CIIICAOO , Jan. 13. Wheat was stronger
loday and closed with a ? o gain for May.
Reports of the probable government bond
Issue , fnlr clearances , good buylnir and the
ixpectation of n cold wave contributed to
the firmness. Corn closed with May MC
higher. May oats are tfe higher and provisions -
visions slightly higher throughout the list.
Wheat opened with May , ' c up at Ol,5 c
Mid soon advanced to OlJic. The main
cause of the strength was the report that
ttio government would lasuo $ .10.000,000 in
bonds , Cables were steadier. The short
Interest bought tairly , there was some buy
ing on eastern account and the market
ihowcd tnoro steadiness , with nn apparently
itronger undertone. A report tha.t the
of the principal
: rep estimates of several
itates were lower than expected caused a
temporary reaction , which sent May down
toni.c ! , but the general news of the day
was apparently of too bullish a nature to
Ion ? discourage buyers. An advancing cold
ivave added to the llrmncsi. The buying con
tinued free until the end of the session , clos
ing but V from the top. May advanced
' ( .c , lost ' , . { 0 , advanced Jfe nnd reacted ac to
ihc close , at ( Hc.
In corn there was a strong , steady market ,
with operations not on a very largo acalo ,
prices covering from jtfe to J c ranze. 'J he
strengthening features were the action of
wheat and the small arrivals , which In
duced considerable local buying , selling
being scattered and generally in small lots.
Olid-Inns continue on n moderate scale ,
while the demand appears to bo Improving.
Receipts were under the estimate. May
opened - < c higher at Sc , lost tfc , advanced
' . . 'c , lost 'ic ' , rained $40 ana reacted % c to
the close at a8 ! c , but ' { .a from the top
ligures of the day.
There was a liberal trade in oats , within
a Binall but higher range. With liberal sell
ing and also good buying by operators , who
recently sold tit low prices , the linlsh was at
nearlv the top. May opened ' .jo-higher at
! i.iJ4ilost j c and advanced ) i'c to the close
at liVI' c.
Provisions opened weak and lower on re-
relpts of Hvo hogs 7,000 in excess of the
estimate. There was some activity for a
short time , prices advancing lo over yester
day's closing prices , the market being sup
ported by two or three packing houses. The
btrength in wheat also , contributed to the
feeling. Further strength was subsequently
developed on continued buying by the
packers. Compared with last night May
pork is ] 4c higher , May lard Gc higher , and
May ribs fie up.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
13.-i cars ; corn , 00 cars ; oats , 105 cars ; hogs ,

MtNNnAPOLi ? , Jan. 18. The wheat market
opened a lllllo higher Oils morning than It
ohHcd yesterday evening. The reason for
the Ntrongt i was hardly known by any ono.
Homo talked about the cold wave as they had
lalked a few days ago about the damage to
winter wheat by too strong a growth. Cincin
nati Price Current reported an opinion that
the yield ( if wheat us estimated by the govern
ment was some 50,000,000 bu. too low. Hut as
that condition Irftd been discounted long ago
thocsllnmtu hud very little oireCt tinon the
market today , Very much of the buying was
by eastern parties. Considerable of It by Now
York men. The country west ( if hero did very
little. After till there was good trading nearly
all of the day , and MIIIIO 3,000,000 tin. wcru
bought ami sold. Receipts were 103 cars ;
shipments , 61 cars. The olferlngs on thu
board from these receipts wore too small to
meet the demands of millers here nnd
outside and prices for track wheat
were forced above the May price. In some
Instances Irack wheat sold io per bu. nbovo
May. It was thought that at this premium
there would bo a great deal of wheat olTered
from country elevator stocks. Some was
offered , but buyers would not pay full spot
prices for It that iho sellers demanded , and
trade In grain of that kind WIIH light. Thcolo-
vator men say they are mtto that when May
comes there will ho a premium of lUlOl'-c ' :
above present prices , as it will cost that
amount lo get wheat out of local elevators and
put It on track ready for delivery to millers ,
They have no use for the money that would
como from sales of the stocks they now have
In store. So that thu only costs to them of
carrying thu wheat now on hand Is Iho Insur
ance and the small shrinkage the grain would
bu. subjected la. In addition , when Maycome * ,
thu men to whom the 'wheat Is sold would
hardly remove It , and It follows that the ele
vator owners expect storage charges to accrue
during May , June and a part nt least of July.
It Is for thwe charges that thu wheat will hu
held unless tljo premium Is higher than now
paid. The mills are running ut about the
.same rate as yesterday.
There Is istik that the mills will run more
lively next week , hut thu result will depend
largely upon whether freight rates are ro-
duccd or the demand for Hour keeps up. Thu
prices for flour remain steady , llran and
shorts were llrm and active , May wheat
opened at 00-\00 ic ; after soiling at prices
ranging not very far from that , there was an
advance to Olc , with short buying lively.
After the demands were supplied , prices
yielded a fraction ami flnallv clusod : January ,

NEW YORK , Jan. 13. The proposed issue
of irovcrnmeiit bonds , the announcement of
which It was expected would do so much for
the stocit inarkot In the way of increasing
the volume of business , bringing : In now
buyers and establishing a higher range of
prices , did not accomplish what was looked
forward to with certainty. It is ti-uo that
at the opening of business today a strong
tone characterized the dealings and there
was ( { router activity than for the past few
days , but the buying was not of the character -
actor anticipated. The foreign houses pur
chased .some round lots of the arbitrage
specialties , and there was a good deal of
covering by shorts , who concluded it was not
safe to ho on the beat- side of the market at
this juncture , and the co.nbinod buying for
thcso two accounts , supplemented by purchases -
chases of the small traders , served to advance
prices Jtt to ? j per cent at the opanlng.
When U Oucamo evident that the largo op
erators were not in the inarkot as buyers
and that there was heavy offerings of the
leading shares , a suspicion rcw that those
who had boon buyers on the rise , manipu
lated by advance reports of the band Issue ,
were endeavoring to roallzo their prollts.
As a consequence Iho upward movement

The Post savs : The early London buying
kept the general market firm until the last
half hour , when the dullness was Inter
rupted by a professional effort to mark down
prices generally. Tills movement began
with Ocncral Klcctrlc , though It was per
haps significant that tlio very speculators
who sold down General Klcctrio were busy
buying back Hock Island. This is not the
first time that the unlucky Boston stock
Ilrst mentioned has been used to sustain by
Its forced weakness n bear retreat. No
doubt many people experienced great disap
pointment In today's stock market. The
formal notion of n bond Issue was received
in apathy. Some visible and permanent in
