CHICAGO , Jan. 15. On a report that th
iccrotary ot the treasury had concluded tIssue
Issue70,000,000 m bonds wheat advanced 1
today. It had previously suffered a ma rite
decline , however , on big Indian shipment !
lower cables , liberal receipts and the u
rrrnscd visible supply , nnit closing price
\vuro unchanged from Saturday's close. Ma ,
corn Is ' { a lower , Mny oats ? ( jc lower am
provisions slightly higher nil around.
Wheat started out wcait , with May X
lower nt C."o , nnd continued downward
reaching OIJ c. Tim dcullnu was caused b ;
lower cables , liberal shipments from Indli
nud only n srnnll decrease In the quantity o
whcnt nnd flour on ocean passajjo. lleslde ;
the visible supply report postings Indicate !
that there would bo an Increase , while opera
tors had calculated upon n decrease , nm
liberal receipts wcro reported from th <
northwest. lint a good demand developed
ihorts became anxious to cover nnd n rank
ndvmn'0 followed. Ucsldes the report nhoui
a boml Issun there was also n report that ttu
crop of tbo Arccntino had almost been rulnei
with drouth. The huylnp as prices ndvauccc
was liberal and May closed but 'jc ' from tin
top figures of the day.
Corn received u good deal of attcntlor
early , but latur the market was In a wcali
condition and the dosing was very wcalc ,
Operations wcro almost exclusively local
one of tlio principal features being tlio un
loading of a largo long lot held by Captain
Phillips , estimated at 1.000.000 bu. This
nnd the free movement , the laivo increase
in the visible supply and general decline In
nil tlio surrounding pita , created a great
soiling pressure. 'Iho cash market was dull
nnd heavy. The report of an Argon tint
drouth caused a reaction , and May closed
midway between the top and bottom figures
of the day.
In oats the free selling by loncs early ,
combined with the decllno In other grains ,
caused weakness , but better buying and the
advance in wheat produced n reaction later ,
nnd the close was steady , with May midway
between the top and bottom figures of the
icaslon.
Provisions opened wcalc nnd lower on' ar
rival of live hogs largely in excess of the
estimates , but on li ht offerings there was
an improvement , which was also contributed
to by the support accorded to the market by
Armour & Co. The feature of tlio day was
the purchase of 1,000,000 Ibs. of May ribs by
n prominent commission house and this Im
parted renewed strength , with the closing
near tlio outside prices of the day. Com
pared with last night May pork is IBJ c
higher , May lard Do higher and May ribs Oc
higher.

NEW YOHK , Jan. 15. The week opened on
, ho Stock exchange with a llrm tone in
( peculation in harmony with the strength of
\moricau securities in London and in ro-
iponso to purchases for the homo nnd foreign
iccounts. After theN > poning improvement
, ha market sagged off somewhat by reason
if the dullness into which the trading lapsed
ather than from any great pressure to sell ,
ind except in some of the specialties there
vas very little movement in the list until
ho afternoon. A movement to cover short
: ontracts was developed shortly after noon ,
vhich crow in strength ns the day advanced
ind which was supplemented In the late
leallngs by purcnnscs for the long account.
A factor in the situation was the very
; cncral belief that the conditions or tno
Jnitod States treasury demands immediate

breed to issue bonds under the existing law.
I'ho secretary's letter to Chairman Voorheo1 }
if the senate ilnanco committee , mailo pub-
iu during tlio afternoon , confirmed this
/low , nnd as n government bond issue is
ooked upon us a bull point the upward
novomont received now Impetus. Among
, ho local influences at work was the an-
jouncemont that the Now York bond-
loldors' committed of the ( loading company

, vhioh was accepted as Insuring its tlnul
uloptlon , and that ut a not far distant date ,
.loading stock and bonds were materially
itrcnglhencd by this report and recorded
mbstantiul advances. Speculation in the
grangers was rendered llrm by reported
icavy freight shipments eastward , coupled
, vith advices from the cast of u cradual re.
rival in trade.
Burlington & Qulncy and St. Paul were
.loth attacked in the dealings , but gave way
mly fractionally nnd were qiuoug the moat
juoyapt in the late trading. General ISlec-
irlo , which was a trillo heavy during tno
nornlng. was bought in vigorously during

speculative ! situation caused buying during
; he latter part of the day , mid prices moved
ap sharply , making the closo.strong and at
} r near the best figures of the day.
The Post says ; Further pressure of a
limited kind wns applied today to the re-
rent speculators for the decline and tfley
ivero forced to cover. The movement took
its nctlvo shape in St. Paul , Western Union ,

LouUvillo. London prices wuro almost
without exception higher , which brought
irbltrago brokers to the support of today's
recoveries. The afternoon market shovrud

Vignaux were playing for the championship
of the world , and public Interest iu ]
the result was at fever heat. The event ,
took place in Chicago , nnd when Schiifor'a
marvelous cue punched the balls with tell
ing effect nnd won for him the title of world-
beater , the little billiimlist was carried
around on the shoulders of his enthusiastic )
friends and rushed down stairs , where a carriage -
riago was stanulupr near the curb. Tha
horses were rapidly unhitched , u long rope
was tied to the tongue of the vehicle , and
the crowd , headed by Duly , Sexton ami
other expert bllliardists , hauled tha vic
torious Sclmeffcr through the streets of
Chicago in triumph. That night about
fifty admirers .of the champion purchased
tall white plug hats , daubed them with a
circle of rod paint and proceeded to put a
tiut of deeper vermlllion on the town.1

"Wo have just received n 'letter from
Count Luhionskl , " said Commissioner Utt at
the Commercial club yesterday. "Tho count
has deferred his return to Omaha until Janu
ary 25. Ho writes that hodcsires to deal with ,
subscribers of stock in tha bset' sugar fac
tory committee this tune instead of
a chairman of n temporary committee. The
count says that ho hus mot with encourage
ment iu breanlzlns capital for the venture
and will settle the question of location of
the factory upon his arrival. Ho urges
prompt action all around nnd expects lo llml
that the committee has made .satisfactoryi
progress in arousing puulic interest and sub
scription of stock in the enterprise. Ha
will bo accompanied by two surveyors
nnd will make n plat of the cent
templated site before sailing foi5
Europe. From the tone of his letter I
infer that the count is enthusiast it- ever the
venture and expects to llml local sentiment
the samo. If not , I Imagine that ho will1
harvest a largo crop of disgust , but happily ,
the committee has mot and n big mass meet *
ing will bo held at the Hoard of Trade tomorrow -
morrow to secure contracts for acreage and ,
give a substantial expression of popular In
terest Iu the schomo. The mass meeting
will bu held nt 2 p. m. It la
open to all and upon it largely de
pends the future of the boot sugap
factory. It therefore behooves every advocate -
