes to show
that the voyage on the sea of matrimony
IMC ! not been one of smooth sailing.
There the matter rested until yesterday ,
when the wife got her inning by filing her
answer. In this document see gives the lie
to the petition , and avers that it was Arman
who was the thorn in the side of the wed
ding alliancn. She avers that , she has no
objection to the gruntintr of the bill of di
vorce , but .before she will submit to the pro
ceedings she will have a slice of alimony to
assist In conducting her end of the suit. In
addition to this she alleges that Mr. Wll-
golkiu will have to put up something tan
gible toward the future support of herself
nnd the jlilldron , the legitimate fruits of the
union.
In making her showing , the wife points tote
to the fact that for ten long years she has
been the support of the family , some of the
tlmo living on and cultivating n homestead
and tree cl ilin , up in the wilds of Pierce
county. During much of this tlmo .she
charges that Annan was roving about the
country , hardly over producing "anything in
the way-of cash to run the common honsc-
liold. Hcsldcs all of this she avers that
since the consummation of the marriage she
hns paid more tlmn $1.000 lo liquidate the
debts \\hldi the hnsbnml has contracted
