CHICAGO , Jan. 17. Hcnvlness was the
feature In today's wheat market ami May
closed 3'c lower after n weak opening. Corn
closed itfo higher , oats , ' c higher and pro
visions lower all around.
Wheat opened weak , with May Jjfc lower
nt ( U'Ve ' , and a further loss of , ' c was soon
Bt'orcd. The weakness was caused by un
favorable inarKet advices from abroad and a
general lack of support. Northwestern re
ceipts were laruor titan last year and respon
sible to soinu extent for tlio decline. Sotno
of the larger traders were bearing the mar
ket and their free offerings were against
tirlces. At the decline , however , there was
fiomo tirotty good buying. Prices held
fairly steady until Uradstrcct's report of
stocks was received , which again had a
bearish effect and helped to carry prices
back to almost bottom figures. Hradstreet's
reported an increase of 1,0-15,000 bu. cast of
the Uocky mountains and a decrease of
284,000 bu. west , leaving a net increase of
701,000 bu. The export clearances were fair
unit aggregated f > MK)0 ( ) nu. The clearances ,
with n'littlo bitylngat the end or the session ,
caused a slight reaction and May closed
steady.c \ above the day's bottom figure.
May declined j c after opening , advancml
from ' 50 to % c , eased off from ? gO to c ,
and closed at OijC. ;
There was not much doing in corn. A
steady tone was displayed , but tlio range as
n whole did not vary materially from that of
yesterday. Present receipts are a little
inoro. today's arrivals being cars. May
opened V lower at 'It c , declined > < e , ad-
vancnd fa anu" reacted , ' ( , ' to the close at
'l here was a fair trade In May oats , but
tlio other months were quiet. Tlio feeling
nt the opening was unsettled , owing to tlio
break in wheat , nnd first sales were at J4c
range nnd at from e to } .jO below yester
day's closing. A better feeling developed
Inter , prices advanced % c and closed steady
at about the top of ttie day at 2'o ,
Provisions opened weak nnd slightly lo-vcr
on the run of llvo hogs at the yards being in
excess of thu estimates , with reported liberal
receipts throughout the west. Packers
were the principal sellers. On some cover
ing by .1 few shorts prices firmed up a
limited extent , to break away again on in
creased offerings. Subsequently the irarkct
became heavy in response to the correspond
ing action of wheat. The buying of pork
later on by n prominent broker caused a
temporary reaction , but the tone of the
market was wc.ik. as It eased oft" again to a
limited extent and closed near the inside
prices of the day.
Compared with last night May pork is
CT'.jC ' lower. May lard Ifie lower and May
ribs Ifio lower.

There was no improvement north mention

in the present condition of tlio market it
was moro than ample and enough to relieve
